Current Trojan would give up scholarship to make room for Redd | CollegeFootballTalk

The player said he would be “heartbroken” if it came to that because he had worked so hard to earn the scholarship. However, when the player initially received it, Kiffin explained that it was a year-to-year deal and that the player might have to give it back if USC’s roster limitations left no other recourse.

Although losing his scholarship would be a source of frustration, the player said he would remain with the squad. “I love this team,” he said.

The player said he understood the current situation regarding Redd and how his addition would improve the team’s chances to win the national championship. While hopeful of keeping his scholarship, the player would be willing to sacrifice it if absolutely necessary. I found his team-first approach to a potentially unpleasant situation admirable.

This offends me...

Why thank you my friend for defending my virgin dignity! You are a great buddy; but there is a funny story behind all of this. I will start a thread called "Kings of Nothing" when I have time and lay it out there. Don't want to clog up this USC thread. (Come on how many of you had the sewer reference "flowing" through your minds?)

So this is how I understand it, if anybody from last year or this year lose their scholarship that opens up a spot for another. So if Rogers doesn't qualify that is one and if Massington gets forced out that is another, allowing them to sign two more. I don't think anyone from years prior will help with 2013 recruits because the sanction was only sign 15 a year for three years and that started last year. It gets complicated with the PSU situation and Redd because I have read in some places that a transfer from PSU would count against their 2012 class, though I don't know if that is part of the 15 a year limit. So he could either take one of those potential two spots or he could take the spot of a walk on that had earned a scholarship. They could also potentially free up one additional spot if Jordan Simmons from last year that NDinLA said has a serious injury also loses his scholarship.

Maybe one of the USC members like me9rob can help us out.

They're fine right now, as they are completely full with yesterday's commit. Goodman didn't commit yet like they had thought he would (his mom wants him to take his OVs so he can see other schools out there), so they are full at 18.

Now, they are assuming Rodgers won't qualify, so they are good to take 19, as long as they get 4 EE's (looks like they will). Before you go tripping out, it means they took a paltry class last year (14), and will take a paltry class next year (14, because of Silas Redd).

Trust me, they will feel the effects of these sanctions. Think about that - 14 player classes sandwiching a 19 player class. Those are Ty #'s. Yes, the athletes are better, but they will miss on some (everyone does) and they will get injuries (everyone does) and they will get an academic casualty or an arrest or something. That's when these sanctions will really hurt them.

Simmons is already a Trogan, so there's no taking away his scholly. He'll be good to go, just probably not this year. That was expected though, as he would have most likely redshirted anyway. Where it will hurt is in practice, where he can't be on the scout team, and you're having to pull another walk-on to go against the 1st team D, and that gets no one better. It's also one less person t give reps to while the starters need a blow in practice. It's a major trickle-down effect.

Tell me ND, if the talent is really that good, won't some of these players be ready for the NFL early. If I were a great player and I had a hurtfest at college, three hour marathon practices, short rosters, everybody aiming for me, etc., I would think about leaving early for the NFL, wouldn't you?

Good point, and that could hurt too. But not everyone is a star in college, so I can see a couple going pro, but not like 5 or 6.

Of course, you described Barkley and TJ McDonald, and neither of them went pro, b/c they knew they had a shot at a NC. Everyone is wired differently...

Daniel Ruetigger tends to disagree.

Thinking to myself that if they keep pulling in these star counts, the sanctions will not have near the impact it has on other schools. Less players, so what. The underclassmen get more reps, and mature earlier (most are more mature and CFB ready than most incoming anyway). Honestly, unless there are major injury or academic issues, I don't see them having any issues.

There certainly will be injuries though. It's just a question of whether the injuries will be spread out enough to avoid decimating entire position groups.

I wonder if they take that into account in recruiting by purposely recruiting versatile players, or if they are just hoping to get lucky and avoid the injury bug for a couple years. It seems to me that a guy like Nelson Agholor, who can play RB, WR and S, is an important recruit for them because he can fill in at any of those positions if they have depth problems. I don't know too much about SC's roster/incoming class, but I know there's a lot of top talent, so I assume there are other guys that can play multiple positions.

My grandpa used to have a hypothesis. He retired from industry, incredibly successful, to a 40 acre orchard and truck farm. I used to help him plant things on his farm with his 1949 Farm-all Tractor. 'Twas a beast. I used to ask him how come he would plant things so far apart. I figured pack 'em in! He said, like with anything, you had to give the seeds space. I asked him how he new how much space was right, and he replied that he didn't at first, but he went on other peoples information. I asked him how they new. He smiled and told me that was one of the five secrets of success. He told me that knowing was important with people, too.

That was when he planted one of the seeds that began my love for Notre Dame: He quoted Frank Leahy, "It is never the 11 best; but, always the best 11." That was the day I realized there were a lot of people smarter than me, but if I wanted to catch up any, I'd better start listening!

Heard on "The Herd" that Silas Redd is 80/20 leaning towards transferring to USC. Also said they could have 11 Future NFL Players on offense. Scary.

Doesn't guarantee anything, but they're going to be good. Which we all knew.

Cowherd is a HUGE USC and Kiffin homer. His opinion is only as strong as our opinion

I disagree, been listening today and felt that I heard a balanced view today. Might have been in the past but not today.

He said that they had 11 players, not starters, and in regards to Redd, all my PSU friends are saying the same thing.

True, I don't doubt any of that. USC will be interesting to watch this year. No team has a higher talent-level-per-player ratio (a stat I just made up), but with the restrictions they are under they could be totally undone by injury/behavior/academic problems.

I haven't been a regular listener for a long time, but I used to feel that even when Cowherd said stuff I didn't like or agree with at the time, he ended up being right.

Your grandfather is a very wise man.

What kind of trucks dd he grow? LOL

Kiffin may finally feel the effects of the limitations, but I have a feeling he will find a weasel way to get around them.

I think they if they stay healthy, they win the national championship this year (i cant remember if they are still in post-season ban or not).... My only question is the depth of healthy players they can maintain through the season. If the injury bug hits them, it could mean losses. It will be interesting to see how he handles practices and OTs to limit injuries and attrition, but maintain stamina and general team health.

All kinds, you would see them along side the road, brimming with produce for sale; trucks, that is. (I was 12 before I knew you could buy peaches, pears, cherrys, apples, corn on the cob, or lima beans in the store.)

despite the supposed super men that make up their starting 11, their defense is no where near what i would consider a proven championship defense... maybe they will be by the end of the year, but I doubt it. Between the offenses they will face in conference/playing us and above all, most likely having to beat Oregon twice I just don't see them playing for the national title unless everyone else loses 1-2 games across the board... I think its a hell of a lot of hype honestly.

time will tell...

I do think they had better do it this year, despite what underclass talent they have.

That is a good post. Their defense gave up a ton of points to Stanford, Oregon and both Arizona schools last year. We shall see.
