I'll echo what some are saying:

Cincinnati is a much better job if you want to jump to a better program. If you want to maybe be somewhere 10-15 years and build a program I guess I would rather go to Purdue.

I'm a homer, but I still don't even know if that's a good reason, unless you have an existing connection to the program.

At Purdue, you're always gonna be competing with the B1G East... scUM, pOSU, and Sparty. That's in addition to competing with Whisky and Iowa in your own division. So if you're going to build a program over 10-15 years, you might have four years where you could legitimately win the B1G, if you're lucky. That's a lot of work to climb that hill for a potentially low return. So it only makes sense if you're a Purdue legacy or in it just for the paycheck.

Otherwise, I'd stay at Cincy for 15 years, win the AAC and compete for the Group of 5 spot in NY6 every two years, and build the Ohio Valley Boise State.

I think there is something to be said for being in a major conference long term. If Cincinnati were to join the Big 12 I would definitely take that job but not the case so far. No reason Purdue can't be as successful as Iowa with the right coaching. And I think many coaches would love to be the Kirk Ferentz of a similar team.

That's true. Perhaps I'm discounting recruiting too much when it comes to Purdue. They have to find that sweet spot above the Mac but below OSU/scUM/MSU in recruiting, which leaves a bare pool... but if Iowa can sustain and win the West consistently, then perhaps Purdue could too.

A lot of Purdue's downfall was that Fleck was recruiting better than anyone ever has in the MAC. All the guys that made WMU go 12-0 are the guys who would have made Purdue win at least 6.

Beau hit this pretty good and IrishLion is right on the sweet spot. There is also no reason that Purdue should be recruiting at a lower level than IU for football.

i would imagine he has a REALLY good shot at the houston job so might be a moot point....however i couldn't imagine coaching under saban...kiffin and him have had some riffs between each other and kiffin doesn't get the recognition i think he wants as saban gets almost all of the credit...orgeron and him are boys.....lsu is going to pony up some big bucks because they don't have to with orgeron but they are in aranda and will for OC....Also take a notice who LSU just offered at the qb position...bama commit Tua

Plus, Joey Freshwater's cover isn't blown in the Baton Rouge bar scene, yet.

If there is any, I am. What is it?

This:

Every year is going to be different," CFP executive director Bill Hancock said. "Football seasons are like snowflakes, they're all different. Next year we'll be standing here talking about some other way it fell out. And that's great."

It was in reference to the playoff committee director shooting down an expanded field, citing that "football seasons are like snowflakes, they're all different"

That's a favorite line of Jack's, but I took it more of Mandel poking fun at the idea of settling for the status quo of the format, rather than pushing for the best option (8 teams).

Neal Brown makes the most sense next, unless they can somehow get Fleck or convince Charlie Strong to not sit on his buyout for a year.

As much as this has become the narrative, the truth is last year is the first time WMU had a better class than Purdue (by 247 Comp ranking). The only WMU players that would have made a difference at Purdue are 2star Corey Davis (WMU was only offer) and LT Chukwuma Okorafor who had offers from Ohio St, Oklahoma, Nebraska & Iowa.

Even their QB, 2star Zach Terrell (who's had a very good career) probably would have been a clipboard warrior at Purdue. In his time at WMU, Purdue has had 4star Danny Eitling who transferred to LSU and started, 3star Austin Appleby who transferred to Florida and started, 3star David Blough from TX is the starter now and his back up was former 4star Elijah Sinclair of KY.

I went through WMU's roster and they had 7 guys who had at least one P5 offer and most of them were from Iowa St, Illinois & Syracuse. Illinois offered the WMU players because they suck while ISU & Syracuse offered because they have new staffs straight out of the MAC.

Purdue as bad as they are has a 81.94 average player composite score, that's second worst in the B1G ahead of only Minnesota. WMU has a 80.50 which is just ahead of Toledo's 80.42 for the best in the MAC

Add to that, Purdue has always recruited nationwide. This year's class has 1 player from Indiana, last year's had just two.

The difference is coaching.

This.........Plus, I think some of you are discounting the lure of the B1G as well. Obviously the best football conference in the country this year and typically in the top two. Coaches are competitors and they like to test themselves against the best. You can't do that at Cincy.

I will be interested to see if any 5th year QB transfers take a look at Purdue. Brohm has had great success with his QBs and it is a system built for QBs to succeed.

His QB at Western, Mike White could possibly come with him and play next year. He threw for over 4000 yds this year. He was a transfer junior so he may have graduated. He started out at UCF or USF.

So what's everyone think about Fleck now? Sounds like he isn't going to Oregon, obviously didn't go to Purdue. Stay at western Michigan or Cincinnati?

Good call. He was from USF and yeah he did have a good year at WKU. Brohm runs a system that sets QBs up for success, I will be really interested to see what he can do at Purdue.

Stay at WMU and continue having success, so he can get hired when Kelly soils himself again?

If he stays at WMU Fleck will certainly have a chance to prove himself against the big boys with games against Wisconsin, USC, and MSU. Win a couple of those and would have to tbink he would be given serious consideration for ND and some other big jobs after nest season.

Beau Benken maybe.

Not sure my resume would get a callback. Everyone would be saying that my lone 10-0 season was a fluke. He wasn't even the sole head coach that season!
