Typical B10 BS...make sure you have an open date before you play ND.

Why does ND allow this? How many years has B10 teams fluffed their schedule to stack the deck against ND when they play? Doesnt ND have any negotiating power other than $$$?

ND almost has zero power against this... Those teams make their own schedule. If ND gets put on the schedule for 2022, that school is going to try and keep an open date the week before if they can.

ND got real screwed in '14 and a little bit last year because of the ACC deal. They had to fit ND in where possible, and so ND got the short end of the stick on a lot of scheduling.

This year is much better. MSU is the only bye-week disadvantage I think.

Just seems awful suspicious that ND just happens to land after the open date. I cannot believe that to be coincidental.

Of course it's not coincidental. MSU is going to try and give themselves an extra week to prepare for ND if they can. ND can't put something in the contract that says, "no bye-weeks before us, or else we won't play you!" They literally wouldn't be able to schedule any good opponents.

It was the ACC deal that got ND screwed the most in '14 and a bit last year. Those instances of opponents having bye-weeks couldn't be helped.

This is a shitty situation but MSU is in a shitty situation having lost their QB and ALL their playmakers on D (minus one DL) and as a result NDFB will beat them by at least two scores. You can take that to the bank. They can't and won't hang with us even if they had a month to prepare. I think MSU goes 8-5 this year
GO IRISH.

I love Sportscrack.com. The owner has to be an Irish fan, he's always spot on when it comes to history and current player trends or sayings

A bitter rivalry renewed. "Beat Sparty" should be shouted when the Irish plant the flag into Sparty's dead chest.

#GoldenArmy14 and #IrishMob13 shirts are on sale for $5.

Wouldn't call it a "bitter" rivalry at all. Sparty has pulled a couple dick moves over the years, but that's to be expected given the long history here. They're the only team in the B1G that deserves our respect.

You have a beef with Purdue? What about Northwestern?

Northwestern might garner some bit of respect (Mostly as a school), but they've hardly been a rival in the last few decades since we don't play them much anymore. Purdue is Purdue, they're nothing but a doormat for the B1G now and they only serve to play the spoiler role because that's all they can hope to accomplish...get up for one or two games all season.

While we certainly have more respect for MSU than any other B1G program, I think it can still be a bitter rival. Going back to recent history starting with Davie, MSU has pulled off a number of upsets and some tightly fought games. Both teams tend to show up for this game. That said, if MSU is a bitter rivalry, Michigan is a loathsome one I guess.

No beef, really. Just don't have much to say about either of them.

You kids. Didn't have to live through the era of QB U. Probably just caught a taste of Brees when you were filling out your app for ND. Get off my lawn!

Navy was worse for way longer. Respect comes in many flavors for various reasons. 86 game rivalries don't grow on trees when you're an independent. SC finally passed Purdue as the #2 most played opponent last year behind Navy.

Northwestern? Beat them to end the losing streak and move on. Fitz will always get those boys fired up to play his dream team that didn't offer.

I was sad to see the Purdue game go, not because of any strong emotional connection I have with the series, but because they're the closest thing we've had to an annual cupcake game recently. But you're right that I'd probably feel differently about it had I been paying attention during their glory days. Wasn't Kyle Orton the last decent QB they produced?

I'll give Northwestern props for graduating their players and offering respectable degree value, but they are super salty about not being "Chicago's CFB team", and they're constantly running us down out of envy. Hard not to just give them a condescending pat on the head.

Purdue sucks. Bunch of wannabes. The BC of the Midwest.

Northwestern can put together a tough football team, credit to
Pat Fitzgerald. But their students/alums don't care. So, whatever.

Now Sparty? They're a rival worthy of the name. Nice to see them back on the sked.

Ara was 6-5 against Purdue. Leroy Keyes gave him fits.

Holtz was 11-0 with only one game not being a rout, '95 35-28

Purdue has had some good football teams. In the '60s and early '70s. In the Bob Davie/early Joe Tiller years (actually I'm pretty sure they had a better record than Notre Dame did when I was in college in the late '90s, and I attended two horrible losses in West Lafayette).
But, big-picture, they suck. They're occasionally dangerous but they'll never be big-time. That's just their nature. BC's the same way. MSU, on the other hand? They win conference championships, Rose Bowls and playoff berths.

Unfair to BC. Up until the past 6 years or so BC has been a very good program.

Ugh, but I will never forget how BC ruined my chance to see a Notre Dame National Championship. I've been a ND football fan for 23 years and still have not seen a National Championship...

If it was a cupcake game, the scoreboard rarely showed it. In the last 14 years at least every other season Purdue stayed within a score of us (Or won). Even in their down years, Purdue relishes the spoiler role. We've often come into the game overlooking them or we come out flat. I guess when you consider our regular rivals over the last decade, Purdue probably is the closest thing to a cupcake though. Navy gets to bowls more often than the Boilermakers do.

Curtis Painter put up some pretty big numbers in college...think he broke some of Brees' passing records.

We should beat these fools

you will beat them IMO.

Dantonio's team always struggle early on and get better as the season goes a long, and Kelly has given Dantonio fits over the years. I think he's one of the few offensive coaches who has kinda "figured out" Dantonio's defense.

Kelly is 3-1 against him and should be 4-0, stupid little giants no call.

What Kelly has done is challenge the press coverage of MSU by having the wide outs be physical and go deep. Issue with that this year is an inexperienced WR core. But it is a talented group of WR and still should be able to make plays.

I also agree that ND beats MSU this year.

I'm sure MSU will show up for the game and make it interesting, but it would be nice if it turns out to be a comfortable win after watching how they performed against Furman.

Didn't seem to affect us in 2013. Sure there was TJ, but outside of that, you had a freshman Fuller and freshman Robinson who were really testing MSU's defensive backs. Good thing they did, because of course Daniels pulled a disappearing act in that game.
