UGA is coming in the season has a top 5 team. A win here will set ND up for the top 4 rank in the first CFP rankings.

It would be great if we (fans) could show up there like they showed up here. Won't happen...mainly because there wont be so many UG fans wiling to give up their seats. I'll be there tho...looking forward to it. Will be interesting to see how much I'll have to pay for tickets..

Yup, it’ll be an event in Athens. I predict they will set a new home attendance record if allowed to exceed capacity in some way. If not, they’ll at least tie record.

I hope ND is more hungry & motivated than UGA b/c Dawgs & fanbase will use this as a referendum on why they should’ve been in the CFP. They’ll be 100% wrong...especailly after they laid an egg in their bowl game & got rolled by LSU in regular season. But..if ND gets embarrassed, that will be the narrative.

For those that want to pay, the tickets will be available. I've been to several huge UGA games and was surprised at availability. Fans are definitely opportunists. It will be an "event", but keep in mind many went to SB last year so the uniqueness is not so unique.

Sure they will enjoy the chance to beat ND, but I've heard a lot of fans say ND is likely the 4th, 5th, 6th, or even 7th most difficult game on their schedule... Most if not all of the folks I've heard from think TAMU, @Auburn, and Florida are clearly their toughest 3. A lot are as concerned with KY, SCar, Missouri, and even @TN as they are with ND.

The one bad thing is that ND is somewhat early, and will be the biggest early game they have (Vandy, Murray St, and Ark St are before). Wouldn't be surprised that UGA fans who are not season ticket holders are active buyers too.

And keep in mind our game @Clemson was an "event" for them. There were plenty of tickets available throughout the cycle even before the hurricane came into the picture. I got front row and didn't pay a king's ransom in August-ish (I think).

Typical SEC fan. No one plays football but the SEC and every time they lose it was because their "heart wasnt in it"

Mustve been a lot of heartless SEC players the last couple of years then

I hear ya but I suspect most UGA fans don’t want to admit the ND game will be a bigger event. Is it their most important game on their schedule? No. But the hype will be plentiful. I could see Game Day being there just b/c of the 2 name teams playing for the 1st time in Sanford Stadium. Both teams should be undefeated so regardless of how good ND really is, it will by hyped based on that & last season’s success.

TAMU may have the toughest slate in America and they should be improved. I thought Auburn should’ve gone after Hurts, Martell or Wimbush for Gus’s system b/c it doesn’t seem to work w/ a Pro STyle QB like STidham who just declared for the draft after a subpar season. Doesn’t that leave them w/ a freshman starting QB?

I am planning on going if I can get some tickets through ND. I don't think I will go if I have to pay a premium.

Hey YJ,

What’s the recommended lodging choices in Athens? Are they all 2-night minimum on game weekend? How early would you recommend booking a room...or is it already too late?

Thanks

It will be very difficult/pricey if not impossible to get something in Athens. I helped folks plan their trip to UGA shortly after the game in SB and everything was already booked. Keep in mind the dates were announced in 2014... Your choices are spending too much to get something 20ish miles outside of Athens in a podunk town, or doing what I would recommend... Which is staying in ATL or camping. You might still find an airbnb or something pop up in in/near Athens occasionally, but it will likely be $$$.

Getting to Athens is a little painful, similar to getting to SB from Indy. Assuming you are flying or driving in and your starting point on your way to Athens is ATL, you have more or less two ways to get to Athens. Highway 78, or 316 (I typically go 316). Both will suck on game day, so leave early. AND ALWAYS USE WAZE.

For those flying in, I recommend either staying in the Buckhead or Virginia Highlands area (both downtownish and trendy). Or maybe northside (closest to the 316 start) in Gwinnett.

If you are driving in and outdoorsy, it's a perfect time of year to camp in GA. Lakefront spots for tents and RVs w/ electric are plenty on Lake Lanier, and a straight shot on Highway 129 to/from Athens. Lake Oconee is also an option and a tad closer than Lanier, but I've never camped there.

Happy to help anyone with directions and recommendations. Feel free to PM me.

Honestly, bigger event and tougher opponent are two very different things. The UGA guys I know (and I know too many) are a mix of good guys who are logical, and on the other side, Go Dawg and SEC fanboys.

Just being factual, UGA will likely be ranked 3rd or 4th, and TAMU and FL will likely be top 10 to start the year. Auburn and Missouri top 25. Maybe even KY too. I'll predict ND is in the 10-15 range. ND will be UGA's first ranked opponent, so that will add hype. If I'm a UGA fan, the ND game will be more of "an event" than a "worry". It will be early so I'd be hyped, but it is a home game for them and doesn't impact conference standings, so the worry factor would be medium. That's the factual stuff, then add in the lack of respect the SEC has for ND. For us though, it's our biggest game of the year.

And yes, TAMU has the real "insanest" schedule lol.

Absolutely and they will be hostile and bullies, I live here and I can tell you right now they are waiting for this one. Man would I like to see my Irish shut some traps. It will be nothing like the open arms welcome we gave them. Be careful big man.

I've been to several UGA games. They are far more hostile to certain teams , than they are to others, and have been pretty decent to OoC teams. Rivalries like Clemson, SCar, Auburn, GT, and FL are typically the ugliest. Bama has been getting uglier. I think TAMU is gaining steam too.

There's ALWAYS the drunk redneck contingent of "GO DAWGs" repeaters, but the students and typical fans aren't that bad. I've been there for several UT games (UT has beat them in Athens a few times in the last decade) with UT groups, and even then, most of the fans weren't that bad. Even when wearing orange or ND colors, I've tailgated with UGA fans and after-partied at the bars with little to no issue. But the million times you hear GO DAWGS will sound like fingernails on a chalkboard before the day/night is over.

Agreed 100%. I think ND will be ranked in the top 10 based on last year & fact that they should be 2-0 going into Athens.

I have no doubt that UGA looks at this game as a tune-up b/c they, like 99% of SEC fans; believe ND is overrated.

The SEC East has been the Billy Carter (to borrow a Georgia personality) of the SEC for almost ten years. Georgia now looks like they can compete for a CFP. Mullen will get UF back to where Florida fans think they already are as last year was smoke & mirrors w/ some ugly losses but all people remember is their bowl win.

The SEC West will be Bama w/ TAMU vying for #2 in the division. I don’t see Arkansas or Ole MIss gaining any ground. MSU should take a step back as they try to rebuild that defense. Auburn will probably surprise folks since no one expects much out of them as they break in a new QB.

P.S. Thanks for the tip on traveling to Georgia.

The only two things I trashed in my tour of the SEC (see book below) were the Bama frat culture and the A&M 1984 cult. I pulled the punch a bit on A&M because I met some genuinely kind and caring people who didn't seem to know they were programmed. But 3 days in Aggieland made me never want to go back.

The creepiest thing I got from the Ags was hearing that the CIA does half their recruiting from off A&M's campus because the values align.

Edit: It was the creepiest thing until now because nobody told me about the jizz jar

Yeah, I toyed with the idea of hitting the road for this one, but initial pricing seemed a bit too steep to make sense of it. As it stands, I think I would prefer to head to Louisville Labor Day weekend for a trip, and attend several home games, rather than pony up for one big trip to UGA. That's a lot of money to drop on a traveling to a place where you're going to be treated like $hit

Some fan bases get violent, gotta be careful who you represent and what time the game is being played (Later games lead to more drunks). I went to Cincinnati one year to support the Bus when the Steelers played the Bengals in the playoffs. It was a late night game, lot of drunk fans, and they were in a pissy mood cause Carson Palmer went down with that knee injury. I was respectful, and I don't think I cheered the team once, I only clapped during positive plays (Not when Carson went down). That didn't prevent the Bengals fans from shouting threats and insults, shoulder checking me, and one guy smacked me in the back of my head. The later was because the Bengals were giving away free towels, and they were clearly marked for all fans. I wasn't going to grab one, but mom asked me to grab one for our cousin who was a Bengals fan. That prompted some jackhole to smack me and ask "Why don't you leave those for Bengal fans?" Needless to say it was a long, dark walk back to the car after the game. Don't give two shits about the Steelers now, but I'm not going to Cincinnati again as an opposing fan, I can tell you that.

There are plenty of college fan bases that are like that too. Grandpa told me of going to a Miami/ND game in the 80s and the Miami fans were pissing on ND fans and dumping beer on them (He saw it, didn't happen to him personally). Saw Michigan fans start shoving matching with Irish fans in the early 2000s too, and one time it turned into a fist fight. They've been pretty tame in recent years though, their record has humbled them a bit. As far as Georgia fans, I was at the game two years ago. For the most part the fans were very hospitable, met some very cool fans that waited an hour with us to see the Trumpets Under the Dome because they were big fans of college traditions and wanted to see it. There were a lot of Georgia fans that came out for that. The only negative thing I can say about them is that they were complete slobs. They threw their trash all over campus, it was disgusting. Beer bottles all around campus, all over the place. Smashed glass everywhere, it was a real mess after their visit. I've never seen another fan base deface campus like that.

I can speak to the scUM bit. I've been to the big house for a few ND games and I think 2/3 I've had a beer can thrown at me, half full. Took everything in me not to throw a punch at the d-bag, but I had a $200 ticket in my pocket and wanted to make sure it was used.

It's not so much that I couldn't handle the UGA fans, more or less I think a trip to UL could be decent, and I'd still have enough in the budget to make a couple of home games.

I believe YJ that they won't be as bad as we think they could be, but I just wonder if it might be worse than anticipated given the non-conference aspect, seeing as how we played them recently in a tight game, and they could be butt hurt about us getting in over them in the playoff. They ran their mouths a LOT before they got stomped by UT.

I expect a lot of S-E-C and Go Dawgs chants, but very hospitable opponents if they're anything like the fans that came to South Bend...just messy as fuck

I went to Neyland and watched the 2004 Irish upset top 10 UT and it was awesome. I’m sure there were some idiots but the UT fans I was around were very hospitable & respectful. I remember them telling me as we filed out of the stadium “ya’ll got a good team”. I responded “I wanted ND to win but we also need a new coach”. That was a frustrating season as ND knocked off two top ten teams in UM & UT but had some horrible losses including the BYU opener which most looked at as a tune-up game.

The thing I respected about Vol fans is they NEVER ceased singing Rocky Top....even when it was obvious their team was going to lose.

My last Razorback game was in LR when Petrino’s Hogs led by Meth Head Mallett beat Les Miles & Co. LSU fans were trying to feed all of us w/ their excess gumbo. That was a fun atmosphere.

The Grove is always a great time...at least pre-game. If you enjoy People Watching, make the Grove a part of your bucket list. Like Ole Miss fans say, “We’ve never lost a tailgate” & “We redshirt Miss Americas”. The best tshirt my Ole Miss buddy had read “We’re not snobs” on the front & on the back it read “...we’re just better than you”.

I was at that ND@UT game too. It is the reason I'm a part time fan of UT still today. One of my buddies that's a UT grad took me. After moving to the South, and hearing all the SEC fan horror stories, I was a tiny bit worried after we upset them. The fans were all gracious and complimentary. I ended up partying with the RV crowd till the early hours. Even made friends with a hot little Tennessee grad...

After that, started going with my buddy more frequently. I'd always set up a TV to watch ND at the tailgate..... I found out there are a lot of Vol fans that also cheer for ND.

Sounds like we had similar experiences at that game. I was so down on ND that season that I kept yelling “they’ll still find a way to lose” after every big play. I’m sure I was pissing UT fans off once it was obvious ND was going to win. Once the Irish D knocked Ainge out of the game (separated shoulder?), it was over. I think Rick Clausen was inserted as his back up.

What a waste of talent that season....2 wins over Top 10 teams and all those embarrassing losses.

it was such a weird year. Thought we were back on track after the opening loss to BYU. Then getting embarrassed by PU after beating a top 10 Meatchicken and MSU. The bowl loss to Oregon State, which is probably the worst college program ever, was just sad.

Back to UT. I've never had such a warm welcome from an opposing team, especially one we beat/upset.

Check out a Nebraska game, they're very cool. Utah fans were pretty exceptional too in 2010 even though they came in ranked and we upset them. Georgia fans were pretty decent, just super messy.
