Michigan will only have about 80% eclipse but I'll still be watching. I probably won't stare at the thing the whole entire time, probably a couple of seconds, so is this worth buying glasses for? Haven't seen anything cheaper than $30 on Amazon and the NASA site doesn't give any detailed info on where the free ones are actually at.

Swing by a Rural King, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Harbor Freight or Amazon online and pick up some welding goggles or just a shield/filter plate/replacement lens with a #14 shaded lens. All kinds of options for under $10.

Example:

Solar eclipse presents first major test of power grid in renewable era | Reuters

Solar eclipse presents first major test of power grid in renewable era
Ruthy Munoz

HOUSTON (Reuters) - As Monday's total solar eclipse sweeps from Oregon to South Carolina, U.S. electric power and grid operators will be glued to their monitoring systems in what for them represents the biggest test of the renewable energy era.

Utilities and grid operators have been planning for the event for years, calculating the timing and drop in output from solar, running simulations of the potential impact on demand, and lining up standby power sources. It promises a critical test of their ability to manage a sizeable swing in renewable power.

Solar energy now accounts for more than 42,600 megawatts (MW), about 5 percent of the U.S.'s peak demand, up from 5 MW in 2000, according to the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), a group formed to improve the nation's power system in the wake of a 1964 blackout. When the next eclipse comes to the United States in 2024, solar will account for 14 percent of the nation's power, estimates NERC.

For utilities and solar farms, the eclipse represents an opportunity to see how well prepared their systems are to respond to rapid swings in an era where variable energy sources such as solar and wind are climbing in scale and importance.

Power companies view Monday's event as a "test bed" on how power systems can manage a major change in supply, said John Moura, director of reliability assessment and system analysis at the North American Electric Reliability Corp.

"It has been tested before, just not at this magnitude," adds Steven Greenlee, a spokesman for the California Independent System Operator (CISO), which controls routing power in the nation's most populous state.

Schools here have had a huge deal arranged for teh eclipse time, including protective eyeware for every student in the county. I am taking lunch to witness this event with my 11-year old and am pretty excited about it myself. Even got a meeting my boss told me she needed me on for that EXACT HOUR and I told her to forget it. This s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I'm not missing it.

Mount Juliet gets to experience it for 2:37.

I'm not taking off work like I thought I would, because the eclipse is coming my way in seven years.

Was just about to mention this if someone else already had not. I live in Indy. Expected to be 91% coverage. Seven years, Indy is on the path for a total solar eclipse. The media is eating this up right now and most, from what I'm seeing/hearing, are barely touching on the fact that this is going to happen again (and be better locally) in less than ten years.

We're driving up in the wee hours of the 21st from Birmingham. Supposed to connect with friends that moved to Cleveland a few months ago and drive to Athens. I wanted to make hotel reservations months ago but wife and sister-in-law wouldn't go for that. I've got the feeling that if Tennessee isn't closed by the time we hit the stateline, State highway 11 to Athens is gonna look like the roads around Woodstock almost 50 years ago. No where to park and single lane of traffic moving in one direction at Los Angeles rush hour speed. Then a couple of hours later moving at the same snail's pace in the other direction.

Rock, we saw the friends, that live in Cleveland, down here last weekend. They mentioned that their 6 year olds school was closed for the day.

I've been to Chattanoga a number of times over the years actually Dunlap. My wife used to hang glide in the Sequatchie Valley many, many years ago. I've 75 to K'ville but not familiar with state roads.

Do you have an estimate of travel time from Chattanoga to Cleveland? And Cleveland to Athens?

Came thru Tennessee n the way back from FL early last week. Electronic signs on the highway telling people not to stop on the highway during the eclipse.

Personally, I think this is the start of the Zombie Apocalypse. While everyone has their eye in the sky, the zombies are going to strike. Don't fall for this ruse.

This has potential to be an unmitigated disaster. This interchange at 26/95 is awful at the best of times. During Christmas and Thanksgiving it can be backed up for 30-40 miles for many hours.

Its very "partly cloudy" here so not sure how well I will get to view. :(

...my family went to our place in WY, said it rocked...

Was clear in Northern Utah...The temperature dropped markedly here, which was awesome. Did the pinhole thing and took a pic to show the kids how we old school folks did it....:).

Got dimmer here (near ND), but not dark. Pin hole projector worked well.

Thank goodness this proves the flat earth theory once and for all

Not a cloud in the sky where I was. Could easily see the two planets. Amazing.
