The Optimal Notre Dame Scheduling Model

That plus expanded B1G/SEC could make it harder for us as an independent to schedule that annual marquee home-and-home game too. Why would Ohio State or A&M play us when they’ll have more tough conference games and losing one to us could knock them out of the top 12?

With all due respect -

1. Why would said teams not think ND is as tough on their schedule as their conference foes?
2. Why end 'Great Game Match-Ups'.. i.e., Top Tier teams?
3. B1G/SEC are ALWAYS wanting to be on a Big Stage on National TV... so why not play the Irish?

to add.... A LOT of naysayers had WV beating ND in '88... I know I'm showing my age but - I was there in '73 - '78 when ND was two (should have been three) NCs and they were playing the best... freaking Army was a powerhouse then. If you’re a power and only play one or two other powers in your conference schedule, adding Notre Dame feels like a fun chance to add another big win for your CFP resume as an insurance policy if you don’t win the conference.

If you’re a power and you’re playing, say, three other powers in your conference schedule (bc the B1G and SEC have more big powers now), adding Notre Dame might seem like a risk you lose a third game and miss the 12-team playoff.

Or maybe not. It will depend on many things. But if the name of the game is “go 10-2” some schools will say why risk a loss when you don’t have to?

But looking forward, after playing Ohio State and 11 dwarfs this year, Michigan next year has Ohio State, Washington, Oregon and USC in-conference. (Also Texas but that was presumably scheduled before the Big 10 expanded.) Washington plays Michigan, USC, Penn State and Oregon.

With schedules like that, what's the incentive to add another nonconference opponent who can beat you?

That's true, I was only considering the outcome on the field and not necessarily the financials. They should just count it as an ACC game, makes sense.

I brought that up in the General Team thread. There's been some talk out of USC's camp about possibly dropping us (Probably because the B1G is kicking their ass). Would suck to lose the USC rivalry, but the players would enjoy the annual trip to California at the end of the year regardless.

Now that Cal and Stanford are both in the ACC...I wonder if we don't get the ACC to add a provision where we play one or the other as our last game in November and it's an Away game? If we did that I guess that would guarantee us a Home game against the other, but maybe that would screw with ACC scheduling too much. Maybe the Home game would have to be against another ACC team?

They need to just get rid of the conference championship games. Give their conferences some accountability in crowing their champion their own “BCS” way. Then you get rid of the automatic 4 bid & rely solely on the playoff committee to promote those spots.

College football games being played on college campuses? That's an interesting idea.

The greedy pigs in charge are too dumb to understand that it would be better for the sport and maybe it could generate more money for them in the future.

I know I said this a few times in the past so sorry for beating a dead horse. I would love to see us do a annual game against a Texas team. Rotate between TexasAM, UT and Baylor (Catholics verses heretics for that one). Throw an occasional game in against Texas tech/smu/houston

Build Rockne's vision for California in Texas. Athletes are better there, untapped potential where we don't have as much brand awareness, there are actually a ton a Catholics in Texas

The only argument against this would be that giving a team home field in the playoffs is a huge advantage that would be determined by the committee, unlike in the nfl or other sports where it is determined by definitive win/loss records. Would that impact how the committee ranks teams? It could get hairy.
