Wimbush has prioritized football to a greater degree than he has yet.

He clearly knows that he needs to do more than show up on gameday. He's doing everything he can to develop.

Good to know our starting QB who was one of the worst in college football wasn’t all in last year. That’s always nice to hear.

He was "all in" last year and showed great leadership in the offseason which was a primary driver behind team cohesion and why we started the year off so well. This story is a twist on classic "best shape of my life" nonsense you hear from every school after a S&C coach change. I can't believe anyone takes it at face value. The only thing I see being different is Wimbush focusing on his mechanics as a passer above all else given that he'll be in a QB competition.

movies, strobe lights, and music? Lame.

These coaches need to tune the players up with some good old drill sgt techniques like in your face ass chewings and hard core challenges. That will give them an idea of fight or flight.

I don't think this old school mindset holds water anymore. Introducing distractions with ties to previous shortcomings makes a ton of sense. Training the players to focus on what they can control regardless of what's going on outside the objective is exactly what we needed more of mentally last year, but we aren't in a place where everyone needs to be torn down and rebuilt. I'm a fan of these S&C changes, especially after the gains we saw last year.

As for the drill sergeant mentality, it only makes sense to the extent you can tie it to the objective. BVG did plenty of yelling and being a dick, but that didn't make us competent. Just lighting up a person for messing up and setting a hardcore challenge does nothing to spur growth and development in a player or professional if they don't give a shit about the objective. So show them the turnover chain, the smoke and all the BS at Miami that got them all so turned around. Drill into them that they control the outcome and have support to stay locked into the objective. Then put them in positions where they can succeed incrementally. That's how you make correct behaviors second nature.

As for the fight or flight thing, that's a technical pet peeve of mine and no knock on you, but it doesn't make sense in this context unless you want everyone to run.

Punter as a captain.

One of the things that has continued is electing people who have minimal impact on the game as captains.

Classic battered Notre Dame fan response...

I like the pick. I think it further reinforces that you must win in all three phases of the game and that those who pay attention to detail and help put the team in positions to win will be recognized and their efforts acknowledged.

I don't think being a game changer automatically makes you captain material. Tyler has shown numerous times that he is an asset in the locker room, the coaches/players like to be around him, and his personality lightens up the room. Also, most importantly (especially after the last few years), you never hear about him in a negative way on the news *knocks on wood*

Plus, Kelly has always had at least 1 captain from offense, defense, and special teams; looking at the special teams unit, he's as deserving as anyone.

I've no problem with Newsome as a captain, but when only have three captains, and two of them are a punter and your center, you worry a bit about who's going to take charge on the field (no knock on Mustipher, but OLs are kind of a different breed).
I'd be curious to know why not Tillery or Coney. Or, hell, Dex Williams.

Tillery is too inconsistent for me and didn't really mature until just last year. Coney and Dex? They're both good players but if you went to jail during your time at Notre Dame, you should never be in consideration for captaincy.

I think he's drilling harder on specific parts of his passing game (i.e. footwork, mechanics for screens/touch passes, etc.) whereas last year he was "big picture" about leading the offense and being a playmaker. I know for a fact that he spent free time last offseason doing passing with WRs and such. I think this year he's probably just focusing on his own game more now that he has a whole season of live game film showing his biggest weaknesses... some of this is on the coaching last year not identifying those problems in the offseason and working on them then.

Don't forget, this team usually has between 5-7 captains.

I bet two or three more get named at the end of spring or at some point during Fall camp.

Right now, you've got three captains, one for each unit, to lead during Spring. The other guys will have to earn it, would be my guess. That would jive with Kelly's comments on a guy like Tillery, who he challenged to return to ND so he could develop as both a football player and a leader.

BK said there will be three and then possibly one more

To your point, that could change too

I think you give your captaincies to the men who give the largest effort in the locker room and on the practice field (and to a lesser extent - balancing school and football). They are the ones who the coaching staff can point to as "doing it the right way" on and off the field.

Coney and Williams? Really. Better than Stepherson I suppose

If I added another captain it would be Julian Love
