Brian Fremeau's day job is at UND.

That would be correct good sir. I work under him for the Student Activities Office. It's fun to have a guy that does CFB stats to talk to though.

I just can't see this being a close game. We throttled them on the road last year, with arguably less talent. I understand they are returning 19 starters, but that is a mute point to me. You can return every starter but those starters are inferior to ND's. I predict another blowout to the tune of last week. Go Irish, and BTFD

...starting to get the bad feels. Guess it's just second nature at this point. When I feel good about this team, my heart tries to cushion the inevitable blow.

Well if it helps you feel better, I do believe that in the last 5 years, ND has lost a game immediately after showing up ranked in the top 25.

You guys need to calm down. Talk is cheap, let's see the product on the field. They beat a FCS team and they got hyped up about it. If anyone should be worried, it should be Purdue. We should dominate the line of scrimmage once again

Also, what are you guys worried about anyway?

Stanford last year?

Last year I think it would be South Florida. I seriously don't think we've won a game as a ranked team in the top 25 in the last 5 years. ND has only held a rank for 1 game in a row, and it was a loss every time.

We don't have short term memory loss. We remember how we beat ourselves against inferior teams last year.

I had these feelings before the Navy, game too, though, so it could be conditioning from years of that.

I agree 100%, I will always have a little doubt in my mind but we should still talk about the postives going into this game.

We are going into this game with no injuries, the defense is solid, and the offense is scoring at will.

There isn't much negative about this team right now

It is conditioning. It never seems to fail right after I feel we're moving in the right direction that the ****ing rug gets yanked out from under me(us). I hope this year is different, because that feeling ****ing sucks.

I need an Irishtrinity pep talk.

Last year there was similar sentiment in regards to Purdue after their throttling of Southeast Missouri State before they played us. I think Purdue will be much improved, but i think they will be hard pressed to score over 20 points. The only way they have a chance is by keeping this a low scoring contest.

Notre Dame will come out and shove the ball down Purdue's throat. They have a relatively inexperienced linebacking unit, which is half of the party when it comes to stopping the run. Of course they have Short filling a gap, but one man does not make a defense.

Can't wait until Saturday!

You and me both man... Purdue is hyped and putting a lot on this game. Hope is talking, the Purdue players saying how much more talented they are. I read this Purdue preview from Black and Gold and got more worried..
Gold & Black Illustrated - Gold & Black Express, Sept. 5 Edition

One of the "By the Numbers" stats in that article says:

"42: Purdue's margin of victory against Eastern Kentucky. The Boilers have beaten their last two FCS opponents a combined 107-6 the last two seasons (59-0 vs SEMO last season)"

I think that tells you enough about why their confidence is misguided. They are confident because they beat up on the type of team that ND refuses to play. They didn't give me a single legitimate reason they think they will beat ND, just that they haven't done it in a while so they'll be extra motivated. The seniors last year had never beaten ND either, no? I just think this confidence is a lot of talk, and the ND players know that.

Pretty sure they were in the Top 25 when they beat Nevada (preseason ranking) and Wash St in 2009; but lost their next games. But your general point is valid - very poor history since post 2006 when ranked. On a positive note, the law of averages dictates that this has to change soon :)

Navy would blow Eastern Kentucky out. I'm not terribly worried about Purdue. I'm always a little worried about us, though. As long as we don't throw up all over ourselves we should handle Purdue relatively easily. They aren't good enough to beat us unless we play really poorly.

I stand corrected. The number of games the Irish have played as a ranked team is two in a row, not one. I am somewhat relieved for this weekends game. Hopefully they move up in the rankings instead of out after Purdue.

I never said we were. I'm just stating the fact that when ranked in the top 25 in the last 5 years, the Irish immediately lost a game or held a rank for no more than two games in a row.

If you guys are nervous about Purdue, how are you going to handle the days leading up to MSU? Michigan? Lol.

That article just reminded me how awesome Clausen was. God I miss him.

honestly? Probably better. I don't mind losing as much as I hate us beating ourselves. I've seen too much of that. MSU and Mich are two teams that I think could beat us if they have a great game, Purdue will only beat us if we trip all over ourselves. Unfortunately that's actually not out of the question, hence my nerves.

That brings up an interesting point, with some fun questions:

Would Brian Kelly have recruited Jimmy Clausen?

What would that coach-athlete relationship have been like?

Now that we can pretty much conclude that there was no advantage to Clausen coming out early, what could that season have been if he stayed?

The thing with being a Notre Dame fan now a days is worrying about a lose to every single team we play. Purdue is a team that is much improved but had 5 turnovers against an FCS opponent. That saying TerBush is a much better quarter back then Marve has been. If I was Danny Hope I would throw Hail Mary's every play against our Secondary. But I think Coach Kelly knows that he should do that and the Secondary will be much improved and will continue to improve as the year goes on. This should be a game that ND should win from the first snap just like last year. If we wanna bring back the Atmosphere we had with Coach Holtz and bring back that WINNING MENTALITY

Notre Dame vs. Purdue Preview

Notre Dame vs. Purdue Preview

The thing with being a Notre Dame fan nowadays is that we fear a loss to every team we play even if we should blow them out. Purdue is a much more improved team compared to last year's Purdue team. But saying that this years team had FIVE TO vs. Eastern Kentucky!! An FCS Opponent. (Sounds familiar to all Irish fan??) Haha. Terbush compared to Marve I would choose Terbush any day of the week. If I was Coach Hope I would throw Hail Mary's every play against our Secondary, but I think that Coach Kelly has put in a lot of effort into improving our Secondary. It will improve over the next 13 weeks.

To get back that GameDay Atmosphere in Notre Dame Stadium that was there when Coach Holtz was still HC, we will need to get off to a strong and fast start just like last years contest against the Boilermakers.

Just like Coach Kelly said, and I'm paraphrasing here "Before we can win, we need to stop losing." This should be a game that Notre Dame SHOULD WIN!! But we will have to see how the secondary improves from Navy to Purdue. Plus, I can't wait to see Everett Golson become better week after week.

Prediction:
Notre Dame 35 Purdue 14

Go Irish!!

We will get to see our team in the trenches. To see if it was just Navy or if this is the new ND line we thought we could end up witn. And we will see a team that will test our secondary more then Navy ever could have.

If Clausen stayed he would have thrown for 350+ per game

But what if Kelly had a heart attack and died; would they have gotten along? Would Clausen even have started?

Please note liberal use of italics.

ESPN "experts" predicting ND will lose to Purude and/or ND would lose to Purdue in West Lafayette but might eek this one out:

PURDUE at No. 22 NOTRE DAME

Adam Rittenberg: I'd pick Purdue if the game were in West Lafayette, and I expect Notre Dame to start slowly after the long trip to Ireland. But the Irish have a more dynamic offense than the Boilers, and Purdue's defense will start to show some cracks in the third quarter against Everett Golson. Both Caleb TerBush and Robert Marve see plenty of snaps in this one for the Boilers. ... Notre Dame 27, Purdue 21

Brian Bennett: Every time Notre Dame does something good, it usually backslides. So I see the Irish faltering after their strong performance in Dublin. Purdue is due, and Kawann Short dominates defensively and blocks a field goal for the win. ... Purdue 28, Notre Dame 24

Also apparently struggle with math at the end there.
