I wonder if some of these programs are turned off by his personality. I wonder if AD's and such at bigger programs could handle all the row the boat stuff and what not. I'm all for it, and I think the kids eat it up. But what about the suits?

I said it earlier in this thread or a different thread, but I think ND NEEDS a guy like Fleck at the helm.

The whole "treat everything like it's all business" thing doesn't jive with the mystique or tradition of Notre Dame, at least not 100% of the time like it is with BK. They are leaving a huge motivational advantage on the table when someone isn't getting the kids jacked up and in a frenzy to stand up to the history and tradition of the program.

It doesn't have to be directly appealing to the kids to "wake up the echoes!" or "Shake down the Thunder!"... they might view that as cheesy if you press it too often. But for the love of god, at least get somebody who is going to sprint out of the tunnel and make these guys excited and hungry to become part of the mystique of Notre Dame.

Really? I would think super flashy to hard nosed defense would be too big of a switch for the flash of Oregon

well they are likely gonna hire Schiano so they obviously aren't afraid of that. Read that Phil Knight wants "substance, not style". I am guessing the days of the Oregon hurry up/quack attack offense and no defenses days are over.

I agree. Let's face it, ND is not going to get a Stoops, Meyer, Saban, Harbaugh type coach. Why not switch it up and go with a young energetic-type? There's no reason not to. We are at the bottom now, why not take a chance?

I know this is probably a pipe dream, but is it at all possible that there has been communication between Fleck and ND and the reason Fleck is turning down these other jobs is because an agreement is in place in which he will succeed BK at a certain point?

Totally.

It is a tiny-bit possible, in the sense that all things are possible.

I would doubt it. Doesn't make sense. Only if he has something in writing that guarantees him the spot and I would doubt JS would do that. Trying to project the future is impossible. What if BK gets the team to the playoffs or has a very solid season next year? Sorry PJ, but Kelly seems to have turned the ship around, so we're going to keep him. To many things can change over the next year.

I think it's not out of the realm of possibility. Fleck is next in line as the hot ticket item in the mid tier conferences to move into the big boy leagues.

He will get a big gig no matter how long he stays at WMU (while getting paid handsomely from the sounds of it).

JS could say, hey, if you are interested in ND - if BK doesn't make it past next year, you are our top candidate. Are you willing to wait it out one year possibly? If BK stays, you will still get a good top tier HC spot if you want to start moving.

Every year there are going to be big HC positions open.

I think it'd be smart of Rhule to have a short contract with a smaller buyout because that Baylor job has officially turned ugly. Gutsy of him to grab it. They have literally one commitment right now. They death penaltied themselves.

Agree, this is somewhat of a head scratcher to comprehend. He's coming in with a wounded program, is not connected in Texas for recruiting, and has a depleted team in place due to defections/transfers/etc. by past, present, and potential players. Advantage UT, Herman is coming in at the perfect time to snatch everything he wants.

So Rhule and Taggart are out. Fleck it is. And frankly if he even somewhat competes with Wisconsin he should be hired on the spot.
