Here is to hoping that Bob Elliott has been spending a good portion of his time post Navy on studying Stanford and stopping this offense.

Good point, wonder what that breakdown of his time has been. They're not a fancy offense but their OL/lineups have some tells I'd imagine.

Karlos Williams missed a whole month earlier for the Bills. There are some good quotes and articles about his concussion. The bad ones can easily keep you out that long especially if you have had any concussions in the past.

I read the transcript of Kelly's Sunday teleconference. Kelly said he expects Cage back for Stanford. He also said that he expected Nick Watkins, Nick Coleman and Devin Butler to be in the mix to replace KVR. All have different strengths; all will likely play.

Side note: the transcript consistently referred to Devin Butler as Adam Butler. Wtf? He didn't change his name and I missed it did he?

To be fair he's a solid tackler, bad coverer. But Stanford isn't a great passing team and it makes sense IMO to play the more physical corner in this one.

Butler has a little crazy in him. I'm excited to see him go out there, probably suck in coverage but at least smack some people and maybe cause a fumble.

ND offense (5 games) vs Stanford defense (6 games):

Scoring : (#14) 34.0 pts/game ---vs--- (42) 28.3 pts/game
Rushing: (#41) 4.7 yds/att, 169 yds/game ---vs--- (#36) 5.0 yds/att, 163 yds/game
Passing: (#23) 9.3 yds/att, 285 yds/game ---vs--- (#74) 6.7 yds/att, 230 yds/game
Total : (#22) 6.4 yds/att, 454 yds/game ---vs--- (#61) 6.2 yds/att, 439 yds/game

Stanford offense vs ND defense:

Scoring : (#13) 23.0 pts/game ---vs--- (#28) 25.8 pts/game
Rushing: (#15) 5.1 yds/att, 213 yds/game ---vs--- (#68) 5.2 yds/att, 192 yds/game
Passing: (#94) 7.2 yds/att, 175 yds/game ---vs--- (#25) 6.5 yds/att, 189 yds/game
Total : (#46) 5.9 yds/att, 388 yds/game ---vs--- (#32) 6.0 yds/att, 384 yds/game

These stats show Stanford can move the ball both rushing and passing. ND may find
it's passing game somewhat restricted.

Merged your thread with this one. Good info though.

Yup - be nice to talk this game up like Georgia Tech and ND just to see Notre Dame destroy them thanks to Elliott's planning.

...Grant it Georgia Tech absolutely blows this year but i'm talking pregame hype.

Yeah, in running situations or zone situations, if any, Butler will be fine. And Watkins is cut from the same cloth, although Kelly subtly but specifically called him out yesterday to "raise his compete", I think was the exact phrase. But in man-coverage passing situations, Coleman might be the best bet.

Is Stanford one of the games that it was said Grace and the other physical players would play specifically in? Odds we still see Joe every single snap getting pancaked?

I'm not excited to see Butler out there in any capacity. He's caused one fumble his entire career. Let's not act like he's a thumper out there with high upside. Unless someone sprinkled magic fairy dust all over him, then I don't see how he could have improved enough to be a capable option for us. If he started, then we are in trouble, imo.

How is their scoring offense ranked higher when ND has scored more points??

wonder if we see a lot of tori hunter jr in the secondary also?

ps don't want/wouldn't be able to take another mccaffrey as gerhart "ticket to new York" type game Saturday night.

was worried about this one even before the prosise and KVR injuries, now I have the usual "impending doom" to deal with.

Go Irish!

You had to bring up Toby Gerhart! I was just getting over that nightmare! Yes, McCaffrey can cause us big trouble!

Going to be a tough one to pull out with all the injuries, plus we haven't won in Stanford for quite a while.

We're going to have score some points to win this game. Can't turn the ball over and capitalize on our red zone trips. I don't see any way this defense can really shut down Stanford. The good news is their defense definitely isn't as strong as in years past so I do think that we can score on them with some regularity.

The fact we're playing for cfp spot gives this teams talent and desire a chance to overcome adversity, and a stint to get well before play off time for several injuries.

This team is tenacious.

I like our chances...

I think people don't realize how much this team scores. Have played some good defenses and still are scoring 34 pts. per game LOL.

anyone else remember watching the high school AA Game down in san Antonio, and seeing this mccaffrey kid for the first time?

knew even back then he was gonna be special...the kid seemed to have a step on everyone out there.

we cant have our safetys 20 yds off the LOS all game, rather we should sell out at the LOS all game, have at least one in the box all game, and just bring pressure and take our chances with the deep ball.

not confident with just an adams (backed up by dexter) at RB here and even if prosise plays don't think he can/will "prosise" people coming off an ankle injury as an rb.

not a bad time for a big special teams contribution...(field position will be huge)

Agree. Would have to win in a shootout. I said this before but if we are even or win the turnover battle we should win the game.

i fear our inability to hold those large 4q leads and not "close games" will finally bite us in the ass in this one

The "D-Boys" will either rise to the occasion or get exposed quickly. Tons of nervous excitement about this one.
