Spain in a must win game today--draw almost surely eliminates them.

Absolutely is. Problem is, Chile looked really impressive in their first game. It ain't gonna be easy for Spain, unless Netherlands was just a massive fluke and Spain is the real deal we all expected.

Agreed.

Also curious to see how Croatia-Cameroon fare in Manaus ahead of the US game there.

If he has to sit, we've got a decent shot at locking up our group play before the Germany game.

Netherlands providing the goals yet again. Entertaining game.

Poor goal to go up 3-2 for the Netherlands

I haven't been able to watch but here is what I've gathered from twitter: Cahill scored a brilliant goal and got a second yellow, Australia was up 2-1(!), and RVP equalized. Am I missing anything?

No Pique or Xavi for Spain today. Also Xavi transferred from Barca to some club in Qatar

a draw all but eliminates Spain. Hopefully they don't sit back how they usually do and we see some attacking football from them.

I wouldn't say that. They would just have to beat the Aussies in the last game and the Oranje would have to beat Chile or draw with them, basically. True, the Oranje will have nothing to play for, but I still wouldn't rule out the Oranje winning or drawing with Chile in the last game. (Technically, even if Chile wins, Spain would have a chance to advance, but it would come down to goal differential, and with Spain already down 5 goals I think we know that ain't happening for Espagne.)

Also, new rule: we must refer to the Dutch as "the Oranje" because it is awesome to spell "orange" with a j.

You're way off. A draw gives them 1 pt and Chile 4. Even if they make up the 3 pt differential they still have a 6 goal difference to make up.

Oh you are right. For some reason I was thinking that the outcome of the Chile/Australia game was 3-1 Australia. Obviously it was Chile that won that one. Not sure why I had it reversed in my memory.

Absolutely insane amount of Chileans in the Maracana today. Apparently they stormed into the stadium and pretty much rioted before the game hahaha.

How did FIFA not suspend Diego Costa? You can be assured if that was an American he is getting at least a game suspension for his actions.

Wow what a poor showing for a team that is completely STACKED with talent.

World Cup hangover? Italy was knocked out in the first round in 2010, after winning in 2006.

I can say the first World Cup I thoroughly remember watching the majority of the games in was 2002(I am only 20) and this is by far the most enjoyable one. Much more enjoyable than 2010.

Spain's poor performance this year sort of signals an end of an era. Similar to Les Bleu in the late 90s and early 00s. Probably see massive changes in the next European and World Cups.

The shift goes back towards Italy being dominant.
