I take issue with the article touting PU as "holding its own" over the years with ND, citing its 26 wins being the third highest opponent win total against the Irish. The author is simply using misleading stats.

Does 26 wins sound like a lot? Sure it does, until you factor in the notion that PU has played ND 85 times over the years - more than all but a few other opponents. That means that PU has a 30% rate of success. That also means that for every 10 games they play against the Irish, they lose 7 of them. I'm not sure I would define that as "holding their own," and I would venture a guess that among ND's most frequent opponents, its also one of the worst success rates as well.

IIRC, last year's ND/Purdue game was immediately followed by the Chuck Martin play calling thread. That game should have never been close. Here's to better play calling and a blowout this time around.

That purdue article is some weak-ass shit.

1st, 26-57 is not "holding your own."

Also, when Tranquil flipped, boiler fans were up his ass w/stupid shit like, "you'll never play there, you'll just ride the bench, you'll play all the time here." Now that he is here and actually playing some meaningful minutes, it's, "oh, he'd be playing even MORE at purdue."

That's a joke.

I hope our guys bury these fools tomorrow.

That depends on how you define our "frequent" opponents. Of our four* historic rivals, their success rates are:
  1. USC - 43%
  2. MSU - 41%
  3. PU - 31%
  4. Navy - 14%

Navy is the only frequent opponent we've defeated more regularly.

*There are many teams we've played more frequently than UM who definitely aren't rivals-- Army, Pitt, and Northwestern, for instance. We've played Georgia Tech and Air Force almost as many times. So, in summary, get lost skunkbears.

Agree totally with the last line,.. what I did find interesting is that MSU has had almost the same success rate against us as USC has had... THAT is suprising.

As arrowryan noted, "Pretty good preview from a Purdue standpoint." It's perspective.

30% may not sound like much of a success rate but it would get you into Cooperstown today.

PU is a program that historically wins less than 53% of their games. In that light, winning 30% from the Winningest Percentage Program in Major college football is something to tout, especially if you're a 53 percenter.

PU only has 26 wins against ND and 8 of those, about 30% came from Faust, Davie, Willingham, and Weis. Another 7 wins came against Brennan, Kuharich, and Devore. Yes, 58% of PU's wins have come against ND's lesser coaches. On the other hand 90% of ND's wins were against PU's lesser coaches and they've a lot more than we have.

How many Hall of Fame Coaches has PU had? NCs? Heismans?

Ara Parseghian won over 80% of his games. He lost only 17 games in 11 seasons at ND BUT almost 30% of Ara's losses were to PU.

Ara was only 6-5 against Mollenkopf's PU. (Ara was 7-7 at NW and ND against Mollenkopf.) Griese, Keyes, and Phipps beat Ara 4 out of 5 years. The one year they didn't, ND won the NC. PU never lost more than 2 games in a season in that 5 year stretch.

The writer is hopeful but not optimistic. He expects a beating. He's right.

If you hit .300, you're in the Baseball Hall of Fame (edit: now I see BGIF's post that says the same. He's a smart man). Maybe that's the authors angle. I tend to agree w you however.

Guys guys, calm down. Eberhart Goldstein is not throwing any picks tomorrow. He's not turnover prone.

Tremendous stuff. Let's hope it continues as our young guys continue to improve and we approach the killer games on our schedule. Truly feel we will exercise some demons tomorrow by pounding PU, and continue on a roll against SU. If we can get past Stanford, and trip to FSU at 6-0, the buildup for that game will be out of control.

Don't sleep on UNC. Lots of talent on that team and in between Stanford and FSU, just screams let down game.

Weight. Wat?

You want to put those demons in the weight room for some progressive reps to make them stronger?

I'd rather we exorcise them and have them soil themselves by spewing pea soup and spinning their heads.

I agree to an extent. Before the season started, really worried. After seeing last week's performance, not so worried. I'm going to see how they do over the next 3 games and then freak out if necessary. They looked horrible last week, and I think we'll really have a good idea about our, and their capability when we meet. If they can be competitive with Clemson and VT, I'll certainly be worrying.

I figured put them in a room with Longo for a while. Obviously they will get fat and slow.
