Tommy Rees - Offensive Coordinator

I think Rees will be fine, not concerned about him. I'm more interested in Mr. Taylor. Anyone have any inkling about the style of running game he prefers? I'd love to see us go back to being a road grading style run game given the size we have up front.

I’m fine with Tommy. Would’ve been jazzed about Moorhead but sometimes these things don’t work out. Don’t know enough about Monken or Morris to have much opinion.

But one thing I’ve been wondering is how Penn State quickly hired away Minnesota’s OC and were we ever in the mix there? They ran a very good offense and he’d seem like the sort we could have landed. Anyone have any idea?

I don't but I also don't think it was a coincidence that Long leaves and we come out with some under center/I-formation plays for Tony as it's clearly better suited for his game.

To that, I think, this is more about creating an environment within the offensive staff that isn't going to be stuck with one scheme or philosophy. Quite honestly, I thought we should've been doing a lot more of that earlier in the year.

If a guy was a big time OC in the past, there had a to be SOME reason he would be looking for a job now correct? So it isnt like people just leave top tier successful programs that they have running on all cylinders on a whim.

BVG had tons of experience and everyone was excited. Look how that turned out.

Well said. And, I think this has a lot to do with it. I don't think the offense is going to start the 2020 season and look dramatically different but I do think throughout the season there will be a willingness to be more multiple like we were in the bowl game. Whether that works or not remains to be seen but I like the idea.

I have read a lot of comments for and against Tommy as the OC. And, from an outsider's opinion, I can see both sides. There is high risk/high reward in all of it. However, if I am going to take that chance I would take it with one of my own than with someone else. You gotta dance with the one you brung... so get behind the hire and get busy getting busy Irish fans.

That's why he has position group coaches. They will more than likely be the leads on the players they are recruiting. I would suspect that Rees' primary objective at that point is to seal the deal. And the way he recruited his position group, I would like my chances of him being able to seal the deal with recruits that will comprise his offense.

Yea, I think Tremble is a perfect H-back type guy. Potentially Brock as well. Tremble has blocked really well as a lead back and of course is really athletic and able to catch the ball.

I think he could be an absolute X-factor in that type of a position and I would love to see our offense evolve into one that incorporates an H-back type of role more.

Well said. And, I think this has a lot to do with it. I don't think the offense is going to start the 2020 season and look dramatically different but I do think throughout the season there will be a willingness to be more multiple like we were in the bowl game. Going under center not only improves the chances of converting that 3rd & 1, but it also opens the playbook to more play action plays. Utilizing the RPO plays as well as going under center will keep defenses from getting in the right defensive alignment and/or personnel at times

You're right, except for more deep throws, we won't see a remarkable change early on. The changes will be phased in over time.

This will be a very good recruiting tool.

I'm only "worried" because we apparently went hard after Morris and Moorhead (per Lax's post). If Rees was/is the guy, I would have preferred him to have been Kelly's target from the start. Also makes me wonder why a proven guy didn't want to come here. Money? Control? Something else? Heck, it seemed like Rees calling plays in the bowl game wasn't a slam dunk and Kelly took awhile to make the decision. Now he's the OC. Maybe that's all idle speculation. Who knows. We'll find out eventually. In the meantime, yes go recruit. Hard.

I think it was in the OC search thread where I detailed why I thought someone like Moorhead would find Oregon more appealing to ND. Look where their past OC's have moved on to and where ours have. Add in the other factors and it might just not been a fit. Which is probably why it never went past a couple phone calls.

Bernie Parmalee! Coached Anthony Fasano, John Carlson, Kyle Rudolph, and one year for Tyler Eifert (He was so good he only needed a year to mold him). Basically all of our big time TEs. Currently RB coach for the Falcons.

I don't know who all was involved in his recruitment but there was an article out recently that said he extended the offer to Jordan Johnson. That's encouraging.
