Aaron Lynch (freshman): Sacks 1 Ast, 5 Solo
Prince Shembo (freshman): Sacks 1 Ast, 4 Solo
So wait...was Prince the best player for ND before Lynch came along? You'd think with those numbers he would only improve...especially with more play time, right? So are you assuming Lynch would improve in a similar fashion?

Lynch was tied for 92nd in the country with sacks. So does that mean there are 92 other players across the country who would be ND's best player?

Don't taze me bro.. Someone else said "fancy stats like sacks", and all I said was "who needs fancy stats like sacks?"

It seemed to come across sarcastic when you said it.

This guy just layed some "fancy stats" right at your feet.....

It was more about calling sacks a fancy stat. Also, what doesn't show in those stats is the disruption, having to have him double teamed, opening up opportunities for other guys.

In the end we are probably both right. Lynch will eat up the BigEast, because the BE sucks, and we'll be fine. I just don't like this blaise attitude about shrugging off a kid with his (eventual?) talent.

Once again this isn't about Aaron Lynch being a good player and ND missing his presence on the field.

You stated that Aaron Lynch was and would have been ND's best player. I want to know why you think that he is a better player than Manti?

I don't think AL was one of our best players. I think there were better Freshmen, Tuitt, Niklas, and Nix, (though second year in program). And there will be better long term, most of last years class including Grace, Councell, Williams, etc. And there will be this year including Day:

Sheldon Day, DL -- It's rare for a freshman defensive lineman to make an immediate impact during his first spring practice, let alone a freshman defensive lineman that enrolled early. Day represents a rare blend of mass, quickness, tenacity, and strength. Just looking at him, one would not unlikely call out "pass rusher" as a defining term for his body style. He's thick, maybe 6-2, and possesses wide hips and thick upper legs. Then again, those same characteristics define former Irish great Trevor Laws, as well as former Miami and NFL great Warren Sapp. Because Day penetrates quickly and wreaks havoc during passing plays, he should be a regular in the Irish rotation this fall. In fact, he might be Notre Dame's most important down lineman during obvious passing situations. It will be interesting to see how defensive line coach Mike Elston and defensive coordinator Bob Diaco mix up where Day lines up to best allow for match ups with offensive linemen that often struggle during pass protection. If Day displays the ability to play the run as well as he proves he belongs on the field during passing plays, he could challenge for a starting position. Having seen Day play live and on television during his playing days for Indianapolis (Warren Central), I knew he would be very good for the Irish. I did not, however, anticipate him being this advanced and pushing for immediate playing time during spring practice. That proves to me that he desires as much information as possible (learning technique, technique, and more technique) to help him reach playing on Sundays. At this rate, it's hard to project Day as a future NFL player. Still a long way to go, but he's headed in the proper direction if he wants to play in the NFL. First things first; Day needs to continue to get into even better shape and learn how to better use his hands to disengage offensive linemen. He's advanced for his age, but a full summer and fall of working on technique should make him really hard to handle during one-on-one situations.

Freebee from ISD.

On another thread they talked about reload versus rebuild, I think Day will be our first case!

You and me bro! Tuit was a disruptive force. AL made fine plays. But Tuit would leave a wake of bodies. Watch the replays.

I thought by the end of the year Tuitt was playing better but for Most of the year Lynch was better. Probably because he got to EE.

I also think that Tuitt played better than Lynch.

That's because Tuitt is a stud 3-4 SE. He is just enormous.

People want to talk about Aaron Lynch getting doubled, you all should watch what happened when Tuitt bumped down inside on 3rd downs. He was the one getting doubled a lot of the time.

But hey, that's what makes a great DL. Having more than one (or two!) guys who requires a double-team.

No one is denying that Lynch isn't a stud. But the fact remains that Notre Dame is pretty stacked on the DL and that mitigated the impact. Tuitt/Nix/Lewis-Moore; Day/Schwenke/Hounshell; Jones, etc. It's a deeeeeep rotation and all of them are big and tough as sh*t. All props go to this coaching staff for completely turning around what was usually a weakness for Notre Dame.

lol, I feel like I seriously blew this thread up with my question on the previous page about why Schlabach's comment was dumb. For the record I don't think Lynch would have been a better player in 2012 than either Manti or Eifert, or even a couple others. But Lynch was and is enormously talented, so Schlabach's calling him our best player seemed to me to be no more than normal sports journalist hyperbole. I mean it is actually nauseating how they all exaggerate constantly ("It was the greatest game in the history of Madison Square Garden" ... "in the greatest game of so-and-so's career, ...") When people were saying Schlabach's comment that our best player transferred to South Florida was the dumbest thing they'd ever heard, I honestly wondered which part they thought was dumb ... was Lynch transferring elsewhere (and I just hadn't heard yet)? Calling him our best player is not accurate, but it doesn't surprise me that a sports journalist would say such a thing in order to make the story more interesting, and I don't think it is a "dumb" comment so much as just the sort of annoying colorful exaggeration that sports journalists customarily make. I'm sure if Slaughter or Cierre Wood left the team he'd call either of them our "best player" too.

Now, if Bruce Heggie left the team, and Schlabach said our best player had transferred, then we are in dumbest-comment-ever territory.

ESPN Insider

Michigan Wolverines among hyped teams that won't win BCS title in 2012 - NCF - ESPN

"Hyped teams that won't win it all"

Michigan
Michigan St.
Kansas St.
Notre Dame
Nebraska

Off of their analysis and PFEI computation Notre Dame has a 28 percent change of going 8-4 --- with a 94 percent chance of going between 6-6 -- 10-2

The PFEI is a computation that pretty much states your chances of winning the BCS NC --- the Top 20 are the ones that have what it takes to win it all. ND is ranked 28th ---- If ND can get to 9 wins this season then likelihood will be that they will be in the Top 20 next year.

...Michigan is 33
MSU 25
KSU 48
NEB 32

Just heard this nice little tidbit on Cowherd's radio show. I know there's a ton of Cowherd haters here, but give me a chance on this one.

Herd was talking about the new BCS gig and how ND affects it. He likes ND in the picture. His researchers did analysis of the biggest concentration of ND fans nationwide. Here we go...

1) NY
2) Chicago
3) Boston
4) Philly
5) LA

I thought Philly would be higher, and I don't know where the hell LA come from. But I thought it was interesting

That sounds about right. Thought DC might be on the list also.

LA does surprise me a little to be honest. But look at that list, biggest cities in America, mass markets, are ND fans. :)

Me too. It wasn't that he ripped it, nor about red meat. It was that he did it on such a logical and simple basis and made Reiley look like such a fool. Guess who ESPN will not renew next year?

Love this guys comment to the article....

Love em or hate em ND is the most relevant college football program of ALL time. They have not played up to that billing since 94 a seventeen yr period. Have we forgotten current " King of the Hill" Alabama was playing @ a pedestrian 92-67 pace between 1994-2007 and thats giving them back the 16 wins the NCAA took away(try an actual record of 76-83) far more irrelevant than ND's 161-94 record between 1991-2011 or USC's 149-96 record between 1981 and 2001. The Irish will be back and the whole sp...more

So basically... they don't like that we beat them (understandable), and they don't like that we're treated as basically our own conference within the BCS (sorta not really understandable).

The keeping the Big 12 together thing was ridiculous though. As was the hating Notre Dame because we're a good academic institution... why would you hate someone for that!?!? The "couple inches" thing and the "over-hype" are the two most ridiculously incorrect 'reasons' for being a hater... in the grand scheme of things, for every good call we've gotten we get a bad one (fumble call vs. Miami => phantom clip vs. Colorado, GL stand against Stanford => TD "catch" for BYU, etc. etc. etc.) and statistics straight up prove that we are, over the past decade or so when people like to talk about the "over-hype," FAR AND AWAY less overrated than FSU, Oklahoma, etc. year in and year out based on pre-season projections compared to regular season results. That line of hating frustrates me because you have to be downright stupid to believe it.

Homer announcers? Pat Haden used to do our games! Tom Hammond can't remember our players names and I have a tough time justifying Mayock as a homer.
