Got the complete edition of Witcher 3 for my birthday. Incredible game. Might end up giving Skyrim a run for it's money as my favorite. Not very far in (just arrived in Velen last night), so I'd appreciate any tips you might have to offer. My only complaint thus far (and it's a minor one) is that a lot of Talents/ Skills on offer seem pretty weak.

Awesome game. I'm going to start up a second run through of it this winter for sure.
I wouldn't consider myself good at the game, so I don't know if I have any useful info for you. The one thing I noticed was I think you get more XP for completing missions and tasks that are above your skill level. Also, I applied my skill points primarily to sword combat and igni. I used those the most. Also, pay attention to the mutagens and potions. When applied correctly they really do give you a huge boost and you feel like you're stronger with them than with out.

My best man keeps telling I have to try Witcher 3... I want to take on that and the Uncharted games but time is always hard to find....
Yes, took an extended weekend for it... Playing right now...
Graphics, it's the best looking FIFA yet, very noticeable how great it looks.
Play, passing and all free kicks are different, passing seems much more technical and FKs have been overhauled... Don't have either down yet but welcome the change.
Added features, if you're a career mode guy like me it's very limited, they added very little.
Haven't played the other modes
If you like the series it's a nice upgrade.
Picked up the first Dark Souls game on a Steam Sale last week after hearing greyhammer talk about it. I've always liked the "From Software" guys. They did the original Armored Core games, they afford you so much custom features and options when creating characters and using weapons. You're never limited to just a few weapons or even several.
I'm liking the difficulty and the concept so far. Returning as hollow means never having to reload after a death. The game was billed as having this deep, complex plot where much is left unsaid and you have to figure things out. I'm not sure that's really the case here. Rather than making you think or piece the things together yourself, I think the fact so much is unsaid (Almost a complete lack of dialogue all together, it's almost entirely just hack and slash) it's almost like they forgot to put a plot in. It seems like you just go ahead killing one boss after another, picking up keys in a Resident Evil style of progression that unlock different parts of the world and your next goal. The only time you get any kind of idea what may be going on is when you run into a very rare NPC that may talk about their own quest. Occasionally these NPCs change their dialogue, but I never know when, and sometimes I find myself going out of my way to return to some of these NPCs just to see if they have anything new to say...only to be disappointed. There's no narrator to advance the plot, and that's fine, but if I didn't know any better I would say there isn't a plot. At the point I'm at there's a very loose story where I know I'm supposed to ring some bells, but I don't quite remember why. I'm still pretty early in the game I gather, I've rang one bell and the last boss I killed was the Gaping Dragon. I'm very much enjoying the game, but I'm just not seeing this deep, thinking game I understood it to be. Not yet anyway.
The game has very little in the way of "plot" in a traditional sense. What it has in spades is world-building and lore. Most of the "story" is hidden in item descriptions. Its unlikely that you will discover the entire underlying narrative by simply playing the game through once (or even three times). Characters come and go on their own, and some only make appearances under the right conditions. Many have motivations that are not explicit, and often will lie to you to achieve their own needs. The game is aware that you are in the dark, and characters will often use that ignorance against you. For example, I played through the game twice before discovering a major character wasn't AT ALL what I thought he/she was and that totally changed the entire underlying narrative of what I was doing and who I was doing it for. TL;DR it is extremely unlikely that you will have ANY idea of who anyone is or why you are doing what you are doing on your first playthrough.
As far as what the game MEANS, my short version: The central theme of Dark Souls is the unstoppable cycle of life and death and the meaninglessness of any act taken to affect that cycle. This is a universe that is almost entirely dead, with its "big bang" moment (the sudden existence of fire and the disparity it created) long in the past. At this point, even the Gods themselves are attempting to burn their own lifeforce to lengthen their reign, but even that is almost over. Some Gods have even destroyed their kingdoms attempting to recreate the original flame, but failed miserably. As a result you are a "hero" who has come at the end of the universe's existence, and the central question is what you do: Do you attempt to lengthen the current cycle, or do you accept that the flame will fade and embrace the dark? The choice is illusory. Neither of these choices is inherently good or bad, and neither of them really matters. The world will end, the only question is if it is now or later.
P.S. I'm super jealous that you get to play this game knowing so little. I wish I could redo that first playthrough again. So many great and frustrating moments.

That last paragraph reminds me of morrowind. Greatest game I ever played. Would love to go play it again for the first time

I'm beginning to regret my Knight a bit too. For general fights it's easy mode, my shield eats all damage and I can counter attack or parry/riposte for easy kills. Bosses, on the other hand, make me feel like a slug that just eats damage, you would think even the larger ones would be less maneuverable than myself but they all seem more agile. Most bosses I've dropped on my own, but there was one I struggled with...Capra Demon I think. I look at the guide and it says "If you're melee, you're going to have a bad time." It seemed to say that for a lot of fights. I get the feeling range and speed trump all in boss fights. My shield is next to useless unless the boss is only one size greater than me so I can parry. I'm wondering for a first play through if switching to a caster or a more agile Thief might be more effective against bosses.
Just got a promotional e-mail from Ubisoft about the "Overwatch map" in For Honor. It has absolutely nothing to do with the game Overwatch, it's just 100% click-bait. Pretty shameful.
Look through this thread and you will find a lot of talk about Witcher 3. I know I have posted about it and others too.
A generally good tip for bosses is to learn how to read their attacks and dodge rather than block. A lot of bosses can eat your stamina in one hit, making your shield relatively useless. Also keep an eye on your equip load; if you have too high of a percentage your character will be slow overall and "fat roll".
I love the Dark Souls-style combat mechanics. Seems obviously superior to Bethesda's basic hack-n-slash system. Thus far, I've relied almost entirely upon Quick Attack, Dodge and Quen. Aside from the occasional Aard or Igni to clear poison gas, and Yrden versus Wraiths, none of the signs seem worth the hassle.
All of my skill points have gone into Combat. I'll start investing in Alchemy late game to pump my damage, but it doesn't seem worth the investment early on. And the Signs tree looks really weak. I wouldn't mind improving Quen, but I'd end up having to waste too many points in crappy skills to advance down the tree.
Qwent is amazing! Really impressive strategic depth for a game within a game. Will likely spend this evening on Gwent-related quests and rescuing merchants that have cards I need for my Northern Realms deck.
I got fucking addicted to Qwent. Almost needed to call the gambling hotline.
I am loving FIFA but have been wanting something Halloweenish to play, I almost bought Dead Rising 2 at Target, 19.99.....
PS4? Until Dawn.
