I will be traumatized if that turns out to be the outcome of the game. I know that Florida State should be favored, but hopefully it is closer than that.

that was my exact reaction.. damn

Yeah me too, but maybe that means we should all clean up on this game?

In my lifetime, I've never seen a line like this vs. Notre Dame. Using covers.com I was able to research back to 1985 and the worst were in 2007 when we were +21 vs. UCLA and +21.5 vs. Purdue. We covered both easily and won UCLA straight up.

Do any old time gamblers remember a line like this back in the early 60s?

Might be an all time record biggest Notre Dame underdog game. Hard to believe.

Of course this line could move dramatically by October 18th.

This will be the best team ND has faced since Bama. Considering it's on the road and that our D will probably not be as good, I understand this line.

24 seems high. Although it will be our first true road game of the year, so maybe their getting an extra 1-2 points for home-field there.

The only other games we could be underdogs in are vs. Stanford, at ASU, and at USC, and those wouldn't be more than 3-4 points.

There is one simple rule to follow when betting on ND. As long as you follow these 2 rules consistently you will make a lot of money.

1. ALWAYS bet ND as an underdog and

2. NEVER bet ND as the favorite.

Do we know if they're supposed to be better/worse this year? They lost a 1st, two 2nd, 3rd, two 4ths, and 5th round pick to the draft, but I'm not exactly an expert on their roster.

I really don't expect too much of a drop off, if any from last yr, because of the recruiting classes FSU has had the last couple yrs. They lose Benjamin and Freeman on offense but there Oline is all seniors and there backs are solid. On D they lost Jennigan on the line, Joyner at safety, and Jones and Smith at LB which all were solid, if not studs, but they seem to be deep and ready to reload.

ND will have to play flawless and fast to beat them or even make a game of it. I just fear with a new BVG D installed ND might get burned. The offense will have to be aggressive and hopefully Golson plays lights out.

JW will be able to make Denard look like a joke against us, I assume. I am not shocked by 24 and don't think it will drop much. He is athletic enough to burn us in all aspects of the game. He may not be as fast as Denard but he can throw better than him. The times Denard should have chucked it to a WR, JW will. When it needs to be tucked, he will. I think we are fucked!

The good news is we have no idea what to expect from this defense I honestly think the players are there to get the job done. We just have to play a perfect Defensive game.

Sorry to be negative but I am 100% with 11-1...

And I think it is ok to admit to this being a butt kick right now.

There is some truth to that. Let's look at ten years of data.

ATS ND as FAV 33-45 42%
ATS ND as UND 24-21 53%

2013 ND as FAV 2-5-1
2013 ND as UND 3-2

2012 ND as FAV 5-5
2012 ND as UND 2-1

2011 ND as FAV 5-6
2011 ND as UND 0-2

2010 ND as FAV 2-4-2
2010 ND as UND 4-1

2009 ND as FAV 1-8
2009 ND as UND 3-0

2008 ND as FAV 5-3
2008 ND as UND 2-3

2007 ND as FAV 1-1
2007 ND as UND 4-6

2006 ND as FAV 5-6
2006 ND as UND 0-2

2005 ND as FAV 3-4
2005 ND as UND 4-1

2004 ND as FAV 4-3
2004 ND as UND 2-3

As a side note. Personally, I'm just pleased we've gone without losing STRAIGHT UP when favored by 9.5 or more in the last 17 tries. Previous to that we had a stretch where we lost 5 games as a near double digit favorite... while winning only 8 (we lost to USC in 2011 -9.5, USF in 2011 -10.5, Tulsa in 2010 -9.5, Navy in 2009 -12, and Syracuse in 2008 -19.5)

Dnt underestimate our offence, i think we could score on any1. Also the last few yrs our defence was a bend but dnt break so a more athletic offence would rip us apart. I think the huge question mark will be can our defence make plays against athletic offences. Then my friends it boils dwn to turnovers & i like a more experience Golson all day. I BELIEVE!!!

Yeah so in other words if you bet against ND when they are favored you win 58% of the time. Another 53% when ND is the underdog. Hard to find better odds anywhere. $$$.

So, X and O's wise, what's the best shot for the Irish to beat FSU? Do they try to do what Auburn did against the 'Noles in the first half of the BCS game? I don't really remember what that was; I was on vacation and drinking heavily. But do the Irish play ground and pound offense, trying to wear the FSU D down and keep J. Winston & company off the field? Or do we try to shoot it out and hope our D catches them off guard? I'm interested to hear what our chalkboard guys think.

On offense, I think you ground and pound -- 3 plays to get a first down all day long -- beat on the defense with our big boys up front. Hold onto the ball and keep Winston off the field. Make them so worried about stopping the run that they let their guard down and go over the top on them. Take advantage of the opportunities we get, but mostly methodically ram the ball down their throats as much as possible.

On defense, throw the kitchen sink at Winston to keep him out of sorts. Put him on the ground and make him think about where the next hit is coming. From what I've heard about Van Gorder's defense, this strategy plays well as far as bringing heat from all over the field. Let our DB's put their skills on display. Take a few chances to get turnovers and hope the ball rolls our way. Winston will make some plays, but if we let him get into a groove, it might be all over early. Make him think ... I'm assuming from hearing him talk that that thinking is not his strong suit. Focus on sealing the edge. Finally, get in his head. Call him a crableg stealing rapist as often as possible.
