Let's just go 4-3 in 4 years. Stephon, Day, Jones, and Aaron up front.

I think the coaches are preparing for a move like that in less than 4 years. It may not be a pure 4-3, but I think they find it easier to recruit kids for a 4-3 than 3-4.

I think, going forward, this coaching staff will have options and the luxury of deciding what base defense gets the most out of the players. Unlike previous staffs that used a square peg round whole philosophy. :(

Wasn't Notre Dame in a four-man front something like 40% of the time in 2010 anyway?

There's a big difference between a base 3-4 with the Cat OLB in a 3-pt. stance, and a base 4-3. Yes, they have the same number of down linemen, but the responsibilities of the front seven are totally different.

Per his Twitter:
My top 4 is NOTRE DAME, NORTH CAROLINA, PENN STATE , AND VA TECH. all equal no order. And yes i did decommit from penn state .

Nothing new on his top 4, but not sure if it is discouraging or not him making a point to say they are all equal. Also not sure if I believe him

There's good reason for that. Recruits say that stuff all the time even when everybody knows there is a clear cut favorite.

We're probably better off if that is true*. Give our defense more flexibility to have him on the edge or kicked inside for some minutes at nose.

*Assuming he plays at Notre Dame.

Exactly. Depending on how much bigger he gets he would be a NT or SDE

The difference between a 3-4 (or as Neutered says a 5-2), and a 4-3 is the former is an odd front or gap defense. The 4-3 is an even front, or man on defense with angling and all kinds of ****. I have heard echoes from a couple sources, and I am trying to entice TurningPoint to give us a sneak peak under the hood of what the "new hybrid" defense will look like. Inquiring minds want to know.

And people in favor of not tipping our hand to the competition hope it stays under wraps for a very long time ;)

Jones Talks ND Visit

13 July Christian McCollum

PSU ND UNC VT and SYR in the game. He would like to make a decision before the season starts but mom sounds like he'll take officials.

“Coach Kelly is a good guy,” Jones said. “I didn’t really talk to him for that long, but he’s a pretty good guy. He tells me where I’d be and the possibilities. He sold the academic part very well.”

Sounds like he'll be making another unofficial visit to ND (and some others) before he goes on his officials. He also said he might not use all five. He still wants to decide before his season though. So he very well could be officially visiting ND as a committed recruit. Fingers crossed!

Two unofficials and an official to ND? That's tight.

It would be great if he made ND his last official and came for the USC game. He could commit early in the day, we crush USC, and the rest of our class would follow his lead and commit. It could be a glorious day.

He wants to commit before his season starts. If he follows through with that plan, he'll have to decide on a school before his officials. I think that's why he's planning on doing repeat unofficials.

This is one of my favorite guys. I like our chances and hope we get him. This kid seems intelligent and is an absolute monster on the field.

He may decide before the season like he is saying.....but he already "soft verballed" to PSU and took that back. I could easily see him taking his time this go-around to make completely sure that the school he commits to will be the one he is staying at.
