I'm, sorry, but we don't play a murderers row.......if you consider Purdue, Pittsburgh, BYU, the Naval Academy, and Michigan State part of a murderers row let's get real, on top if that, Michigan wasn't really all that good last year. Southern Cal was playing with a backup, and I haven't even mentioned Wake yet......

We routinely play one of the toughest schedules in the nation, which is something to be proud of, but our relentless (and frequently front-loaded) schedule has also been an obstacle to post-season success for us.

Take a look at Sagarin's top-10 SoS for 2012. Not one of those teams finished with fewer than 2 losses, and most did far worse:
Missouri - 1st - 5-7
Auburn - 2nd - 3-9
Kansas - 3rd - 1-11
Florida - 4th - 11-2
Oklahoma - 5th - 10-3
Texas A & M - 6th - 11-2
Baylor - 7th - 8-5
Kentucky - 8th - 2-10
Arkansas - 9th - 4-8
Cal - 10th - 3-9

FEI's numbers are similar.

Point being, since we don't deliberately schedule cupcakes between challenging opponents, we can't afford to line-up too many elite programs. Doing so wears down the team, and the odds catch up with everyone eventually.

Whiskey, I know we don't deliberately schedule cupcakes.....we dropped ASU and am replacing them with FSU because of our ACC affiliation. I like the idea of playing FSU, its going to happen eventually, I don't understand why people get excited to see them try to water down the schedule to get to a NCG......it reminds me of the B1G......which, we play enough of them, but that's their mantra, not ours!!

I'd rather watch them play a good team and lose, than a cream pie and blow them out....just my personal preference.

It's literally everyone's mantra except for the couple unlucky schools in the SEC that get a bad draw. Doing otherwise is straight up silly. All you're doing is front loading a "big game" that would instead be back loaded in a BCS bowl game. We can't count on getting lucky with top teams tanking/injuries to pave the way for wins.

That is a stone cold lie or you're just crazy. There is not a single person who would rather watch a team LOSE than win a tune up game. I have a mind to try to dig up posts from 2011/2010 and see how "happy" you were with our losses to good teams.

By what you just said, you would rather we go 0-12 against the top 12 teams in the country than have us go undefeated playing some cream puffs.

So you would always schedule the top team available in the country for every game, in every situation, all year round, no exceptions?

College football is as much a game off the field as on it. Everything that everyone is doing is purposfully planned to try and get to the big games. Don't let the chest-puffing, macho men screaming SEC! SEC! SEC! make you forget it. Bama does it, Michigan does it, USC does it, Miami does it, OSU does it, Oregon does it, TAMU does it. You take 3-4 battles a year, beat the sh*t out of everyone else.

ASU not giving up on 2014 Notre Dame game:

“As far as ASU is concerned, Notre Dame is under contract to play at Sun Devil Stadium in 2014,” said Rocky Harris, ASU senior associate athletic director. “If Notre Dame chooses to unilaterally breach the agreement that they have signed over five years ago, it will negatively impact us competitively and financially. It is also unfair to our fans and student-athletes. Our expectation is that Notre Dame will honor the agreement they signed since the game is less than 18 months away.”

Sucks. Means we're not doing an early end with Michigan.

When is it set to end now??? I hate that game every year... even when our boys win I feel just relieved rather than happy...

Thanks for this...

The thing is, most of the schedule rankings don't factor in the week in week out stuff you mention (at least not that i know of)... I can't think of another team in the country that schedules the way ND does year in year out where you really don't have a true cup cake all year... I mean on the average year the worst team we play is who? A bad BCS team??? Navy? That's not a 'cupcake' game... compare that to the 'worst' game of most other big name programs...

Purdue, Navy, MSU,... these are NOT tune up games... just about every other school in the country plays either a sub division team (or two) or a absolute true D1 bottom feeder... we never do either. So yeah, we play a murder's row when you add it all up in total.

I am all for playing a Temple to start evey single season... and playing one or two more during it.

If ND wants out they will most likely have to pay ASU and maybe even cover the cost of ASU paying another school to come play. I say ND should keep its word.

I live in Phoenix, so I think they should too!

What's up with everybody wanting to drop Michigan?

It's a great rivalry game. Not sure why everyone here wants it to end so badly...

It doesn't offer us anything other than an okay rivalry. No recruiting inroads, no new places to play. Let's use our independence while we still have it and replace Michigan with teams from Cali, Florida, Texas, Georgia, etc.

I understand playing teams from those states but i dont think theres any way to deny that Michigan is a big rivalry.

I want to drop Michigan because of the history between ND and Michigan. They're not a team that deserves to be on our schedule when you understand their roots and some of the shenanigans they pulled over the years. I've, personally, wanted them dropped ever since that Tate Forcier game in the Charlie Weis era where the Big Ten refs handed them a W on a silver platter.

Furthermore, beating them has minimal upside compared to other marquee teams. There is no scenario where it is 'better' for ND, recruiting, and the national brand to play Michigan instead of a Texas, Oklahoma, Florida State, SEC team, etc. The only Big Ten schools we should play with regularity, IMO, are Purdue and (maybe) Northwestern.

I would be perfectly fine with abandoning the Big10 altogether. I like the way we play against Mich. State, but ND is poised to really enhance their national brand. Let's go to Florida or the Northeast or Pac10.

It's not a okay rivalry. It's a great one.

The Michigan rivalry is frequently exaggerated, mainly due to recent history and geographic proximity. We've played USC (84 times), Navy (86 times), Purdue (84 times), and Michigan State (75 times) far more often than Michigan (40 times).

If you consider a rivalry any game which arouses strong feelings in the respective fan bases, then I suppose Michigan is a "big" one. But all of our real rivalries (listed above) involve a long history of mutual respect; there's nothing but bad blood between ND and Michigan. If you're not familiar, I strongly suggest you educate yourself on why we hate the skunkbears.

I, for one, would gladly set fire to whatever "tradition" exists between ND and Michigan before I'd let them benefit one iota from our success. As others have pointed out, the game does nothing for us.

Michigan is a great rivalry but you guys act as if we have played them every year since the dawn of time.

What are the chances ND beats FSU? I personally would love to crush them.

In their house, assuming both teams continue the seeming up swing...

less than 50/50, but not horrible.
