I see where you're coming from but nearly half of the top 50 NFL draft picks this year were evaluated as 3* or less in high school.

Of course we get giddy when we see blue chippers signing on at ND but Kelly develops talent and is only now getting into a groove recruiting the athletes he can mold into ballers.

Let me put it this way. Bennett Jackson is not the Giants 6th round pick if Charlie Weis is still his head coach.

Hill, Blankenship, Bonner, Mokwuah.. Kelly sees 5*'s.

For the record, I wasn't talking stars until Ironman brought it up.

My lack of excitement had to do with their film and offers.

But my original point was a positive one, that they're good takes because these are the type that likely stick around for 5 years.

Idk if it's just me, but Brandon's upside and tools blow Mike Golic's out of the water - and that is no shot at Mike. He was great for us. But Brandon is a different caliber of prospect IMO. I don't get that comparison at all.

He may have more upside and tools than Mike but he may also not see the field for a few years. Mike was a starter for us late in his career. I personally don't think this kid will come in and play for a few years. Hopefully I am wrong but in the end, he is a guy good enough to compete every day every year. Regardless of his upside being better, he has better players/recruits ahead of him, IMO. No knock on either, but more of a positive.

As for straight comparison as a player, I was referring to Mike as more of a general statement, the "Mike Golic Type" kind of guy. Not a MIke vs Brandon sort of thing. Just to make that clear.

If this guy winds up having a career comparable to, say, Kona Schwenke, he'll prove to be worth the pickup. Especially if he can keep the fifth year in his pocket.

I see very very little chance he sees the field as a freshman. Both Day and Jones come back so the starters are in place and we brought in 3 last year that will be ahead of him developmentally

Are you guys expecting Elijah Taylor to commit tomorrow or something? I know OSU seems to be out of it for him but his name has been said a lot the past 24 hours for not being a commit yet

With IIs report along with Loy's report and Wiltfong's CB change in mind, it would seem Taylor committed yesterday and it is only a matter of time before it's public

This info has been shared a number of times in multiple threads. Someone has committed. We are 99% it's him. He wanted time to call coaches to thank them for recruiting him before it becomes public. There should be an announcement tomorrow. Who knows, maybe it's his last day of school or something and he has a fun way of announcing it.

Sorry if I sound annoyed but you are honestly like the tenth person to ask this and receive and explanation

Well that's good to hear. I like the Tiassum commitment and would like the Taylor commitment as well.

The good thing about DT recruiting this year is that we don't need guys that have to play right away. It's perfectly fine for them to get coached up and train with Longo for 2 years. With the 7 or so DT's we have on the depth chart right now, I'm perfectly with Tiassum and Taylor not seeing the field until 2016 or 2017.

Unless we get a few stars in the next class or two, I don't see it. Notre Dame is definitely going to be platooning their linemen more often in this new defense, similar to what Auburn did last year. I can expect around 6-8 DT's to see the field in one game. Let's say he redshirts his first year: Then we have Jones (GS), Rochell (Sr), Matuska (Sr), Hayes (Jr), Cage (Jr) and Mokwuah (Jr). But, hopefully we're in a position that are line is so good that we have this issue.

seems like a solid player for the staff to work with and provide depth.

add Taylor early this week and we can relax at the DT position and go all in for the Canadian dude.

I have been following ND football pretty close since 2006 and doesn't it seem that the Indiana guys Generally pan out pretty well? I say yes. I am not from Indiana but they have played a pretty big part in a lot of recent teams. See Cave, Goodman, both Martins, Eifert, Jaylon, Sheldon Day, hopefully J Brent, tranquill etc These are the types that MSU turns in to gold.

Alright alright, I feel kinda dirty bringing actual info while every thread is up in flames but the fun is over.

He wasn't expecting to commit today but, "there’s just no other place I’d rather be than Notre Dame."

Whiskey, try not to get too excited by this part, but seriously get fucking hyped. The staff knew of the other schools that he was looking at. When he and his mom got there and met with the staff laid out the facts. "My mom and my grandfather and I were looking at all the details, graduation rates, success in academics and on the field stuff."

Again, for those who want to give Kelly shit for not getting to know recruits, Tiassum said that this trip was about getting to know Kelly. He and Elston had a good relationship and he and Kelly really clicked today. Kelly led the tours today. See, when Kelly hears that they have a shot at a kid they want, he comes in and gets it done.

It's been mentioned that he is going to recruit Bilal but he has also gotten to know Cornell well and will help to recruit him where he can.

Yes, because we get to evaluate them up close, they're often undervalued since Indiana isn't a hotbed, and the retention rate for local kids is through the roof relative to California, the south, etc.

With the exception of Gunner Kiel our batting average is fantastic.

I don't view Taylor as a low level DT. He's a very quality 1 tech prospect. He is extremely strong for being 17. When Tenn, MSU, OSU, and ND are heavily recruiting you I wouldn't call it low level. Tiassum I can understand but again we need to bring in some guys to provide depth with potential for more upside. I'm very happy with this start at DT.

Yep. Here are a few mid level three star DLs from Bama in recent years.

Stinson
Ivory
Dareus
Cody

Maybe a few more I can't think of off the top of my head. Yes, you will miss on some of the players in this rating range, but a lot of that depends on the player and their work ethic, development, coaching ability, etc. I think this is a solid pickup for the Irish and if the kid develops, he will be a solid contributor. Gotta think that in a BVG defense, the most he would be asked for would be 8-10 solid plays a game. Gotta have that depth to do that. Congrats Irish Nation.

Park Tudor is in one of the small classes so his competition isn't the greatest. However, Park Tudor is one of the top private schools in academics, so there shouldn't be a concern about his eligibility.

Tape of a five star player, his competition looks bad though.

His tape may look more impressive but if you look closely, the majority of the time he is blowing through kids who are maaaaybe 5'11" 250. He has a tendency to stand very upright off the ball, but that is coachable. I would love to hear how he competes at II.

See above.

I think he turns out to be very good in the end. Welcome young man.

SIAP:

Defensive Tackle Brandon Tiassum (IN) Verbally Commits to Notre Dame! - One Foot Down

Impact:

Immediate Future:

Tiassum, like nearly all linemen, will probably need a redshirt season in 2015 before working his way into the rotation in 2016 and beyond. He can take the season to work on adding and redistributing weight, while refining his technique against collegiate linemen in practice.

Long Term/Career:

Tiassum should develop into a true space-eater along the defensive line during his career in South Bend. Like so many high school athletes, he gets by at the prep level by being bigger and stronger that the opposition. His camp and game highlights show a tendency to play a bit high (likely a result of his size). Under the tutelage of DL Coach Mike Elston, he should develop into a regular contributor and potentially a starter as an upperclassman. He is probably flying a bit under the radar on the national level currently, and will likely move up the rankings after the summer camp circuit.

Oh man, great stuff.

I love this pickup at this stage of the cycle. This is where you snag your depth recruits so you can focus on the stars late in the cycle. This was a position of need and we got a high-upside guy. Perfect.

Tell me again why we should be celebrating another verbal commitment?

The Barnett saga (if you can call it that) clearly shows that the verbal commitment means jack squat. The kid even had ND stuff plastered all over his room!

I'll still follow recruiting, but I'll be putting a grand total of 0 stock in verbal commitments from here forward.

That's my negative nancy post for the quarter.

So wait, are you not going to celebrate commitments but still get upset when guys decommit? That sounds like a lose-lose situation to me.

I'm curious as to what part ot Tiassum's film you weren't excited about? It is his film (along w Taylor's) you are talking about correct?
