can any of our resident recruiting gurus here at IE provide an overall update on "where we are at" in terms of recruiting for this years class?
seems like only guy weve been discussing is drue tranquil of late.
who else is in the pipeline? are we meeting our postitonal needs in this class?
a 2014 recruiting class summary...who is looking good for us, what do we have to be watching from here on out until first wed in feb.
any help on this appreiciated! (i know were "in season" now so most of our focus is on the job at hand and thats winning games on saturday)
Hmm, here's a quick rundown off the top of my head:
OL -- got 4 studs, done there unless we can get somebody too good to turn down like Damien Mama (unlikely but I believe will OV) or KC McDermott (Loy thinks we may have a shot late in the cycle)
RB -- don't really need anyone, will likely hold out for an elite guy or not take anybody, working on Bo Scarbrough, who will OV
QB -- got Kizer, great profile fit, done
WR -- got a really impressive athlete in Brent and a T.J. Jones-like potential starter in Holmes ... still working on just a couple guys like Lazard and McKenzie and Quick and I think that's it. (McKenzie seems likely to be Irish, unless he bombs his SAT)
TE -- got Weishar, an Eifert-like flex TE ... done here unless we can snag Luatua, who will OV and who we supposedly lead for. Would really complement Weishar as a Niklas-like monster athlete who can develop into a stud in-line blocker as well as a pass-catcher. Dalton Schultz is also interested but I don't think we lead and I think we'd prefer Luatua.
DL -- got a number of low-rated but high-upside DEs already, plus Hayes, who is relatively high-rated and appears to have the body to work at DT too ... working on Matt Elam, an elite NT, and Thomas Holley, an elite DE/DT in the mold of Eddie Vanderdoes (curse the name). Realistic shot at both, not sure we lead with either. Also working on Solomon Thomas, a great DE prospect (consensus top 50 overall) and a great profile fit, high ND interest but Stanford may lead. Depth needs are met, but we need a stud guy who we can plug in right away at NT with Nix gone.
LB -- Bonner (low-rated recruit who we offered because he showed us elite pass-rushing ability when he camped, consistently beat all of our OL commits in attendance) and Yeargin are natural CATs who the staff has said have the flexibility to play any LB position; we've got Martini at ILB, and if we get Tranquill we'll be done, although we will still take an elite LB talent if we can get one interested (Lorenzo Carter maybe, not sure who else is still out there with interest)
DB -- Position group of great depth so we don't really need anyone, but we're working on Nick Watkins at CB (reasonably good shot at him, don't think we lead though) and Juju Smith at safety, an elite talent who will OV but we don't lead or anything. We're also looking at Payton Hendrix, a safety who goes to school with Watkins. Not high rated but a good athlete and good profile fit.
Basically, I think we've met most of our major depth needs. The most glaring remaining need is a guy who can contribute right away in 2014 at NT, and we are working on that. Second-most glaring is guy who can contribute right away at ILB, another position of weakness right now, and there's really no one on the horizon who fits the bill, which is the most troubling thing about this class. Maybe Nyles Morgan, but it's becoming clear that he isn't really interested in ND. Other than that, the rest of the cycle will be going after studs with star-power to boost our overall athleticism and playmaking ability.
Mods, feel free to correct me or add to this post. Or anyone ... I can edit later. This was just off the top of my head.
