Yeah, the dude's got 7 years left on his contract.

Alternatively, why would Pitt want Ferentz? He hasn't exactly covered himself in glory the past couple of years.

True seems a poor fit for both parties.

He is from Pittsburgh, and even coached there briefly.

Thanks, I did not know that. However, this still does not seem like enough to pull him away from the big contract and job security at Iowa though IMO. Also while Iowa is not exactly living in their glory days, it seems more attractive than a Pitt program tht would be on their 5th coach in as many years.

I wouldn't say he has that much job security... Going ino next year he will be at the top of everyone's 'coaches on the hot seat' list

Todd Graham to Wisconsin sounds good to me. He is burned out at ASU after staying for one full year I'm sure.

I agree with the majority of your post. This isn't earth shattering news. With that said, it IS disappointing given our most recent history as a program riddled with poor coaching. Most of our previous regimes had issues from the top down with head coach being the most easily scrutinized. Now that we are finally building on positive consistency, a wrench gets thrown in to cause a stir up.

I think many of us were wishful thinking that Bob D was looking to help advance ND to the point of real consistency at a championship level. We've come a long way (with huge credit to BD), but we haven't reached that ultimate peak quite yet. Who knows? It could still be a priority of his beyond the money and prestige of a HC gig. After all, he has the opportunity to do what many coaches wish they had: time and space to focus primarily on coaching those elite student athletes that walk through his door without the extra responsibilities impressed upon head coaches. With an increased salary, it's an even sweeter gig.

But it might just be about that next challenge for BD. He'll do what's best for him.

This is what Kelly said twice earlier this year. Of course, Kelly believed Tim Hinton or Urbie would come to him before they worked out a deal.

In what scenario do you see him coaching in the NCG AND taking another position for next year? It's one or the other.

Reading this thread hurtz my nutz. Diaco isn't leaving Teo and team prior to a NC game, if at all. Interview = experience + exposure + leverage + raise. If he goes dumpster diving at BC, he's not the man I thought he was, especially if he does it before the NC.

He stay, that is all.

... So I've checked with a few defensive commits. Asked one if it would make him reconsider. Response: "Excuse my language but hell no"

Couldn't disagree more. I would not be shocked if he took another job (hoping he gives it another year, though). I would be very shocked if, one way or another, he isn't coaching the defense against Alabama a month from Friday. Very shocked.

I don't see any reason why he couldn't accept a job with the understanding that he would report for duty on January 8th, and I don't see any reason that a program that wanted him would resist such an arrangement.

It is basically a month off the recruiting trail/not building a staff, etc. I can see why his new employer might want him to start right away, and I wouldn't say I blame them. But I also see how he might stick around. It'd be something to negotiate, that's all.

Him taking a job and not starting for a month would screw up his allotted time for recruiting and interviewing/hiring his staff. If he takes a HC job, I can't imagine he hangs around.

That said, I think he stays because he wants to hang around and win a title with this group that he quite clearly loves.

Exactly. And if they wanted him bad enough, it wouldn't be the hardest point to negotiate. His new staff wouldn't be entirely comprised of current ND assistants, so assuming he can get some key pieces in place they could do a lot of the legwork in setting up a board, visits, contact, etc., so Diaco could hit the ground running on Jan. 8.

I think if this were the Meineke bowl it would be a different story, but his new employer would have to understand the situation, and understand how they can benefit from it. When ND hired Charlie Weis, he stayed with the Patriots through January to coach the Super Bowl. He may not have been a smashing success here, but it wasn't for the lack of a good start (back-to-back BCS bowls) or a lack of recruiting (he consistently had pretty highly rated classes, partly by showing them the Super Bowl ring he won in 2004). On the filp side, Kelly left Cincy to come here right away. Nix committed while ND had no coach. The rest of the class has 2 or 3 guys that are major contributors to this team. A softish start to recruiting hasn't exactly doomed BK.

In other words, I understand the argument. I just don't view it as being very persuasive.

fuel for the fire :)

I can't help thinking a few NFL teams might like what Diaco is doing?

He's from New Jersey right? The Jets are due for an overhaul.

Haha I knew someone was going to freak about this. Bielema played at Iowa and Cooks coached at Wisconsin.
