A player like Davonte Neal or GAIII will definitely benefit from turf.

Some players it wouldn't make much difference, but a guy like Neal is only helped by being able to explode better on turf, and GAIII will have a bit more agility and be a bit more elusive for the same reason.

I am not sure of injury proneness between the two. I have played indoor soccer on the fake stuff and blew out my hamstring due to the ability to cut on a dime, compared to regular grass giving a little. Never got injured on real grass or on a gym floor. All in all though give me the fake stuff. More consistent and easier to move on. Felt a lot faster on the fake stuff. AND believe me, I am slower than a yugo broke down.

Did anybody else get the survey from Notre Dame about their gameday experience? It could be a sign of things to come. Among the interesting questions:

To improve the “Take A StaND” campaign, which of the following areas should be considered? (check all that apply)
  • Message board (i.e. Jumbotron)
  • Band/Music
  • Cheerleaders
  • Public Address Announcements
  • Stadium Ushers
  • More overall awareness

Please rate your level of satisfaction on the following game presentation/atmosphere elements:
  • Band
  • Canned music
  • Cheerleaders
  • On-field presentation
  • Public address announcements
  • Message board (i.e. Jumbotron)

Which of the following best describes your view of the new “Take A StaND” campaign?
  • What is it?
  • No impact
  • Good start
  • Great impact

Personally, I hate the idea of a jumbotron but the NBC timeouts are stupidly long, crush momentum, and deflate the stadium so SOMETHING has to be done during those periods to entertain the folks besides giving out awards to the William Corby Adjunct Professor of Theological Women's Studies and the South Dining Hall Flank Steak Slicer of the Month.

The ushers were a little more tolerant from my experience. The main issue stems from the type of fans (some old, some young) who would prefer to just sit and watch rather than cheer. It still blows my mind that a fellow "fan" would ask me to sit down during a game. I get tired of just standing up for 3rd down...why not stand up and yell the entire time the defense is on the field?! I'm not a Colts fan but I live in Indy. I've watched plenty of Colts games and when Manning was on the field, you could hear a pin drop. But when the defense was on the field, you couldn't hear yourself think. THAT'S what ND needs. I'm not sure I know how to make it happen. People say winning will help...it actually doesn't. I was at the Air Force blowout a couple of seasons ago. People were literally leaving early and could care less about the game. The crowd noise is amped during big games like USC, but it sickens me that "fans" can't be that way for every game. Why only cheer loud when USC is in town? Why not yell/scream/cheer for ND during every game? I don't get it.

What!? You mean the million awards for the people that 90% of the people in the stadium don't know who they are and the band playing kumbaya music hurts crowd participation during the long timeouts and halftime?!

About to start the car to drive home. I will take care of this when I get home. In a half an hour, a lot of people will get their wish.

You also have to realize that super-quick players, even if they're not falling down, aren't as quick when they don't *trust* their footing.

Sounds like either good news or the mod hammer is coming down. Can't wait to find out which!

Nope just think it's so ****ing stupid to keep acting like that **** makes any difference. Tampon wear out yet? Maybe we can have fireworks too, or holograms of leprechauns dancing in the air? I don't understand one bit what is wrong with leaving a historic stadium alone and finding better players so that we really have a chance of winning a title one day. I think it is completely moronic to talk about.

DC was given a month off for personal attacks on other posters as well as trying to skirt the profanity filter at an alarming rate in this thread, for no real reason really. I get cursing once in a while and trying to skirt the filter, but the admin has it there for a reason (they want a site that families can read without being sickened at the decline on our society LOL), and we ask that you respect it as much as possible (and I know I'll say words like **** once in a while as well, but again, we ask that you at least respect the filter somewhat).

Those who also deserved a 'warning' (per se) got it, but DC went overboard.

I know we all hate to see this bad boy thread rear its ugly head again, but technically this is the most recent thread it would fall under...and I didn't want to start a new one and be yelled at for starting a new thread on this.

THAT BEING SAID...

I have a relative who is a captain of ushers at ND football stadium and he said that he is hearing from other ushers and their connections that following spring practice...they will be installing some form of artificial turf. Please note, this is a verbal rumor so I have no link.

Thanks Jimmy! I hadn't seen anybody list this same rumor he brought up to me a few days ago and I have no place to confirm or deny it.

Thanks for once again being Jimmy-on-the-spot!

Why do so many people want a Jumbotron? Turf I understand because it actually can affect the game, but a Jumbotron doesn't at all.

Does the crowd affect a game? Does a Jumbotron affect the crowd?

I am also all in for the turf just so they keep the end zone and field as is. This jumbotron deal doesnt do anything to sharpen the on field play so I'm very indifferent. Can someone tell me the all out importance of a big tv at the stadium. Is this only for entertainment purposes or is there a productive reason for the teams performance. Hey I know lets make it like a video arcade-that'll make the older alum base very happy. The turf will help with speed the jubotron keeps the casual guy entertained-Notre Dame doesnt have many casual fans at the games do they.

Of course it doesn't! USC had a hard time snapping the ball in '05 because Leinart lost his voice, not because the stadium was loud as **** Great point, btw.

I'm all for a Jumbotron if it either gets the blue hairs cheering, or it pushes them out in favor of their descendants. Don't give me some garbage about the blue hairs having their right to enjoy the game how they want. I sit in the gold seats, I see plenty of healthy, older fans sitting because they want to and I also see the same 80 year old grandma in my front row on her feet every time the defense is on the field. If I'm ever too old to cheer, I'll just watch from home or watch it in the parking lot.

I actually say no to this.

I've been in plenty of stadiums with jumbotrons and a good PA system does more work than a jumbotron. I don't think I've ever sat in a stadium and thought, "Oh man, the screen is saying GET LOUD! with a fake noise measuring meter! I better yell now!"

The only time I imagine it being an improvement is when there is a close call on the field and it's under review. But I seriously doubt the booing actually affects the refs in that situation, since it's the guys in the booth that make the call anyway.

All in all, it would be a very small improvement, and it's not worth the unique look of the stadium IMO.

(I'm much more passionate about the actual field though. I'm all for changing the grass to turf, but PLEASE don't mess with the stripes and PLEASE don't put a logo midfield.)

Yeah, I'd rather not change the look of the field. I'm not against turf...unless keeping the grass puts other teams at a disadvantage.

I'm in favor of turf because speed.

However, I thought the grass held up pretty well this season, even after the Stanford overtime-rainy-field-storming-shenanigans. I don't recall too many players losing their footing, and the brown spots on the field were minimal.

I thought this past season the grass did fine, and wouldn't be heartbroken if turf isn't in the future.
