What tea leaves did you get that from?
Comments from insiders here about TR and MF not seeing eye to eye.

Comments from II that Tommy felt like he deserved more of an opportunity to be head coach over Freeman.

Comments from Mike Frank about tension between MF and TR last season.

It points to two young, aggressive coaches attempting to establish themselves as the alpha. MF was the alpha and Tommy wanted to be.

Freeman was the right person for the HC position over Rees especially, but if Freeman and TR really had that big of an issue, freeman and ND would have been WAYYYYYY more prepared for him leaving. Just like Jack was NOT prepared for Kelly to leave.

That sounds like Tommy’s dad talking.

I’ve always been a Rees fan but I don’t know how anyone could look objectively at the situation in Dec. 2021 and think they should’ve made Rees the head coach over Freeman. Rees may well have a better football mind but from a personality/face of the program and recruiting perspective it’s not even close.

And while I’m sure they had their philosophical differences, Tommy also did the program, and Freeman, a massive solid by staying here when he did. But, like Freeman, Rees is young, smart and ambitious and moving on at some point was probably inevitable, even healthy.

Freeman (and Swarbrick) should have been better prepared when he did.

So. Just to get everyone foaming at the mouth --- Alabama sweeps out, including Georgia in the SEC championship; then wins another NCAA championship, and Tommy rolls to stardom. ... is anyone REALLY sure that this is not going to happen?

Quietly and consistently getting better every week and Milroe with a double hat trick today both on the ground and in the air. Tommy looking like he made a great career move about now...

I don't disagree with the overall point you're making - college football is often driven by the quarterback's performance and their qb situation looks like shit. I'm just adding a bit of perspective here - a team with 18 five stars and shitload of high 4 stars can absolutely compensate for limitations at the QB position. I won't be the least bit surprised if this team rips off 10 straight wins and ends up in the SEC title game. I guess we'll see

No. They can definitely win it this year.

Looking at Bama’s recruiting classes the last 4 years it should happen. They have been better than Georgia’s and everyone else’s.

Could you imagine though? A scrappy underdog like Alabama winning it all this year? It would be insane!!!

Other superstar OC to win a natty at Bama under Saban

Central Michigan coach Jim McElwain
Chargers QB coach Doug Nussmeier
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian
Giants coach Brian Daboll/Maryland coach Mike Locksley

Tommy, Milroe, and that entire offense in general have come a LONG way since September and figured out who they are and how to work together. I'll admit that I wasn't thrilled with hiring Tommy and after the Texas game, I was ready for him to start looking for his next job, but I was wrong. He's figured it out and is doing a good job. Whether he can dial up a game to beat Georgia next month remains to be seen, but I'm happy with his improvement from September until now.

Tommy did an excellent job in adjusting his offense to the talents of his QB. That’s the key in CFB.

Look at KJ Jefferson at UA. He had some preseason Heisman hype & looked to be an NFL prospect. Problem was they had a pro-style OC who was trying to plug a square peg into a circle. End result: he got fired & KJ will be lucky to be drafted as a QB

Look at Sam Hartman at ND. OC misread the room.

I’m sure there’s other situations especially when it comes to transfer QB.

Here's a fun question:

Let's assume for a moment that an occurrence of events leads to Rees being hired as HC here. Who does he hire as OC?

When I first came to this site I thought I was in bizzaro world with how many people hate Tommy here. Nice to see people start to come around on him.

Too bad Saban knew what I knew. Tommy is elite
People have hated Tommy since he time as a player. Always struck me funny that people were more hateful of a guy playing above his status as oppose to the players that failed to live up to theirs and wound up on the bench. If the later lived up to their potential, Rees never sees the field.

Tommy spent damn near 10 years at ND between a player and a coach, which was 1/3 of his entire life. On top of that, he really, really knows ball. Didn’t deserve near the hate he got.

I'm curious to see what TR does against UGA. They are a different animal and I expect them to do the same thing to Bama that they did to Ole Miss. UGA by 10+ ALL DAY

Biggest mistake Rees ever made was taking Buchner over McCarthy after evaluating both in person. I think he was a bad recruiter/talent evaluator but a very good OC in many different respects.
I'll one up that...... Then doubling down on buchner heading into the 2022 season. I think he did OK covering up for his biggest mistakes.

To play devil's advocate, we didn't get the Buchner who committed to ND. We got a version who missed an entire season of football to COVID and tinkered with his throwing motion in the interim. While I'm sure McCarthy would have been the much better choice no matter what, you have to wonder what could have been if Buchner was busier playing football as a senior instead of tinkering with something that already worked...

I still think BK had a hand in which QBs we were going after while he was here. You look at some of the low hanging fruit we took as far as Clark and Pyne, and then as soon as BK bolts in the span of 6 months we're going after Moore, then Rees lands Carr, steals Minchey, and gets Hartman to transfer.
