I finish very few of these open world story based games... Elder Scrolls, Red Dead, Dead Island, GTAs etc..... I enjoy them all but it's hard to dedicate the time.

I have finished a couple of GTAs and Red Dead...

Red Dead I have played all the way through three times... I loved it that much, I MADE TIME for that game.

Honestly, a new RD game can probably only disappoint, I would have massive expectations.

Just off memory, you hunt down three old gang members correct? Bill, Javier and Dutch... that was it correct? If the idea of a prequel following the old gang is correct I wonder if you are a lawman dealing with them and take out a few during the story only to miss the chance at the other four in the end... something like that...

That's honestly the only way the could go, given the ending of the last one.

Me too. The Witcher and Red Dead are my favorites of all time. No lie.

Never got into GTA...Because there were so many, they feel "cheap" to me.

GTA V was one of the best games I've ever played. Completely took the series to a new level. I would give it a try.

The story doesn't have to be about John Marston and his gang, imo. It could be an entirely new story. People forget about Red Dead Revolver...obviously a slightly different named game by Rockstar, but it was very similar in it's story telling and theme. GTA these days is never about the same characters, it's always a new protagonist(s) and the setting typically changes (Although lately it's been Liberty City/Vice City/San Andreas, just variations on the time period).

I wouldn't mind a new set of characters set in a brand new location. Potentially could bring the characters from 1-2 together for a Red Dead 3.

I preferred Vice City and San Andreas to V and IV. IV had a downright awful story at times, while V was better but felt a bit rushed. Splitting V between three characters made for an interesting twist, but it also means you don't get as close to any of them. Overall if felt like there were less story missions in V too, probably because they had to spend time on the Online aspect of the game.

I have something like 100 hours on Overwatch, more than I've ever spent in a single game. The Red Dead sequel is going to throw that to shit. The only other game that could have the same effect would be KOTOR or something similar from EA / Star Wars.

I think the 3 characters is what made it really cool to me. The missions where you had to flip between them mid-mission was one of the coolest things I have experienced as a gamer. I also think they had unique personalities that made you want to act in a way that reflects their personality. With Trevor I wanted to blow shit up and drive off road. With Frankin I had a sense of morality and wanted to ride a motorcycle. With Michael it was about making money and driving expensive cars and wearing expensive clothes. I was surprised how well I connected to all 3 characters.

It amazes me how that type of game has not been made for this generation of consoles. I literally would pay 200 dollars to play that game.

Yeah, never liked RDR...

I think John Marston is one the best video game characters ever. They should stick with his storyline. Doesn't mean he has to be the "main" guy, but a prequel as an outside guy looking into the gang would be money.

1) Majora's Mask/Ocarina of Time (Majora's gets the nod if I have to choose)
2) Dark Souls
3) Bioshock
4) Super Metroid
5) Grand Theft Auto III. (This is the only one on my list that can be suplanted by almost* any GTA game after it. While VC, SA and V were all better games, I still list GTA III because it changed everything.)

*GTA IV sucks.

EDIT: Portal 1 is actually my No. 2. Move the rest of the list down accordingly.

With Frankin I had a sense of morality and wanted to ride a motorcycle. With Michael it was about making money and driving expensive cars and wearing expensive clothes. I was surprised how well I connected to all 3 characters.

I could have just about done away with the Michael character personally. 90% of the game he was whiny and getting pushed around by his therapist, his family, etc. He had some cool moments, seeing him snap and take control at the end was some nice redemption, but it took a long time to get there. Obviously things wouldn't have tied together if he wasn't there, but you get the point. He just felt so damn wishy washy for so long.

Franklin was okay, he was honestly kind of bland. He wasn't a bad character, he just didn't have much of a personality to really speak of. He always wants to do the right thing, which is commendable given the people he hangs out with, but otherwise there's not much to connect with outside of that. Felt a bit like a washed out version of CJ from GTA San Andreas.

Trevor was wild and unpredictable and definitely made things interesting. Part of me wonders what a full game focused on him as the protagonist would be like, but I'm not sure that would have worked in the long run. I almost feel like 24/7 Trevor would have been overkill, like a sensory overload or maybe it would feel like they're trying too hard...but a gamer can dream.

In any case, it was an interesting concept, but remember that there can be too much of a good thing. By splitting the protagonist role into 3 separate entities they made things more complex but not necessarily better. Just when we begin to get to know Franklin we end up jumping to Michael and completely forget about Franklin for awhile. There was a stretch of the story that focused solely on Trevor and Michael for awhile and when they finally returned to Franklin it felt completely disjointed and unconnected. The best analogy I can give is the Star Wars franchise:
Episode IV: We follow Luke through almost the entire story, he's the point of reference for the audience, and we follow his arc through the entire picture.
Episode V: Be begin on Hoth, later splitting into separate story arcs between Luke/R2 and Han/Leia/Chewie/C3PO with all stories converging at Cloud City.
Episode VI: Begin on Tatooine, later splitting into three separate story arcs between Luke/Vader/Emperor, Han's team on the Endor moon, and Lando /w the fleet fighting in space. Starting to get to be too much.
Episode I: Begin with Jedi and Trade Federation, later splitting between story arcs /w:
a. Jedi fighting Maul
b. Anakin attacking Trade Federation in space
c. Princess invading palace to capture Trade Federation leaders, and finally
d. Gungans fighting Battle Droids in a separate confrontation.
It's like Lucas has ADHD. Too much, George, stahp!
Episode II: I don't even care to press on anymore, but it's just as bad as Episode I.
Episode III: Fuck you, George!

My point is it worked best when the story didn't constantly jump around from group to group. The more complex Lucas made it, and the more fractured the story arcs, the less successful the whole picture was.

My issue with GTA V is that it was the first time its humor has felt trite. It makes fun of everyone and everything to such an extent that it really doesn't say anything at all. It's like the opposite of South Park. South Park is crude and immoral but it does so in a way that makes you think about an actual point of view in a way that you previously hadn't. GTA just seems so obsessed with being edgy that you don't really care about anyone or anything. That used to be ok in the early 2000s, but now their satire of the American dream feels stale and stagnant. A youtube channel called Errant Signal discusses this and I think he really nails why I didn't care about GTA Vs story or world all that much. I'll try to find it if I get a moment.

1. Fire Emblem (all of the replay value)
2. NCAA 08 (the best in the series IMO)
3. GTA III (changed the game; favorite story)
4. Assassin's Creed II or Black Flag (cheating, but they're both amazing)
5. CoD: MW2 (best multiplayer)

Dark Souls difficulty is one of the most overstated things in video games. It's really not hard, it just has a different set of mechanics than most action games and it takes a bit to figure out how they work. Once you figure it out, it's pretty average. If you take the time to min/max your character the game is a downright cakewalk.

Damn, I don't know if I can do 5 games...it's so hard to pick when you're talking different genres. I could probably do a Top 5 from every genre, that would be far easier.

1. Final Fantasy II/IV. There are better games in the series, but this one has a special place for me. I spent many months chugging my bike about 3 miles almost entirely uphill to get to the video rental store and play that game. The ride back was always nice and relaxing since it was almost all downhill from there, but I did that ride every weekend to rent the game with lawn mowing money. I'd play my save file (Praying that it wasn't erased each week), then take the game back on Monday. Because it was a rental I'd have to start over a number of times. Lot of nostalgia, finally did get my own copy at least...but I can't tell you how many times I rented it, it was at least a few dozen.

2. Fallout 2. I appreciate Bethesda reviving the franchise, but none of the modern 3D games have captured the same feel and humor as the original titles. New Vegas came close, but only because Obsidian worked on it.

3. TIE Fighter. Such a cool perspective to fight the Rebels as the Empire, very few games let you play as the bad guy in the early 90s like this, and they made it SEEM like you were the ones doing the right thing. It was actually my first exposure to Star Wars, I hadn't even seen the movies by this point, so I have that game to thank for exposing me to that universe. It also was responsible for me learning how to upgrade and build computers as I had to tweak our family computer just to get the damn thing to work.

4. Zelda: A Link to the Past. Ocarina of Time gets all the love, and I love that game too, but I've probably played way more of the SNES version. I could have gone with other Zelda titles too, just about any of them but Windwaker. Fuck you, Zelda: Sailing.

5. I've got to have an 8-bit game on the list, and I choose River City Ransom. It was short, but a lot of fun. Inputting the passwords was not fun though.

Honorable mentions:
Super Metroid. I agree with greyhammer, and if I did a Top 5 of just side scrollers this one would definitely be there. I'd also consider putting it in my Top 5 and taking out Link to the Past.
Chrono Trigger. Also could have gone into my Top 5, but I tried to limit myself to one Squaresoft game. I played the hell out of this game, and I still do on occasion. Chrono Cross was pretty good too, but a little weird and disjointed in places.
NCAA Football games. Can't pick just one, played them every year from '98 till the 2014 version though.
Star Wars Galaxies. Played a lot of MMOs, a lot of good ones. Made some real life friends from this one though. Could have replaced TIE Fighter on my list, but the space was better in TIE Fighter as were the story lines.
Diablo II. I had a real problem putting this game down, and I still fire it up on occasion.
Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I've got a Play Choice 10 arcade in my garage with this one in it just cause.
Final Fantasy VI. Probably the best game in the series. Some consider VII to be better. VI could have easily replaced IV in my Top 5.

picking a firm top five is too hard...

I love(d):

NCAA series
MLB The Show
FIFA
Dragon Warrior on NES
Tecmo Bowls on NES
Ken Griffey Baseball (both of them)
Red Dead
Castlevania series (especially the NES ones, Super and SotN)
Pilotwings
Skyrim
Dead Rising (although some of the human bosses were almost game breaking)
Contra
Punch Out
GTA series

Castlevania brings me to why I hate God of War games... I only played a small portion of them ever, and that's fine, not really for me but I can see the draw... but they got so popular that the dumb boss battle stuff of action sequences where you just hit a button at the right time to continue the sequence that is already done for you bled over into the Castlevania games and was a big part of ruining them...

The God of Vania games sucked ass... and I'm bitter and petty... screw God of War for ruining one of my favs. ;)

Was anybody able to play the beta for Battlefield 1? I am curious to what people have to say.

Also, I would love to hear an unbiased opinion about the BF series from someone who has played COD, too. Comparisons, differences, dislikes, likes. I am a big COD fan but am willing to give BF a chance due to COD's trend of becoming lamely futuristic.

I watched my best man play one of these games a couple years back and it looked amazing... then he died and got all pissed off which was odd because he is not the type to get too worked up... he then explained that he basically had to start everything over again, I was like, "Start that level/quest from the start?"... he was like, 'No dude, everything.'

I decided then and there that these games are prob awesome but I simply didn't have the time or drive to dedicate to a game like that.
