I think Helton was gone one way or another at year's end, and the only variable is if he was given the boot during the season.
So this is medium news, IMO, because it doesn't change Helton's trajectory.
USC is under a lot of scrutiny right now on the athletic and academia side. I have to believe the new president will tread somewhat lightly. If Swann proposes Meyer he may not pass the interview given his history.
Odd timing?
Not if you're sending a statement, particularly if you want to put athletics on notice. She already made some big changes on the academic side. Smart decision to do those first. Now critics can't say she only cares about academics.
With the amount of money in athletics, look for the new AD to have more of a business background. The good ol' days of AD's being ex-jocks is pretty much over. The new AD may be a former athlete, but I think they will have a lot of experience in business at a fairly high level.
I honestly don't even think Urban would want to take on that dumpster fire.
Check out their classes over the past 4-5 years. It's a goldmine. I hate USC but they always pull talent. If Dabo went there with his coordinators, he'd win the PAC-12 every year and always be in the playoffs.
I'd argue that Dabo is already getting great talent and in the playoffs every year at Clemson, so no reason to go to USC lol. The ACC isn't exactly known for their football outside of Clemson either. USC averages better classes, but the two aren't far apart. Seems like a lateral move at best.
99% sure he wasn’t saying anything about Dabo going to USC. Just showing how much talent they have and if they had a good coach they’d be rolling through the PAC-12. I also agree. There are quite a few big time talents at QB that come through each class from California and usually there are multiple that dream of going to USC. RB is similar although they haven’t been getting them (Kendall Milton would normally be going to USC if they were a competent program). WR is probably the most talented crop of players that come out of a state each cycle and USC usually gets their pick of the litter. The biggest issue with recruiting is that there aren’t many top rated OL/DL recruits in the last few cycles for whatever reason out west and it makes the top guys super competitive recruitments. The bottom line is USC gets top tier skill position players in every cycle, they get the best QB out west almost every year, and some amazing talent on defense and they still stink. A semi-competent coach with a solid plan, good recruiting efforts, and some sort of emphasis on getting WR’s the ball would do wonders with that program. It is a sleeping giant!

Yup...they got talent in the skill spots, but are lacking in the trenches.all Urbie has to do is recruit OL and DL and USC is back. they pretty much have everything else
I would be surprised if Urban winds up at USC. Given the smoke around his last two jobs can't see the president at USC taking
that on. Suspect the new AD will reveal a lot. Much to every ones glee I think Helton is there thru 2020

Agree with the first part, not the second. New USC president's mission appears to be to clean things up after various ethical lapses. She will look like quite the hypocrite if she hires Mister Ethical Lapse himself. But if Helton doesn't win this year, they ain't keeping him. In fact, if he loses to Utah and Wash he won't even make the trip to ND.

Jack Del Rio wants the job
