Money was too good.
Read this on SI, not sure if posted:
08:24 AM ET 07.31 | Should it come to pass, USC's addition of Silas Redd threatens to push the program over its limit of scholarship players. One possible solution to the problem is asking a former walk-on now on scholarship to surrender said scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year. I recently spoke to one of those candidates. ... The player said he would be "heartbroken" if it came to that because he had worked so hard to earn the scholarship. However, when the player initially received it, [Lane Kiffin] explained that it was a year-to-year deal and that the player might have to give it back if USC's roster limitations left no other recourse. Although losing his scholarship would be a source of frustration, the player said he would remain with the squad. "I love this team," he said.
Im not trying to underrate our boys buut ooffa im not feelin to hot about when we play them this year but ya never know miracles happen and players can breakout.
Just remember that it took a missnap and a couple missed calls for USC to pullaway. USC might be more hyped, but losing Kennard, Nick Perry, Kalil will have an effect if and when depth becomes an issue.
We didn't do well vs. SC last year. Not at all.
Loyalty? Where are you? I can't seem to find you these days.
In replying to a member who has USC favored to win it all (from the Penn St thread), here's my reply:
85 schollies, I'd say yes. They're down to 72 already with 3 probable season-ending injuries, and they haven't even started camp yet. That means they have to worry about injuries in practice, which means they have to ponder not tackling in practice, and that KILLED their defense 2 years ago. So for me, title contenders? Yes. Favorites? No way. I think they'll lose twice to Oregon and once to an underdog. And it's because of #'s, not skill.
Redd brings them quality depth, no doubt, but skill position is the least of their worries. It's about depth along the offensive and defensive lines, and in the LB corp. Redd doesn't help with that. He's an amazing insurance plan - non-USC fans seem to forget just how good Mighty Mouse was last year as their top RB. He friggin' killed it. He's just small, so they are worried about depth. But seriously, USC needs a DE much more than they do an extra RB.
Besides, with Redd, that's just another person they have to share the ball with...which is fine by me as far as ND is concerned b/c we'll be really good against the run, but suspect against the pass. If they feel the need to force-feed Redd the ball against ND vs throwing up jump balls and slants to Woods and Lee (top duo in the country), then I'm all for it!
As long as USC loses a couple of games (which I think they will), this is good for ND. Redd will be gone to the NFL most likely after this year. So they get one year out of him, but next year they will only be allowed to get 14 commits instead of 15, and they'll only be allowed 74 schollies instead of 75, all b/c they took Redd. So this could be a good thing for ND, b/c that 15th player they would have recruited might end up at ND, and that 75th player on their roster could have been vital for games or practices or scout team, and they lose him as well.
I just hope that Oregon gets them both times this year...

Great point. USC's lack of depth at RB has probably been exaggerated a bit.
Really? He counts against next year's numbers? That's surprising, if he comes in before camp this year. I don't understand how that works (not that I'm challenging you ... I'm willing to take your word for it).
despite the supposed super men that make up their starting 11, their defense is no where near what i would consider a proven championship defense... maybe they will be by the end of the year, but I doubt it. Between the offenses they will face in conference/playing us and above all, most likely having to beat Oregon twice I just don't see them playing for the national title unless everyone else loses 1-2 games across the board... I think its a hell of a lot of hype honestly.
time will tell...
I do think they had better do it this year, despite what underclass talent they have.
Interesting thought... ND has seen great classes 'fall apart' into good/solid classes year after year it seems and a reason often given is the lack of success during the season...
with this class they (USC) currently have... I will be interested to see what impact a couple of losses does to their class. They have no room for error here so if a couple of guys jump ship late...
anyway, just a thought.
We will see. ACamp may be on to something; he usually is.
If it happens now, absolutely... if it happens a month before signing the numbers MAY become an issue...
I had another thought, you know how Miami got caught cheating, again? What if this class isn't all recruiting prowess? Just a thought.
I am sure it isn't... anyway all this poped up b/c they basically have a finalized class...
lots can happen from then to now, the later it happens the worse it could be.
