I think joining the Big Ten gets them closer to a National Championship. They've been Independent forever and haven't won one since 1988. The sniffs they've had since have been few and far between, and the vast majority were under Lou right after and Brian Kelly. Think about all that's changed since just Brian Kelly leaving ND.

If it's time, it's time. This move certainly makes it feel like it's time.

To be fair “this move” is just talks thus far but I agree.

Also I think joining the Big Ten - especially if there's an annual SEC-B1G Challenge matchup - just gets Notre Dame a more interesting and fun schedule than this parade of blah ACC teams and service academies and MAC schools we're playing now. Look at our schedule this year. We have like two games that anyone outside our fan base even mildly cares about. While USC-Michigan and Oregon-Ohio State are must-see TV.

And most of the Big Ten schools - even if they're not great at it - care about football in a way that Wake and Duke and Ga. Tech simply don't. Playing Iowa or Wisconsin or Penn State is fun. There's a lot of geographical overlap with our student body, which generates a lively degree of hate. We keep USC and get new west coast rivals too. The ACC has Clemson and Florida State, yeah, and Miami as a hated historical rival. The rest of them, whatever.

The Big Ten is the move.

Between the two I'd rather ND join the SEC for recruiting purposes and I think that's where the bigger money is, but realistically most of ND's traditional rivals are now under the B1G umbrella so that's probably where they'd end up.

They need a big college football team in New York city. What school did Venkman go to?
NY's football team is ND if we are being completely honest. No one cares about Rutgers or Syracuse.

BIL's fam is all NY. They passively root for ND

Yeah. New York is literally where the term "subway alum" comes from, and they're still there. They're not getting any younger though.

Those subway fans who were rooting for Rockne's and Leahy's teams have probably gone to the End Zone in the sky. Everyone's fanbase gets older and reloaded. That's where our job of grooming the kids and grandkids to be ND fans comes into play.

In a recent acquisition, the architects of Project Rudy successfully recruited to join their team one of the most respected people within the college space: former Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick. It is a stunning move for someone who just six months ago sat on the College Football Playoff governing committee as one of the most powerful decision-makers in the industry.
Of course.

Well yeah of course. I was mostly referring to my Irish Catholic suburban New York cousins who grew up watching Notre Dame in the 80s, with their parents who grew up watching us in the 60s. They're still showing up to watch us play Army and Navy, I suppose, but not sure their kids much care.

my impression is the children of Subway alumni are not ND fans, or very casual. As in 2nd or third fav team. Unless they went to ND, of course.

McMurphy has been projecting ND out of the CFP since NIU loss but wondering if even at 12-0 it was going to be challenging with this season's lackluster opponents. Maybe it's time to join a conference for guaranteed dog fights on the schedule.

Maybe we should just schedule better games?

1. McMurphy is a troll

2. He projects based on right now, not future conditions.

3. wgaf, he ain't the committee, who also projects based on right now.

The thing with joining a conference you are guaranteed "good games" because someone in your conference will always be up and someone in your conference will always be down. And you get a conference championship game.

Playing independent you run the risk of things like Florida State and USC crapping their pants. Nothing you can really do about that, you schedule games years in advance and those are historically good opponents. This year, only Clemson and Miami have their shit together in the ACC (and with Miami that's only because they're being protected by the refs).

This is 100% true. Grandpa and Dad pointed it out to me at an early age. If you're an ND fan, this is what you could potentially get. You never know what is going to happen down the line.

More than anything, the variable of being able to prepare and scout your opponents (film) is a bit more difficult versus knowing you're going to get conference opponents year in and year out.

As long as ND is independent, though, you have to assume that at some point somebody like SC or FSU could be dog meat or potentially be a contender.

I sort of agree, but not entirely. ND schedules a pretty solid slate of opponents every year, including a handful of typically tough opponents like USC, OSU, and so on. That would be similar to Bama or Georgia with an SEC schedule that includes about the same number of tough teams like LSU, Florida, and such. I don't think your 6 or 7 major opponents are much more likely to have off years than ours.

Wondering tho’ (don’t know) if it will be more difficult for an Indy ND to schedule tough non-ACC games in a new super-conference world?
