Darkest Dungeon is free to play this weekend, and it's also on sale right now if you decide to pick it up. I just started playing it, dark doesn't begin to describe it. It's a turn based RPG style game, and it's tough! Granted I haven't been playing it very long, but it has the feel that the game evolves as your characters get stronger, keeping the challenge level high. I don't think you can just grind and make it easy. Every dungeon I go to I have to make decisions like "Do I turn back, or risk pushing one more room and possibly losing a hero?"

There's a very unique stat line of "Stress" for each hero in your party. Stress builds up as you do dungeons and fights, and characters can have various Quirks tied to them that either increases or decreases Stress gains depending on the conditions. If the stress gets too high, characters can develop temporary or permanent Quirks like "Masochist" or "Paranoid." Heroes can release stress in a Tavern by drinking beer, gambling, or visiting the Brothel. Some characters can only relieve stress by visiting an Abbey and communing with the Light, Meditating, or...getting flogged basically  You can also send heroes to the Sanatorium to have permanent Quirks removed through various means.

The cool thing is there's a revolving cast of random heroes constantly approaching the manor where you're adventuring. It means that heroes that happen to die during adventures (Death is permanent!) can be replaced, although you're also giving up any progress they attained during their adventures. That's where the risk/reward comes into play when trying to push "One more room!" in dungeons. Sometimes you just have to abort a quest if a trek didn't go as planned. You certainly get attached to certain characters more than others. You may develop a "main party," and when they're too stressed for an adventure you go to a backup group of heroes waiting in the wings (You can recruit multiple different party members and keep them on the bench till you need them).

Unlike other games in the genre, there doesn't appear to be a Save/Load feature that I've seen, everything is Autosave. That means you can't game the system by going down a wrong path and reloading to a safer, earlier save. In place of that it seems you can abandon and flee a quest at any time, even if you're in the middle of a battle.

It's not a sprawling, 3D open world, but you have choices on where you go to quest during the campaign. Visually it has it's own style, it's not photo realistic if that's your thing, but the combat requires strategy as does party planning. Some dungeons are more grueling than others, and each time you visit the layouts change as do the traps and treasure.

As mentioned the game is free to play this weekend, but the base game is also on sale for $6.24 (75% off) which is a good deal I think. There's also a version with all the DLC for something like $16-17, which is what I already got and have been playing around with. The reviews on Steam average out to Very Positive, which is a good sign.

People keep finding evidence and references to zombies in Warzone.

https://www.ladbible.com/technology...one-season-4-could-introduce-zombies-20200609

I think it would be cool as hell if hordes of zombies were moving about the map while you're trying to eliminate other players.

It would be mostly pure chaos, as you can't really hide and sneak if you're constantly shooting at zombies as you move around... even with silencers, gunfire draws other players.

But it would also reward the guys that are really patient and find good places to camp out with a sniper rifle where (1) zombies can't reach and (2) other players can't easily pinpoint you. Those places are probably few and far between, but I'm gonna start scouting lol.

It would be sweet as a big October/Halloween update.

There's a spotify playlist with most of the music from all the TH games that's a real nostalgia blast.

"So here I am
Doing everything I can
Holding on to what I am
Pretending I'm a superman"

Right in the feels.

Europa Universalis IV has come out with what I imagine will be it's final expansion/DLC.

EU4 came out several years ago now. It appears Paradox drops a solid base version of their games (EU, Crusader Kings, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron), charges purchasers about $40. Then will support the game for 6-7 years with updates that radically change the game, as well as some expansions that will have major impacts on different parts of the game as well if that is what a player is interested in (the latest one focuses on Germany, Catholic states, and the Papacy. Prior ones may focus on China, or Japan, or India, American Indians, Trade, etc. Just some examples.

I bought the new one yesterday, went to start my typical Bavarian campaign and discovered BAVARIA NO LONGER EXISTS. It is now like 3 or 4 separate little counties. This changes my plans significantly.

My goal on this new campaign, regardless of which German state I use (In the past I have favored Duchy of Bavaria, Archbishopric of Cologne, or the Teutonic Order), my plan is to see if I can establish some sort of land holding that provides the right amount of flexibility to sniff out the Reformation as it occurs. The Reformation generally rips West Central Europe apart through wars, my goal is to prevent Protestant princes from getting very powerful, demand their conversion back to Catholicism, and slowly but surely add land. If I can have Germany de facto unified via land grabs, alliances, and vassals by about 1700, I think I'll be able to look east towards Poland, or Alsace-Lorraine. If the Austrians haven't swallowed up Bohemia by then I may do so.

I also recently bought The Witcher 3. Holy shit lmao it is a difficult game.

Anyone have one of those all-in-one emulator game systems, like retro SNES or something like that? Thinking about getting something like that for my son for his birthday or Christmas. He'll be seven. Any recommendations?

You can buy them pre-made, but that ends up being pretty expensive. The cheapest way to do it is build one yourself via a Raspberry Pi, but that requires more online research than you may be comfortable with. A good middle-ground is to just buy the retro mini-systems retail (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.) that interest you. Will be easier and less expensive than buying a custom-built emulator pre-loaded with everything, but it'll only have the most popular titles (meaning you're SOL if you're looking for arcade games or more obscure titles), and it's not all contained in one neat package. But it's worked well for me. My kids love the old classics.

Huge Switch sale going on right now. Grabbed Skyrim for $30.

How goes your Shadow of War progress? I perfected my build, got 1200 Assault Rating in all four regions, and then liquidated everything so I could restart on Brutal. Just wrapping up in Seregost now before I move onto Gorgoroth.

I have a SNES classic, a rasbpi and a PlayStation Classic. Both classics are hacked and I actually recommend the PSC. It’s easy to hack. For mine I simply put a retroarch thumb drive in it and it just works. I have every Atari gane, nes game, snes game, 100s of arcade, ps1, Dreamcast, etc games in this thing,... all on a tiny lil thumb drive. Also, if that system ever had a hack system like game genie it’s fully functional in game. It’s amazing.

For just your kid alone, I’d go with one of the Nintendo classics without hacks.

Another thing for WZ players, it won't be going away. WZ is going to continue to adapt with each new game that comes out. They will be expanding the maps and adding stuff through out the years.

I kind of like the weird PS5 design?

I definitely like the uniform look with Sony’s other accessories that they’ve designed for it. I also like that it appears to come with an actual stand used for horizontal AND vertical orientations.

I like Horizon 2’s visuals. Looks beautiful. Hopefully the stealth mechanics are better.

Def gonna get the version with a disc drive. Gold Edition Steelbooks 4 life.

Weird in that I felt like the wavy design was an odd choice, though it looks good. Could’ve easily been a disaster going that route.

And it’s def preferable to Xbox’s oversized-speaker/undersized-minifridge look.

I'm a fan of the look as a concept, but in reality that thing is going to clash in a major way with my entertainment center and I imagine I'm not alone. The wife will be thrilled...

Another thing I thought about lol. That doesn’t mesh with any existing room designs... unless someone out there has already modeled their room after their weird internet modem/router, in which case they might be okay.

Shoutouts to Sony for trolling everyone with the 'Spider-Man: Miles Morales' reveal lol.

Played it off like a headlining title release for the PS5...

They quietly clarify this morning that it's actually an expansion/next-gen upgrade for the current Spider-Man game.

New Warzone modes dropping with season 4 sound pretty sweet.

There's a 'realism' mode (Acamp!) where the HUD is minimized and damage is akin to hardcore modes.

There's 'juggernaut' mode where three juggernaut crates will drop on the map, allowing three players to play Warzone as juggernauts (I'm assuming they'll drop with each circle closing to create chaos in the smaller zones; imagine all the third-party kills you could rack up when solo players or different teams are working together to kill a juggernaut).

Most excited for 'Warzone Rumble' mode, though... 50 v 50 team deathmatch on the Warzone map. That's a lot of cross-communication to deal with if they don't limit who can hear who on each team, but the large-scale deathmatch should be a blast either way.

I actually haven’t enjoyed realism mode previously. The damage is normal,... the realism is just not being able to see your hud. Maybe they adjusted it. If they set it to hardcore damage and made your aiming and other real time abilities compromised by running around non stop then it’d be perfect

PSA:

If you’re a Warzone-only player and want to level up your guns, it’s free multi-player weekend. Level up those SMGs, LMGs, or ARs.

If you want to level up your sniper rifles, play “Warzone Rumble.” It’s just 50 dudes with snipers shooting 50 other dudes with snipers from across the map. You drop in and see nothing but scope glint in the distance lol, it’s crazy. There’s no realistic application of 50v50 team death match aside from using sniper rifles from distance with the way they set the maps and respawns.

Took my AX50 from level 11 to 20-something in two hours of play last night.
