At least Wisconsin I would understand.

Great program in a downish patch. Traditional powerhouse in a good but ultimately win-able conference.

Just don't though Mr. Bobby.

Just think of it this way: Chryst goes to Wisconsin, Diaco to Pitt. Butch Jones goes anywhere, Diaco to Cincinnati. Or Diaco to Wisconsin. I think he's going somewhere, unless he gets PAID.

What kids do you feel we're at risk of losing? I guess I just don't see this as quite as earth shattering as some others do. It feels like a surprising number of posters don't follow sports that closely. This is what happens when you win big. (Nobody knows anything about Diaco's plans, and I'm not assuming anything. But for the sake of this post I'll pretend that he is going.)

If Diaco had left last year, maybe we would have lost more recruits. The obvious irony is that the coordinators of 8-5 teams don't usually get HC jobs, and the flip side is that undefeated national champs don't have a ton of decommits. Last year's class ended up being pretty good, even though all the momentum was going away from us. Now, though, all of the momentum is going with us. I'm really not concerned about decommits, save for the two guys who we could end up recruiting over (which would technically be decommitments). And the beauty of the situation is that we're in a great spot to replace kids if we do lose them at the end, in some cases maybe even with better players.

I certainly don't WANT to lose Coach Diaco, but if he wants to be a head coach I want him to get that opportunity. If he goes, it will be a loss. But not a program-changing one. I believe it won't have much, if any, impact on recruiting. And I believe he would tell any prospective new boss that they will hire him with the condition that he will stay at ND through the NCG. I also believe in Kelly's track record of identifying and developing quality coaches.

So at the end of the day, this is the biggest story going on around ND football but it isn't huge story in the big picture, IMO. Par for the course of being an elite program.

My worry is strickly about the NC game. I have no doubt ND will make a great hire in the off season if Diaco bolts.

I agree with everything you just said, I just don't understand how you wouldn't get why we think this is 'earth-shattering.'

He has become our guy, led our defense back to greatness, been an incredible recruiter, and is now an icon.

I just like things the way they are and don't want our guy going anywhere. It would be a kick in the pants.

Not too long ago, an assistant coach might only get one or two chances to run his own program, so when that opportunity arose, he had to take it. Coach Elliot, for instance, missed his window, which is why he's been a career assistant.

That's not the case anymore. As the amount of money in CFB has increased, coaching tenures have decreased significantly. The carousel spins faster and faster each year. I strongly believe that Diaco could do much better for himself by waiting until the right job comes along. BC is sh!t HC gig.

Wisconsin is going to their 3rd straight Rose Bowl. Their record wasn't as good this year but I don't think we can say they are in a "downish patch."

They lost six assistants from last year and a bunch of key players.

Completely agree. I feel like Diaco is in no man's land (at least right now), where he is over qualified for most jobs and a tad underqualified for the best HC gigs.

Yeah I know.. I was thinking Nebraska and reading/typing Wisconsin.

I got flustered with all this talk, and I was listening to ESPN at the same time talk about Manti and BK... OVERLOAD!!!

How do we even know Al Golden still isn't in the mix? I can't find anything reporting he turned it down.

I agree with the majority of your post. This isn't earth shattering news. With that said, it IS disappointing given our most recent history as a program riddled with poor coaching. Most of our previous regimes had issues from the top down with head coach being the most easily scrutinized. Now that we are finally building on positive consistency, a wrench gets thrown in to cause a stir up.

I think many of us were wishful thinking that Bob D was looking to help advance ND to the point of real consistency at a championship level. We've come a long way (with huge credit to BD), but we haven't reached that ultimate peak quite yet. Who knows? It could still be a priority of his beyond the money and prestige of a HC gig. After all, he has the opportunity to do what many coaches wish they had: time and space to focus primarily on coaching those elite student athletes that walk through his door without the extra responsibilities impressed upon head coaches. With an increased salary, it's an even sweeter gig.

But it might just be about that next challenge for BD. He'll do what's best for him.

If Diaco gets offered the HC job at Cal or Wisconsin, he should absolutely take it, and I'd be very happy for him. Not so at Purdue or BC.

I would guess he's not their first call, put it that way. RT @MitchJR14: what do you think the possibility is for Diaco going to Wisconsin?

Let's say he accepts a job.

Who thinks he coaches through the NC game? I absolutely think he will.

While a pay raise might be the thing to do here, I don't think Coach Diaco's decision will come down to dollar signs. A new mountain, the wider road, a great fit, all of those seem higher priorities to a man like Coach Diaco. I don't even think the desire to be the Head Coach will pull him this year. I think Whiskey is right, Coach knows he is young and there will be opportunities in this day and age, if he leaves now it won't be because of money or because he was overly anxious to put his stamp on a program, it will be because it was the right fit and he felt compelled to go.

Lets hope Brian Kelly uses his recruiting ability we've seen him have with Te'o and keep Diaco aboard.
Or maybe, Swarbrick should make him head coach and let Kelly go.

I'm not as worried about losing Diaco for the long term as I am worried about him not coaching in the national championship game. Here we are, a month away from the biggest game Notre Dame has played in two decades against one of the best teams they've played in that same time span, and our defensive coordinator, one of the best in the country, is (worst case scenario) not going to be coaching or (best case scenario) at the very least distracted. I have faith in the other defensive coaches to pick up a good portion of the slack, but no matter how you slant this losing Diaco would be a giant blow, both long and short term.

This team has been ravaged with injures, disparaged by the media to the point of slander, lost prized recruits, had guys who couldn't hack it transfer, and were left for dead on several occasions the last 4 years.

We will be just fine with or without BD in the box in Miami. This team absolutely cannot be shocked or discouraged by ANYTHING at this point, and will continue to split rails until their shift is over.

All these guys know how to do at this point is show up & shut people up, and are saving their greatest "eff you" to a world of haters for Jan. 7.

TAKE THAT S-IT TO THE BANK!
