Devante is one heckuva athlete. I'd love to have him at ILB. Another name that I have been looking for (nothing so far) is Connor Strachan. He's on the short side but he moves extremely well and hits like a ton of bricks. For the teams that want to spread out our ILB's and make them tackle in space he'd fit in well. Currently committed to BC and have no idea if an offer from ND would change that but I would like to give it a shot.

thx for the updates gang-mcuh appreciated!

some general thoughts on recruiting:

(i know long way to go but) have to admit this class is not what i thought we would pull in after an undefeated regular season and a trip to the natty

how good of a recruiter is chuck martin? i have heard he doesnt do well in the living rooms...at all.

how many recruits is this "foreign language in HS" requirement costing us?

should we get more offers out earlier (even if they may be subject to the ND board i.e. non-commitable)?

Been saying this for months. He has family links to BC but he was really high on ND from the start of his recruiting process. If we offered he would already be ours but I'm not sure he would back out of BC at this point since he committed a while back.

I have always loved Devante Downs. The injury is a red flag, but if his rehab is going well I'd love to get involved.

The thing, is we really need guys we can get into the game right away. If we get Tranquill, not sure we need another project.

Connor seems like the real deal but for someone who played teams in his league (and had a brother and friends play in his league), he plays against very weak competition.

New England boarding schools are among the best for hockey, basketball, lacrosse in the country IMO, but very weak for football.

I watched some tape of him in camp setting I thought he moved extremely well in the open field tracking rb's. Its a valid concern not one that I have though. He's not going to have the upside that a Nyles Morgan does. However, I don't think he's a project. I think he could be used against teams that are going to want to spread us out and dink and dunk down the field. When we play MSU and Stanford, they'll want to run right at us we play our bigger (taller) ILB's. Rivals has him listed at 240 and they measured him at that camp over the summer.

Understand where your coming from, I just don't think Connor is a project. Already 240 according to both sites and has been playing ILB for awhile already. Don't think he'd be an every game starter but I do believe we could roster shorter, faster/quicker and lighter ILB's to play against the teams that are going to try and do what I explained. Wouldn't suggest having too many spots devoted to that but if we had 2 ILB spots specifically for that type of player.

Oh, I was just talking about Downs. I don't know anything about Strachan but this is starting to sound like Luke Kuechly the sequel ... ND passes on a stud ILB because he is too small, only to have him to go to BC and become a star. (could also be Joe Bolden, except that Bolden actually was a top 100 player) If Tranquill doesn't work out and what you are saying about him is true, I'd be all for an offer.

I don't know why I was talking about taking both Downs and Tranquill above. The last I heard, if we get Tranquill we are done at LB except for elite prospects. I take that to mean top 100-level. No way we'd take both Tranquill and either of Downs or Strachan.

Not sure what is being missed here. We have Martini (thats one) and your initial statement said if we get Tranquill (thats two). I would hope that if we land Tranquill we only go after the elite after having two already. I was saying we go after the elite no matter what, thats a good idea no matter who's committed. If we don't get Tranquill we still have 1 and I would bet that we look for others.

I'm saying that even if we get Tranquill, we should get another true ILB, even if he's not elite. That's it. Obviously you disagree, and perhaps the staff too, and that's fine. But there's nothing left to write about concerning this disagreement.

Tranquill: ND had inched out in front as of Sunday, but he's spoken to both staffs this week and he's going back and forth. Family is concerned about the perception/reaction from the public if he flips, and they love the opportunity at Purdue. TV guys think he's Irish in the end.

South Bend Adams RB Shaq Vann is attending the OU game. He's having a big senior season and we are monitoring his play.

Tyler Plantz's brother Logan, OL, will also attend. We are evaluating him, probably for a preferred walk on spot.

Lots of 2015 visitors for OU.

ASU game in Texas will be a big recruiting day. Watkins and Hendrix will attend, as will a bunch of 2015 guys. Cooks is working hard on 2015 in Texas and thereabouts.

Yeah. I played in that league in high school. Great hockey. But let's just say the football is is a long way from South Florida. A small handful of kids will go on to D-1 ball, but rarely to top-tier programs. I believe ND's only player from the ISL in the last 15 years was Barry Gallup. I'd think Strachan would need to show a lot in camp.

I really don't like when limits are placed on recruits. Too short for linebacker is really something that I would question. I know that the prototypical size and speed is what you are looking for, and if you can get it by all means do it.

Lavonte David was considered too small to be a professional linebacker, and is working out very well in the league. The kid plays outside linebacker at 6'1" and 230ish pounds. He is a stud, and was a stud at Nebraska. Some kids just make plays

On linebacker "shortness":

This is all about "extension", not height. Because of the changing nature of the offensive game {spread field and stress everyone in the back 7 or 8}, even ILBs must have some "extension" to defend the pass, especially vs TEs. So, when you hear the height of some prospect, mentally say: how long are his arms? [I've said ego-centrically before that my own height is "just" 6'0", but the wingspan translates to 6'3". If I'd had any talent, I would have probably passed the measurables criteria.]

That said: if an ILB prospect has SPEEEEDDD and great reaction instincts, that cures almost all other problems in the end. If I was recruiting ILBs [or DBs], and could actually assess the following, I'd rate
a]. instincts;
b]. speed;
c]. extension; .... in that order {power sufficient for the position would be of course a starting point}. {and brains}. {and character}.

I think Thomas has said he's not making any visits or going to any games during the season. Rather will take visits after season and will be focused strictly on academics and campus life. Very different kind of recruit.

So do you guys think we get anyone to commit on or just after USC?

Luatua is probably the best bet for a commitment during that weekend. I think Watkins and Hendrix are possibilities but not sure they'd pull the trigger while on the visit. Tristen Hoge ('15) strikes me as someone who may make the call during his trip too...just a gut feeling.
