If PJ Fleck wasn't cheating on his wife I think he would be a perfect hire. Young, energy seems to not give AF which you need to have when you are recruiting against Harbaugh and Urban and the man can flat recruit. Maybe he's a little to young but I wouldn't mind maybe catching the next big thing before anyone else did. If not Sanford? I know they wouldn't give him the job this early but I hope he returns to roam the sidelines some day

I heard something from a MSU student today which is very interesting. He said he's heard of talk at the school of Dantonio to ND. I hope not.. Not a fan of his.. This is just what I heard. No other source.. Just passing any info along.. Has anyone else heard anything?

Dantonio would be dead within 6 months dealing with the rigors of being the ND Chief.

Flat recruit in the MAC? Yes. How does that translate to P5? How does that translate to Tier 1 P5's? How good are his assistants on the road in a Dallas Gant's house or Markese Stepp's when they're up against the heavies? A quick glance at his WMU recruiting shows a lot of #1 MAC classes headlined by the #368 WR in 2013, Corey Davis and his highest ranked recruit would have most likely been at ND if he didn't have a major injury... lil Tranquil.

He could be a future Bobby Petrino, he could be the next Brian Kelly. He's got a thin tree right now. The best thing he has going for him is he played for a Miami U alum so he's got some Cradle in his system.

He would probably have a heart attack at the press conference.

There is no earthly way that Jim Tressel is our next head football coach.
I'd take six months of Dantonio though.

Agreed, no way Coach Coverup could get on an ND search list.

Before this season, I would have agreed with you on Dantonio. He's one of the all-time winningest coaches at MSU. Yet take away the annual 1AA cupcakes like Furman and his record would be similar to Kelly's.

Speaking of Kelly, Dantonio's only 2-3 in head to head competition. I want someone better than Kelly no a variation on the same theme.

They've gone from the playoffs to likely bowl ineligible in a year. In press conferences, Dantonio's said the Spartans have been "outplayed, outoughened, and out coached". Sounds like Kelly doesn't he? Bogs would be raging with another "the coach is throwing the players under the bus" post.

ND has got to do better.

Why do we even think a change will be made? F. Lee Swarbrick, Kelly's attorney, informed us on the State Television Network that everything is fine.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zwuSXr-syuU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Some nuggets (from about 9-12 minutes in):
"We want to win and we want to win championships, but if that's all you're measuring it [the program] on you'll get really bad reads."
Right, but surely winning plays some role in your assessment?

"You don't have any of the signs of a program in distress."
Losing to garbage teams week in and week out, weekly social media embarrassments, coaches being fired, HC blaming everyone else, ND becoming the easy win on everyone's schedule, etc., etc.? What would constitute "distress," counsel?

"Some teams...win games that maybe they shouldn't. They find a way. This team has struggled to find a way. It has been in a position to win every game."
Meaning: it is all random. This is a loser attitude. And we shouldn't be in a "position" to win games. We should be totally destroying these garbage opponents.

"My confidence in Brian is as strong today as it was when we were on our way to an undefeated season and a national championship [sic]."
If so, F. Lee Swarbrick is delusional. Also, can we stop with the 'undefeated season' B.S.? It's an embarrassment to see people wearing t-shirts that say something everyone knows to be false.

"I understand the distress our fans feel, especially in a social media world that wants instant results..."
It's year 7. Year. 7.

This circus has become a disgrace to the university, but the higher-ups are circling the wagons around Kelly. If ND is going to insult our intelligence in this way, while demanding more and more for tickets, the whole lot should be fired, starting with Swarbrick.

I used to think you were level-headed and even composed in your approach. I'm seriously beginning to doubt this.

I agree. I don't think Dantonio is necessarily better than Kelly as a HC. But I do believe he's better than what Kelly has become.

That would be the end of my ND fandom after 35+ years. I know his family and they are all cocksuckers. He would do what Kelly does and just hire all his boys including his idiot brother.

Jay Cutler, is that you?

I've got too much free time this morning. I think Kelly is coming back unless he is hired away, but just for grins. I'm biased towards experience, but doubt anyone comes from the NFL.

Make the call, get the no, has a sads, move on:
1. Urban Meyer - the only way he surpasses Saban as THE coach of this generation is to come home and make it rain.
2. Chris Petersen - Proven program builder, but no reason to come.

Assistants worth kicking the tires on:
1. Brent Venables - Learned from Snyder, Stoops etc. Old enough that willing to overlook lack of head coaching experience. Recruits and defenses bring the lumber.
2. Ed Warriner - Knows the program, experience with successful coaches, could immediately utilize offensive pieces.
3. Lane Kiffin - somebody has to take the chance, has learned from the best, can recruit, has experience, downsides are known.
4. Don Brown - A little old, but has head coaching experience, and his defenses are rocking. Bonus points for irritating Harbaugh.

Worth an interview, but need more seasoning:
1. Tom Herman - build something
2. Mike Sanford - be a head coach
3. PJ Fleck - make a P5 stop
4. Justin Fuente - need a couple more years at VT
5. Rhett Lashlee - potential

Head coaches that an offer they can't refuse should work:
1. Bob Stoops - time for a change of scenery, still only 56
2. Ken Niumatalolo - would probably win big....eventually
3. Bret Bielema - The Big Bluster, but I can has fullbacks? Tight ends would also be back in a big way.
4. Charlie Strong - BUY LOW = PROFIT

Coaches I'm passing on:
1. Les Miles - no thanks.
2. Gary Patterson - Year 7 = 8 - 5, Year 13 = 4 - 8, Year 2016 = Keep eating brisket.
3. Mark Dantonio - we beat him, why join him?

Did you not read my post?

In between those two sentences, I enumerated several reasons why Dantonio is no better than Kelly.

Do you think D'Antonio would have performed better than Brian Kelly with the same talent? Michigan St. recruiting rankings are pathetic compared to ND.

Yes.

I think ND would have been better with Dantonio and MSU would have been less successful with BK.

I am on board with almost every piece of it. The candidates are realistic and ones that I could get excited about. I would interview all of those assistants you mention and see what they offer. I would gladly take any of the head coaches you list, but I'm just not sure about Charlie. And I would pass on all three that you list as passes.

No, I don't. Ara beat Notre Dame 4 in a row with less talent at Northwestern than Dantonio (BTW, there is no diacritical mark in his name). Ara then came to ND and was within 1:33 minutes of winning a national championship his first season. He was 9-0 versus Northwestern drubbing them each time. Dantonio is no Parshegian.

Once again I'll repeat for the third time this morning:

Before this season, I would have agreed with you on Dantonio. ... ND has to do better.

The "out coached" that I wrote and you chose to put in bold was a post game quote of Dantonio's. They were his words not mine.

As you note, "Michigan St. recruiting rankings are pathetic compared to ND" so he would not have had the talent that Kelly has , would he? But even if he did, he would still be playing a bunch of freshman in the secondary because of injuries and off field misconduct. And he would still be having a problem with his players failing to "wrap up" tackles like he does at MSU (read the Freep article, again his quote not mine).

Dantonio on Michigan State's skid: 'Outcoached, outtoughed, outplayed'

EAST LANSING – Mark Dantonio uttered six seldom-used words to highlight the biggest problems in Michigan State’s fourth straight loss.

“Plan, structure, execution.”

“Outcoached, outtoughed, outplayed.”

MSU’s 10th-year coach tonight recapped his reeling Spartans’ 54-40 loss to Northwestern from a day earlier and called it “one of the more poor outings we’ve had on defense.”

“I think six games in, you expect more from our entire football team,” Dantonio said. “I don’t know that it’s one particular group of people, and I include coaches in that as well. … I’ll take the brunt of all this, and we have to do better.”

Is it too late to get Harbaugh?

Two days ago, Lax made the call.

John Harbaugh... with Super Bowl ring and 6 playoff appearances... is on the "hot seat" in Baltimore if he doesn't make playoffs. Can't make this up. At least give him a call.

Hasn't been a college HC but he does have extensive experience with Special Teams and DBs in college and NFL before becoming Baltimore HC.

Would be great. We've got a soft culture at ND and need a tough coach who plays a physical style of football. I've officially turned into the cranky old ND fan who wants the next coach to use a FB, throw to TEs, and have the ability to actually go under center when needed.
