That's fine, but Mayo wasn't a coordinator. He was Patriots linebacker coach. Prior to that he played there for eight years.

They think just because you used to play for a franchise or college you will be a good coach. Robert Kraft hired the way many meatball fans would.
At least they are smart enough to cut their losses quickly. I think a Vrabel hire would be a home run. Guy never had a quarterback in Tennessee. If they can develop Maye, they could turn that team around quickly.

He did have Derrick Henry, though.

I think his dismissal ultimately came down to a rift between him and everyone upstairs. Vrabel is not one for bullshit. His last two seasons there were also losing seasons. He's the guy everyone wants, and it would appear that New England is going to yet again hire another former player to be their head coach. Although this one comes with some coaching experience.

As for New England, they got it wrong and were willing to admit it, sure. They're not starting over yet again and now one has to wonder what to make of Mayo's career trajectory. He played for the franchise for all that time, coached there, got hired as an HC and was fired after one year. He's 38 years old and his entire adult professional life has seen him employed by the New England Patriots in some way.

Probably has plenty of money to retire comfortably so should keep his glass half full.

He had more than that. The coup that the Titans got for their pick from the Rams was notable historically. As I recall only 2 or 3 times in history has so much draft capital been given to a team, and I also recall learning that those 2 or 3 teams all won a Superbowl within the next 5 years. I'm not saying their GM Robinson didn't make some bad trades/decisions, but its a fact that Vrabel was set up for historic success. He missed his championship window and was struggling to tread water.

I'm on record that the Titans never should have fired him, but I think Vrabel also gets looked at through rose colored glasses a bit.

Because he did such a bang up job at Bama with all their 5 stars. Boosters were ready to run him out of town after week two.
I understand ND didnt have across the board talent when he was OC then but why do people think this guy has the Midas touch?
I dont see it at all.

Bama fans are almost universally united in a “sorry, Tommy” movement after seeing how inconsistent Milroe has been this year.

What Tommy got out of Drew Pyne should honestly be the only interview material Tommy ever needs to show.

Was just going to post this. He obviously did a good job calling games around Milroe

After Week 2, all they did was win 11 games in a row including the SEC Championship. They lost to eventual champion Michigan in OT. Milroe was SEC Player of the Week twice after Week 2, three times total. 46th in rushing offense with the 11th best Red Zone Offense in the country.

People continually think he's shit. Especially on this board and in this fan base. Milroe regressed and what they did with Pyne at QB1 is a goddamned football miracle.

He went to the CFP with a QB people now say they wouldn’t want here lol

Here’s the question I would pose if you still dislike Rees, do you think a certain faction of ND fans that you belong to are smarter than a significant portion of the CFB and NFL industry? I’ve always been a Rees guy as a play-caller but even if I wasn’t, I defer to the market in thinking I am smarter than many unconnected people paid millions to make these decisions

If the sample of the NFL industry is the Bears, then yes.

Yes, I am smarter.

And Sean McVay and Kevin Stefanski, who have 3 NFL Coach of the Years between them. Supposedly Belichick was interested in having him at UNC too, though with his recent offensive hires that might be a negative...

I understand a lot of guys are pumped on Tommy. Im just not.
Payne was a 4 star QB out of high school. Threw 22 TDs vs 6 picks at ND.
Tommy didnt throw those passes. Payne did.
If Tommy took a 2 star and made him great, hats off to Tommy.
Many teams in CFB would dream of a 4 star QB. They make it happen with 2-3 stars.
Not ready to crown ole Tommy anything yet.

Pyne threw all of these passes. But 2022 was what the threw with Tommy as his OC.

It’s not just that Tommy did it with Pyne… it’s that he did it without very few viable receiving threats outside of Michael Mayer.

Everyone in the college football world knew where ND was going in “gotta have it” situations, and yet Tommy figured out how to scheme Mayer open anyway, and figured out how to help Pyne do it with as little defensive resistance as possible through proper scripting, smart use of motion, and elite playcalling setup.

If you can step back and see the full context of ND’s offense in 2022, and still come away unimpressed with Tommy, that’s wild to me.

Right? When you consider that Parker got the same offense that Tommy basically ran the previous year (Minus Mayer, but big upgrade at QB from Pyne to Hartman and more receiver depth), plus the extra experience that OL, Estime, etc had...and Parker basically whiffed? It's a credit to the magic lemonade Tommy was able to make with Pyne's lemons. Despite being more experienced and with Hartman at QB we had the same outcome against Ohio State that we had the previous year...and we were at home for that 2nd game. Yeah, Parker blew out a bunch of crummy defenses, anybody can do that when you have a major talent advantage.

It's unfathomable that Rees was able to work around Pyne's limitations and beat Clemson in 2022, and then Parker goes and loses to a more inferior Clemson team the next year with Hartman.

Not sure what his sources are but Prister believes that Vrabel will hire Rees as his OC
Boston Globe had Rees on their shortlist for Pats OC today as well. It would be a better move for him than Cleveland for sure.

How many more chances is Josh McDaniels going to get? He's another Belichick underling that has not accomplished much when he wasn't hitched to Tom Brady's wagon.

Byron Leftwich still hasn't been given another opportunity. I'm sure there are others out there in the same situation.

Honestly, what am I missing?
