And Virginia was our trap game. Prep hard for the opener against a top flight name (Texas) and get through week 2 as you prepare for a top 10 team in GT. We could shock people with a really strong performance.

That said, I picked GT by 7.
The slack I will cut the team is that Virgina looked like a bit of trap game coming into the season. Sandwiched between Texas and GT it was probably hard to keep them focused. Oh well.

Despite how down I've sounded on the team I'm not conceding this game whatsoever. I think it will be important for us to control the tempo of the game and keep GT off the field as much as possible. We really need to pound the rock and keep the drives long. Everyone has been hyping our offensive line well on Saturday it's time to rely on them and let CJ and Adams be fed.

I'd also like to our front 7 assert their authority as well. I'd rather not see us get pushed around but start bullying people.

Very true, and also hard to make inferences from playing Tulane and Alcorn St.

One other note that may or may not have significance: people always talk about ND's trap games. GT start their conference slate after this weekend, and 2 of their first 5 games are against teams that are in the top 11, and the other 3 against teams in their own division (and all 3 of these teams went to bowl games last year). Here is to hoping that GT are looking ahead somewhat.... Okay, pipe dream over!

Nobody overlooks the Irish. Even when Faust, Davie, Weis and Willingham were here.

To me, this game isn't so much about GT and what their OL can do against the Irish defense. It is more about the Irish OL and how much can they dominate up front. Long, extended drives on offense, eating up large chunks of clock along the way, and converting your red zone chances into seven points is what I would like to see. Thomas and that crazy offense of GT can't hurt you if they are watching from the sidelines. Time for Harry and the boys to step up again and win the day.

This, plus BVG needs to take his head out of his @ss and keep it simple.

problem is we have 1 defensive linemen in Sheldon who can actually rush the passer (when he's not gassed). You simply can't rush 4 with these guys as they won't get home, Romeo Okwara in particular had me tearing my hair out watching him pass rush on Saturday, he just tries to slow bullrush on every play even when the pocket is rolled away from him, its just pointless!

Agree,,, Not saying he should rush 4 all game. I'm just tired of seeing some of the batsheet crazy calls and he needs to do something about the DB play. If he's going to get cute, let him get cute with JS or NM.

I put it in the prediction thread, but I'll also put it here:

For those of you that think ND wins this game, what gives you confidence that the defense will stop GT's triple option enough for the team to win?

I'm not trying to call anyone out or be a dick. I would love for my opinion to be swayed.

I don't think we can stop them but if we do it's because A) Jaylon being Jaylon (B) Farley and Shumate ball out (C) BVG coaches our guys to go for strips. Don't have much faith in B and C

I just feel like last year against Navy (and the year before), every time Navy would run the base triple option play and Reynolds would attack outside, we were watching Jaylon try to split the difference between the QB and the pitch man. And, despite that he's a freak and makes many plays, the truth is that there is absolutely no reason we should only have one defender on the outside accounting for both the QB and the A-Back... and yet, that seems to be the staffs only answer the past two years.

Every now and then a safety flies up to help out, but generally it's just the staff seeming to rely on Jaylon to be superman... and that is dumb. You're supposed to help your best player optimize his abilities, not spread him so thin against a tricky offensive scheme.

I said in the the other thread but if we're primarily focused on stopping the run there is no reason why Nyles Morgan shouldn't be playing. We need the guy that can fly into the backfield and be disruptive.

Shummate and Jaylon have been awesome, and while Farley's not getting a lot of burn, he's dependable when in there and this is his kind of game. So based on what your requirements are for a win, you should feel pretty good.

I'm with putting Morgan in now. Schmidt this year is clearly not the Schmidt of last.

Georgia Tech hasn't exactly faced good competition, so expecting their performance to dip isn't crazy talk. Triple option is all about timing, I think it's realistic to think, if Notre Dame doesn't shit the bed, that their timing will be affected. I also don't think the Virginia game was as alarming as many on here do.

We also don't know how good their defense is, and Notre Dame has the OL and skill position talent to score on any defense, backup QB or not.

Ultinately I think it's a toss up game.

I often wonder how much ND's annual struggles against Navy are a part of the Irish not worrying so much about losing that game and/or Navy saving a lot of new stuff for it. The argument being that either the D is schemed to try and avoid injuries (at the expense of effectiveness) or they just don't spend that much time on the triple option in practice because it doesn't translate outside of that one game and Navy is a team they should beat based on talent differential.

None of those issues are present this weekend.

I get the fact that Joe gets the defense aligned, but what does it matter when he physically cant make the play. He is a liability, and teams know that.

Seeing Joe blitz gave me flashbacks of Dan Fox from 2013. Just not the best use of a player's skillset

I'm predicting a close win. While I respect GT and their offense, they really do not have top-level talent across the board. Recruiting rankings are not everything and they don't apply as much in their triple option, but theoretically we have more talent than them at just about every position.

--Kizer looked a little skittish, but a full week with BK and 1st-team reps will be huge for him. It should also be much easier coming in at home than it will be trying to hold on to a win on the road in a hectic environment.

--Bob Elliott in theory has been prepping for the triple option just about the entire season. We easily have the athletes to shut it down.

--I think also our defense buys in this week with triple option prep much more than they would for a Navy game. The combo of losing Zaire and playing the #14 team in the country should have everyone locked in all week.

--Lastly, BK is great with young QBs. I think he is 14-1 here with a true frosh or redshirt frosh QB. I think he keeps it simple, and we move it fairly well against GT.

More of a gut pick than anything, but I think we win 27-20.

I expect relatively big weeks from Shummy, Farley, and Onowala. Onowala is good for this game IMO. He's not a big guy, but against GT he's big or at least good sized, and he has the speed and experience he should be able to make some plays. It's all about getting 1 TFL per reset of the chains. I know Jaylon can do it, and I think Onowala and Shummy/Farley playing close to the line can also contribute to TFL's.

Lastly, they're going to go for it on 4th downs, and when they do and don't get it, we need to take advantage with more than field goals.

I'm starting to feel more confident as we get closer. Here's why:

- I think Bob Elliott is a really smart dude. We vexed this smart dude with a year worth of research into how to stop this brand of spread offense. If we don't have an answer, then this staff simply cannot ever efficiently stop it. That is a lot of focus on an offense only two of our opponents use.

- Tulane forced three turnovers against GT

- While they got demolished by GT, Tulane put up almost 350 yards of offense against them. Tulane...

- Their corners are 5'11, per their roster. When I watch them, they look 5'9"-5'10". They are also not very fast.

- We are simply deeper, stronger, faster and more athletic than this team. We should be able to rotate in defensive linemen and physically stress this type of team. It's totally plausible that we don't... but rational thought would say we could.

Well, thenthis is our obvious play calling strategy!

Way too close to this for comfort....

Question: Do we have Jaylon spy Justin Thomas?

Not possible when you're defending the option.

I just hope they get him lined up on the play side. I think he'll be more of a factor if he's forcing their QB to make decisions rather than trying to clean up from the back side of the play.
