Yes he could. Four planets were visible during the totality. Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Venus. If he was looking at the eclipse itself its likely he saw Mars and Mercury.

Damned if I know which two planets they were but I could sure see them.

Someone at work had the glasses. By the time they got to me it was at probably 50% covered. Cool stuff. Space is neat. Fargo gets a total eclipse in the 2090's, hope I make it. That will put me around 100.

Just got home. Going up was a piece of cake. A little over 3 hours. Coming home ... was like a football game or concert. Both 75 and 11 were choked before they both had accidents.

I was surprised at 94% it really didn't get very dark - noticeably less hot but not as pronounced as I thought it would be. Apparently local traffic signs were advising people to use headlights during the eclipse - freaking joke, could have easily gone about your business without realizing anything was going on.

Shadows where cool and weird looking but overall best part of the day was the geeked out astronomers on TV who acted like they hadn't talked to a human since the last eclipse (oh wait).

Was pretty awesome here. A great way to spend a few hours with my son and about 500 middle school kids. I was more amazed by it all then I thought I would be.

A friend and I headed from the Bay Area up to central Oregon to see it. Absolutely the most incredible thing I've ever seen. Couldn't believe how little traffic there was on the way up. The return trip would normally be about 10 hours, but with traffic it took us 11 hours to get back... to California (the state line that is). We got home at 4:30am this morning.

Worst traffic I've ever seen.

That being said, I would've gladly sat in traffic for another 11 hours or more just to see that. Absolutely awe inspiring and not enough superlatives to describe it!

saw about 70% totality up here in NY, it was cool, but i'm having a hard time understanding how some think this thing was sooo amazing.
saw a massive hourlong lightning storm over the ocean in Carolina once, now that was a sight to see.
maybe seeing the eclipse 100% totality was only way to go?

To me, the totality thing is what made it awesome.

I was only going to maybe go check it out for a few minutes, but finally decided to attend a viewing party with a bunch of people in a giant yard.

Now I can't believe that I might've missed out on it. It's true, being in totality was life changing. The total beauty and power of nature were both experienced for a short time.

Totality makes all the difference. The light started turning an eerie grey, then like sundown and then dark. Bugs started chirping. The stars came out. The kids were all screaming (with joy). To see the corona affect, the wedding ring effect and the shadows all start waving like snakes just before and after was really freaky.

Obviously pictures don't do it all justice, but that was our view.
