Grantland has a nice fluff interview with Brady Hoke at the top of their front page at the moment. Not going to link to it because **** that. But why is it that if Grantland had a piece on Notre Dame it would be examining whether Notre Dame could still compete or, better yet, if we are still "relevant" (without a hint of irony).

Whatever. 8-4 with blowout losses to 'Bama, ND and OSU should take some of the shine off of these *******s.

I will be there at the game with my older sons, and family, and a couple of good friends. I am particulary interested in seeing how the Wolverines "breathe" this year. Earlier posts have been made about their lack of depth at a few positions, and I understand 12 players have a chance to see some time, will their luck hold?

I also have a question about the pep rally. I can't keep track, is this a public one?

The pep rally for the Michigan game is public and will be in front of the library.

I thought they were always public....I used to go to em all the time when I lived up north.

I think sometimes they have indoor pep rally's that tickets have to be purchased. Don't know if those are for football though.

I found this on SI.com and I figured this thread would be the best place to share it.

"First Player to Fall Out of Heisman Race"

Staples
QB Denard Robinson, Michigan. He plays Alabama in Week 1. That should do the trick.

H. Anderson
Robinson. Picking Robinson here for reasons of chronology: He has to play Alabama, and he has to play Alabama first, bless his heart. (There's a real hater sweet spot happening with this first game -- either Robinson's narrative plummets to earth with the season barely underway, or the Tide's does.)

L. Anderson
Robinson. Robinson will be on the national stage on Saturday evening when Michigan faces Alabama in Arlington, Texas. With a big night, Robinson will emerge as the early season Heisman front-runner. With a bad night against Bama's young but relentless D, his Heisman hopes could very well be dashed. I expect a bad night for Robinson.

Glicksman
Robinson. Shoelace led Michigan to its first BCS bowl victory since 1999, but he also saw his stats fall off a bit in 2011. Robinson's passing and rushing yards both dipped from his sophomore year, and while the Wolverines should contend for a Big Ten title, he could have trouble replicating his astronomical 2010 stats. It also doesn't help that Michigan opens against Alabama, which led the FBS in rushing, passing and scoring defense last season.

Rubin
Robinson. Those concerns about Alabama's young D will be put to rest in Week 1 -- at Robinson's expense. Shoelace struggled protecting the ball last season, and he'll be bitten by that familiar bug in the opener, coughing up his Heisman hopes along with the football.

I'm really looking forward to Alamaba's D picking off those lob passes Shoelace loves to throw.

Seems like Hoke is trying to (unsuccessfully) use Denard as a pocket passer. Do we think he scraps this approach like last year by the time the ND game rolls around?

I honestly thought he looked good. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. ND is nowhere close as good as Bama on D because of the huge gap in linebacker and secondary play. Of course they made Denard look bad at times. I am worried about Michigan's skill players more this year than last year though. Gardner has legit potential and I love that Norfleet kid, wish ND would have offered him with the way he looks.

There is NOTHING to take away from this game. Alabama is going to make everyone look silly this year.

Was that dictated by the lack of Toussaint at RB?

I'd think he'd run the same offense next two weeks against AF and MASS where they'll win the trench battles.

That 50 bomb to Gallon, IN STRIDE, was no lob pass.

I noticed the same thing and did not like it – not at all. I've decided to go with the "even a blind pig finds a truffle now and again" attitude. The Irish just need to plug his snout with turf on every play.

so the other 15 passes that were worse than Tebow passes dont count cause he made one solid deep ball to an open WR?

Seriously, Denard doesnt look any more impressive as a passer. We know he can throw the ball deep, the corners just have to cover it. One of the deep passes he completed, the Alabama CB tripped (much like Russell), so its hard to say Denard's "great arm" made that play a success.

Denard as a passer still doesnt worry me; though if our CBs dont play better at Purdue, I might change my mind; but him as a runner still scares me to death.

Where did I say "great arm"?

Feel free to highlight it.

Where did I comment on 15 other passes?

I didn't say that either, did I?

Robinson actually threw 26, completing 11. And the pass I commented on was as good as any ball Clausen ever threw. And no, I'm not comparing Robinson's career to Clausens but rather that specific pass I mentioned.

He threw for 200 yds against a much better Alabama Secondary than we have. And he did that without UM's starting RB. They knew he was dropping back as UM doesn't have a backup QB. Hoke has to protect Robinson.

Last year Robinson threw for 338 yds against a better ND Secondary than we have now.

He didn't worry people last year as a passer, did he?

But he didn't win the ND game with his feet, did he?

Speaking of their LT, any news?

I found two articles from Sunday afternoon but nothing further on the extent of his injury. Another player rolled up on his legs. Normally there be something on Monday but that's Labor Day. I imagine he'll be examined at least by team phsyicians but there may be no news forthcoming due to the holiday.

Taylor Lewan 6-8, 308, RS Jr. Sat out his freshman year. 15 consecutive starts. Phil Steele lists him as his #5 OT (he lists Zach Martin #18). When he went down Hoke moved the RT to LT, the RG to LT, and had a scrub play RG.

From last year's OL UM lost All Amercan Center and Rimington Award winner David Molk and Starting RT Mark Huyge

UM's other injury of note was Starting CB Blake Countness who is out for the year with torn liagments. Courtney Avery, a Jr, replaced him against Bama but struggled. They also tried two other CBs, Taylor, a So, and Richardson Fr, later in the game.

BGIF beat me to it, but let me just add that we said the same things the past 2 years (and if you were a member here I'm sure you would have been saying the same things) and yet he beat us both times with his arm (4th down dart on their last drive 2 years ago, 300+ yds throwing against us last year with experienced corners and safeties). So why are you so confident that we'll automatically shut him down this year?

I watch him play and I think he's an awful thrower. But then I remember that he's chewed us up in the air in the past so there's absolutely no reason for me to be confident about this year's defensive performance against him. We haven't beaten him yet...
