I think Kevin has always called the plays as the Browns head coach. He started this year calling plays and at some point transitioned that to Dorsey, and then ended up firing him. I could see why he would want to keep calling the plays.

Last in points per game and 5th from bottom in yards per game... by all means keep the play calling, you're doing great.

I get that this is how things go, but .... Tommy is a really really good OC and play-caller.

Imagine if he doesn't get a great (independent) DC, AND gives play-calling to his OC? What a waste that would be.

Tommy be smart! Nothing without a great DC and keep the play-calling job (somehow now on the sidelines not the booth.)

.... whole business feels wrong to me.

Tommy is such a psychopath competitor I don’t think he would take a “fail job”. He’s not at that point in his career. If he returned to college it would be a job he can really win at. Current landscape, would take like the Tulane job when it opens this off-season before UCLA.

Could be splitting hairs here, but he did take the Browns job.

I don’t mean he would never work somewhere with a losing record. Returning to CFB to spend 25 hours a day/8 days a week coaching and recruiting just to take a check when they fire you is the reality of a job like UCLA. Being in the NFL as a passing game coordinator is very different quality of life.

Yeah, I can't see him taking the UCLA job if he's smart. UCLA could occasionally be okay when it was the PAC-12. It's going to be impossible to be an elite team in the B1G, they're going to get pushed around a lot. Whoever takes that job is screwed career wise more than likely There's a good reason Chip Kelly got out and took the OC job at OSU.

Go, Tommy! Do your strange magic. My brother-in-law needs some wins for his Browns (he's rooted for them literally since Otto Graham.)

He isn't a bad play caller. He's actually perfect for the NFL. Tries to be the smartest guy in the room on every play and doesn't stick to what works. Problem is there's little to nothing that works for the Browns so he'll prolly not have that problem.

Hoping for the best for Rees.

Notre Dame
2020 Ian Book (10-2; loss to eventual national champ, Tide in semi finals)
2021 Jack Coan (11-2)
2022 Buchner/Pyne (9-4; Freeman's first year)
Alabama
2023 Milroe/Buchner (12-2)
Browns
2025 Gabriel/Flacco

Dude hasn't really had a stud QB outside of maybe Book. I think he's always had a great offensive mind; just never had the QB or the supporting skill set stars to produce. Instead, he was stuck with Drew "Do your fucking job" Pyne.

I don’t think there’s a ceiling on his NFL playcalling upside, do you?
I assume there’s a ceiling to everybody. I just find the Tommy Rees discussion fascinating on this site. Nobody elicits a bigger range of opinions than Tommy. On one end he’s a nepo baby failure and on the other he’s the love child of Bill Walsh and Andy Reid. I hope he does great.

That is fair. I think he’s got as good of a football mind & pedigree as anyone and in the right situation no reason he can’t be one of the greats 🤷🏻‍♂️ Not saying it’s a foregone conclusion he will. Also think his ceiling in the NFL is higher than that in the college game.

I think he's a good enough playercall and I always felt he seemed better suited to the NFL than the college game because his recruiting at times was pretty rough and he seemed more drawn to pure scheming and playcalling.

If he ever becomes head coach of Notre Dame, I'm going dark forever.

I'm talking erase myself from existence and head to Canada as a refugee. I want no part of associating with any of it.

The pant pissing will flood the Internet in ways none of us can fully fathom.

Todd Monken supposedly wanted the job after 2019. So glad BK went lazy and hired the wonder boy

Not something we have to worry about anymore, thankfully.

That hire changes the trajectory of things in multiple ways. Highly likely may not be sitting here with Marcus Freeman as head coach.

I don't get the Tommy hatred about as much as I don't get the man love for Brian Hartline. Probably more so.
