Newberg (Scout analyst) just posted at II. ND is all over Jones. His dad has a very long and very positive history with Denbrock (way way back). Thinks he makes it in for Junior Day and will be offered. He even titled the thread "Future commit?"

Both Tony Jr. and Sr. said there is a chance he commits on his visit if he likes it. Per Loy. They are unsure if we are taking 1 or 2 RB's this cycle. Apparently the staff is split on that topic.

His father was coached by Denbrock in college and then again in the arena league so there is definitely a familiarity here that seems to be working in our favor.

Also, he's done very well in two camp settings now. The Orlando NFTC and the Adidas Georgia camp. So for a bigger back to do well in those settings, I'd say is a pretty solid start.

Jamie Newberg mentioned the commitment as well

Natrone Means was extremely impressed with Jones and I put more stock into that vs any of the "ranking" experts out there. He knows the position and he knows the game.

Jones also still has family in Chicago. His father grew up with kids in neighborhood that landed at Notre Dame for football too.

Notre Dame and Autry Denson have been on the ball in this recruitment and Jones is only going to keep moving up the rankings as the camp circuits continues.

He played in a baseball game tonight and then hit the road for the Rivals football camp tomorrow. I fully expect his Rivals ranking to take a jump after attending their camp.

I was more asking how does an IMG kid fly under the radar? Kid looks like a thicker Folston.

They rotated in 3 different RB's last year so he didn't get as many carries as you'd expect from a #1 back. He was very very productive with those but I'm assuming that's part of the reason.

He originally attended St. Petersburg Catholic, the same school that has produced Dillon and Reilly Gibbons. As a freshman and sophomore, he was on the field almost every play, including special teams.

The move to IMG Academy last year was so his body wouldnt get beaten down and he would be fresher for college.

He had less than 70 carries last year, but also had an average rush of 11.7 yards.

So he isnt getting the work that he would have got at St. Petersburg Catholic, but he is using his carries to the fullest and getting production.

HS running backs are afraid of getting too many carries now so they will be fresher when they get to the NFL??

No, its not that. But, say he carried the ball an average of 250times a year for four years of high school because he is the best player on the team. That's 1000 carries. Add the fact Jones started at Linebacker and played all Special teams, thats easily going to put a ton of wear and tear over just four years of high school.

IMG he had like 66 carries last fall. If he 100-150 carries this fall, thats not even the amount of carries he would have received in one year at his old school.

He also is one of the top baseball players in Florida. Baseball isnt so much of a contact sport, but you can easily get worn out with so many games.

It's just about not wearing his body down completely before he arrives to college. It's not so much that he has concerned about the NFL, but a body only has so many hits in it. If you can avoid some of that, then what harm is that? I dont think if he had 250 carries for 2000 yards and 30 TDs at his old school vs what he does at IMG against a national schedule has any impact on his recruitment.

Lets be honest, the rankings are based of going to certains services camps and not so much based on actual play on the field.

Notre Dame has done a great job of finding guys that can play at a high level and this goes to Denson knowing the talent in Florida before the camp circuits. I mean Jones already rose up in 247's rankings based off a camp last weekend.

With Autry & Sanford onboard, I wonder if the staff reincorporates fullbacks into the running game. Luatua could perform that roll in the interim, and someone like Tony could potentially bulk up to play at 235+ at the college level. Half his junior tape is him laying blocks, which is great to see regardless.

Just a thought.

I don't think the coaching staff will change the fact that fullbacks are antiques and the game has moved to incorporating an H-back for the best of both spread and power.
