Who do you want to replace Brian Kelly?

Or he's just tired of what he perceives as a headache/uphill battle.

Multi-million dollar salary aside, he HAS to be ready to be done with the headaches at ND after 7 years. Does anyone make it that long here?

we should be on the phone with dan mullen and chris klieman.

dan mullen is still young (44), and has been a head coach in the sec west for 8 years. he's averaged close to 8 wins a year and is 29-35 in sec conference play at fricking ms state.

Chris Klieman? Lol you aren't serious are you?

Maybe as a D Coordinator. He'd probably actually do well at that.

Top of mind, in no particular order (please keep in mind it's Saturday night)...

Aranda
Miles
Fleck
Strong
Sanford
Who else?

No way I'd want Aranda as the head coach of Notre Dame (see Bob Davie)
Miles is a few years from a dementia diagnosis
Strong just hot canned for being the first HC in 50+ years to have a losing record
Sanford as HC?

Fleck is the only HC I'd consider from that list.

Hasn't there been talk of him "looking around" after most years during his tenure?

Every single year since 2012. That's how he's leveraged the contract extensions. These "reports" are one of two things:
1) Smokescreen by his agent to put ND in a shit-or-get-off-the-pot situation... possibly negotiating a buyout or some type of "walk away" so he can take another job.
2) Smokescreen by another source to try to get Kelly fired.

I wouldn't read too much into that Yahoo story. Feels like Kelly - or more likely his agent - covering bases in case the rumors running rampant on message boards the last few days turned out to be true.

Plus Forde is still bitter that ND fired Willingham

worked for osu.

Didn't Tressel build Youngstown? I think so.

Klieman's recruits are finally starting to get some playing time in Fargo...and they aren't nearly as good as in years past. Trust me on that. If you want the guy who built NDSU, call up Craig Bohl in Wyoming. Neither of them are up to ND standards. ND can do so much better than FCS coaches...

He'd be a fool to try that. Make ND fire you, collect your 25 million, take a year off, and then reassess your situation. Why take anything less than the minimum amount you're owed.

If Brian Kelly does in fact keep his job, who are some good DC candidates?

Brent Venables? He's got it made down at Clemson, so I'm really sure why he would leave there.

Dave Aranda? Ed Orgeron was a very average hire by LSU and I doubt he ever takes them to the playoffs. Would Aranda want to coach with him?

Todd Orlando? His defenses at Houston have given up a lot of points in some games. Could that be because of lack of recruits going to Houston? I'd think he could be successful with the young talent in the secondary on our defense.

Dave Doeren? I don't know anything about him but he fielded a pretty good defense at Wisconsin this year.

doeron might actually be realistic.

orlando will either get the hc job at uh or go to texas with herman.

aranda has said he's staying at lsu.

venables is jsut waiting for the purple wizard to retire.

Top 10 classes you say. 247 composite team rankings:

2013: 5th
2014: 11th
2016: 13th
2017: 15th

Only one class in the top 10, one just outside. And each year trending down. Enough talent to win at least 8 games this year for sure. But not enough to compete with the big boys...example USC classes.

Evan the 15th rated class should be good enough to finish better than we did. The talent I believe is there for the most part.

I haven't kept up with this thread but any talk about Matt Rhule?

He should be:

Young? Check
Fiery/Energetic? Check
Good X's and O's? Check

IMO Rhule is a safer, more established version of Fleck. Rhule has a lower ceiling than Fleck, but a much higher floor.

247 has Notre Dame ranked 6th in the composite rankings for 2017, not 15th. So two of the past 4 classes are on pace to be in the top 10, with one class just outside.

Yes. Hadn't even thought of Rhule in all this. Actually a much smarter pick than Fleck, IMO.
Would be nice if he'd ever coached anywhere beside Temple. But he's done enough good things there that I don't look forward to seeing him on the opposite sideline in our next game. And, FWIW, he knows Philly and New Jersey, which are huge recruiting grounds for us.

I was in Philly over the holiday and everyone I talked to was convinced that Rhule to ND was a done deal. Major article in the Philadelphia Inquirer on Thursday.
