Awards season...
Sigh.
Updated list from Sapp. He also noted that is now not considered a "Junior Day" just an unofficial visit for some current juniors. They will schedule a real "Junior Day" at a later date. Of note, Jamarco Jones will not be making the trip this weekend.
Jan. 19 - Junior visitors:
OG Jimmy Byrne - committed
OL/DL Sam Mustipher - interested
WR Thaddeus Snodgrass - offered
DE Andrew Williams - offered
RB Stanley Williams - committed to Georgia (tentatively scheduled)
.... bored.... data dump: What the staff faces.
I looked at the 249 top 249 for 2014. To avoid going crazy, I looked at "bigs" only [Oline, Dline]. Here are some facts:
1). There are 35 offensive linemen listed. Nine of these guys are already committed [ TX; IA; OSU; WI; MIA; LSU; and USC with THREE. Aren't they paying any attention?]. Notre Dame seems to be involved with 8 of these uncommitteds, and there are three more who list interest in ND without offers. ND appears to be a favorite with only two offers, but is warmly thought of by two other non-offers. Since we will probably want to get four Oline in the 2014 class, this might not be too bad a start this early. The Olinemen who are "warmest" to us, however, are all in Florida with all the competition that involves.
2). There are 29 defensive ends listed. Three of these guys are already committed [FSU; BYU; TX]. Notre Dame appears to be involved with nine of the uncommitteds, and could be construed as a leader in four cases. These guys are spread out in GA, MI, NJ, and OK. This seems to be a similar situation to OT --- hopeful but no slam dunk.
3). There are 16 DTs listed. Three of these guys are already committed [FL; FSU; and Notre Dame {Halleluia!}]. Of the uncommitteds Notre Dame seems involved with three others [remember that I'm only speaking of the 249 list] of which only one other than Hayes shows specific interest, and he is a KS kid with no offer yet. Since we should take two DTs next cycle, we have some work to do, even with the early Christmas present of Jay Hayes.
4). What's Alabama's situation like? Alabama doesn't just throw out an offer and automatically get a "Warm Interest" back, but they are pretty close. Saban has yet to get a commit [and I don't think that he necessarily wants them this early], but he does have 14 players saying that Alabama leads or is "tied" with others. These include three Olinemen, EIGHT DEs, and three DTs. Saban will once again be able to pick as many as he chooses and others will get his leavings. Eight of these players are in the 249 top 50. [including all three DTs].
5). Who's "growing" this talent? With the Oline, FL has 5, OH and CA 4, and TX, LA, and AZ 3. With the DEs, GA has 4, and FL and CA 3. For the DTs, no one produces more than two, but the deep south together have ten of the 16, and if you add VA that's two more.
All of the above demonstrates, I believe, the uneven playing field of recruiting that Kelly and the staff must face. These sorts of awarenesses should make us marvel at their accomplishments even more than we typically do.
apologies to Greyhammer for the length of the post.
Jimmy Byrne didn't make the top 247. I find that surprising.
(Now Greyhammer is going to have to read your post twice, OMM, ha ha ha!)
How many spots do we have for 14?
