While I don't believe it to be true, I still stand by the fact he will claim ignorance at some point. That he just didn't know what was going on.

Hopefully someone will point out to him that is his responsibility to know what was going on.

I'm growing tired of hearing the media downplay a lot of Manziel's actions citing he's just a teenager. His parents are pretty well off (gas & oil) and have spoon fed Johnny (Mercedes) all his life. Rather than parent him like they should, they have simply jumped on the celebrity train with their son.

A&M has the support system in place and if they are really concerned, they will reign him in pretty quickly. If the autograph for money rumors are true, I bet he gets suspended just long enough to come back for the Bama game.

I also find it ironic that ESPN hypes him up all last year, presents him with an ESPY (who paid for that trip?) and now is hammering him. They helped make that bed. It may sound childish, but I won't shed a tear if he flames out this year.

If I had a Heisman QB on my roster and he was innocent and in jeopardy, I would have a modern Johnny Cochran and the people who freed Scam Newton.

On a separate note, I have to think everyone on this staff hopes he declares for the draft this fall.

I'm sure Showers (the QB who ran to UTEP) feels like Gunner did when Everett was booted.

“@schadjoe: An East Coast broker played ESPN two videos of Johnny Manziel signing Texas A&M football and helmets and said he paid Manziel about $7,500”

This is now three different guys saying they payed Johnny, right?

I actually wish this had all happened after the season... I was looking forward to watching him struggle on the field first... lol

I think this is just the second. The South FL guy (original ESPN report) and now this Connecticut signing. Am I missing one?

As for JFM, he's f*****.

At what point does A&M move to suspend JF? The NCAA has probably already given them the recommendation, but it is still up to the school to sit him.

Through it all, it will be sad if JF accepted money and won't be on the field. It will take some of the intrigue out of playing the Aggies now.

When it becomes clear the NCAA has sufficient evidence to act. As of right now, at least one of the autograph guys wouldn't take their calls. If Manziel stonewalls them can they suspend on the basis of a couple of ESPN reports? I'm sure they can suspend Manziel if he won't cooperate but what if he sits down with the NCAA and just denies it all or (slightly more believable) tries to say Uncle Nate got the cash.

Heck, maybe Uncle Nate claiming all the money is part of the handshake deal for his everpresent sycophancy.

Haven't followed all the reports but if there are two brokers coming out stating that they paid JF and have proof of that then it would seem that it is only a matter of time. How hard is it for the NCAA compliance office to send an investigator to the brokers, dipose them, and then send the rec down to the school? I know Emmert and co are pretty inadequate at proper investigations but this one appears wrapped up with a nice bow on top. We will see I guess.

The NCAA's permanent weakness is that they lack the power to force third parties into cooperation (this was at the heart of their Miami investigation scandal). For exhibit A, once Cam Newton finished his college season he was beyond their clutches and the investigation into those payments was stillborn.

On the other hand, I don't know what burden of proof they require before acting. It's possible that statements made from the brokers to ESPN are sufficient (which basically means there is no standard) but I doubt it.

They require VERY little burden of proof. They will certainly use statements made to ESPN to build their case.

I have little confidence in the NCAA regarding anything they look in to. They have proven to be so inconsistant with their rulings the last five years or so.

The broker just wants to get paid. Whether it's TMZ or ESPN or the NCAA, he'll sell the video and it'll be the end of Johnny Football's Texas A&M career.

I'm torn on this...

On one hand, I hate TAMU, hate JF, and think he is a spoiled little brat that clearly broke the rules.

On the other hand, the NCAA is effing ridiculous. They make millions and millions of dollars off Johnny Football and are going to try to punish him because he wants a few thousand bucks for autographs. Talk about exploiting your student athletes.

So I'm going to root for JF to take down the NCAA on this one.

What do you suggest the NCAA does then? Allow players to profit off their fame at this point? I know that sounds like the most logical thing in the world at first glance, trust me I really do, but it would lead to huge, huge, HUGE issues that would kill college football.

The problem is that people will abuse the system. "Oh hey five star recruit! I can't give you money to go to my school, but I can maybe pay you some money for an autograph? I sure wouldn't want to miss the next big thing at State U and since you'll be such a star for us... I think $5000 sounds about right. And if you promise to give me your cleats after your first game, I think I'd trade my Cadillac with you... Since you're going to be such a BIG star for my school... Right?"

Essentially it would make it impossible to police payments (because you'd have to question the "fairness of costs" of every single transaction, which would be a god damned nightmare). Thus creating a HUGE power shift where the team with the most wealthy and invested boosters would be able to buy recruits legally, or at the very least it would be ABSOLUTELY impossible for the NCAA to police. This would kill college athletics except for at places like Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, etc. where money is a non-issue.

Jay Bilas for the win (he does it for several other players):

Right, greyhammer and right, Grahambo. I hate the NCAA but what Johnny Manziel did makes him the antithesis of an amateur athlete. The NCAA can't condone that.

But at the same time ... he isn't an amateur athlete! No big time college football player is, really. The system drives me nuts because it is inherently contradictory.

If we're talking about the same guy, I think that's Ok. St.

That cowboy hat would make more sense... BUT I swear that looks more like a blue interlcoking 'ND'...

the dude in middle, above the chick in the chair, right next to the big fat guy in all white.

The NCAA doesn't make squat. They are a non profit entity. It's not like a bunch of old white guys are sitting around board rooms, getting rich off of the athletic competition amongst (mostly) minority players. The monies generated by football programs allow pole vaulters, distance runners, fencers, water polo players, soccer players, and numerous other athletes, to attend college on a scholarship. Many of those other athletes would not have otherwise had the opportunity to go to school. Those millions fund new stadiums, weight rooms, and training tables, true. But they also fund new dormitories, repairs/upkeep/renovations of many non athletic-related buildings, and facilities that might be athletic in nature, but are able to be enjoyed by the whole student body. So people need to quit whining about how much money the NCAA "makes" off of athletics.
