Kind of, but I think it's a bit more nuanced than that. It's not like the administration says "these guys must be your captains." They're still selected by the players and coaches, the administration just has final approval over those selections.

Oh, I get that. I was just saying I was never aware that there was ever anything more to the process than the coaches picking some names and the players picking the few they wanted.

The captains are representatives of the University. They're in media, interviews, etc.

While I get that, aren't already condoning they're behavior and character by allowing them admittance to the University and on the football program?

Why is this? Seems incredibly petty that the administration has any call in who the team makes a captain. Should they start rubber stamping who starts as well?

I'm with this, if they are eligible by ND's standards, which as we know are higher than other places, then I'm not sure ND should be have any say in the rest. Unless I'm missing something.

So are the star players in games. Which are usually the people interviewed after games, practices, etc. It's not like we only march out captains for interviews.

Under that same philosophy, we might as well always make our QB a captain and have the Administration pick him. Since he'll be a "representative of the University" and all...

I'm just speculating, because I have no inside knowledge, but I picture something like this (all numbers are made up).

Let's say the NCAA requires a 2.0 GPA to compete. Notre Dame requires a 2.5 because higher standards and all that. But if you have less than a 3.0, you're on academic probation. You can still compete but need to go to extra study hall / tutoring sessions and you're ineligible to be a captain.

Or something.

I'm not saying I agree with it, just trying to throw out what it sounds like their rationality might be.

I also find it very hard to believe that Ronnie Stanley does worse in the classroom than KeiVarae Russell, who was apparently eligible last year (before he was suspended for academic violations). So I suspect it might have been some behavioral incident.

Don't know if captain of the football team is considered an officer of a student organization, but I'm gonna bet it has something to do with this clause in du Lac...

Eligibility for Student Activities (revised October 31, 2011)
Satisfactory academic and disciplinary standing is required in order to be eligible for student body office, class office, hall office or membership in the Campus Life Council, Hall President’s Council, Student Government, Club Coordination Council, or any judicial board. The same requirement applies to cheerleaders, officers of campus clubs, organizations or activities. Participation by students as members or leaders in extra-currciular clubs, programs, and activities could be limited in whole or in part if the student is found responsible for a violation of the University Standards of Conduct.

going to watch the game tonight for the first time on TV (was at the Texas game). I couldnt recall any passes to backs out of the backfield. CJ had 1 catch, but I didnt think it was out of the backfield.

Point is, our offense was very vanilla, IMO. And I dont know if they will necessarily have to do anything different this week or vs UMass, and maybe next week (i think the GaTech game comes down to our D).

Would be nice to not have to open the whole book until Clemson.

Hey does anyone know if the Watch ND ap works for away games? I'm unfortunately working a weekend event and need an alternative.

Anyone else think Tenuta is going to go blitz happy and try to pressure our young QB? Thinking that will happen until we pop them for some big plays.

Given the storms for tomorrow, I expect this game to be much closer than what most are predicting. UVA has a really decent defense (top 10ish last year) and plays well at home. This is a "look ahead" game before Georgia Tech. It'll be interesting to see what kind of effect lightning delays and such might have on the tempo of the whole affair... but I'm starting to expect scoring to be artificially deflated for ND by the conditions, and if UVA can punch in a couple scores (they usually bog down in the red zone) something like a 27-24 game might be what happens when normally it might be closer to 35-17.

Irish OL bulldozes cavs, we have two 100 yard rushers, and win by 23 :)

Yes. He will. It sounds like the weather may be bad so I think BK will be just fine with his run game and chewing up the clock. I think we see lots of chunk plays if the weather is bad.

Our OL will be up to the challenge. SUVa also runs a traditional power offense with some spread plays mixed in but they did not disguise it very well in the UCLA game. I think our D handles them well enough.

Because of the possible weather issues. Revised prediction 34-10 ND

Beat them Cavs Irish Nation. Be safe traveling to and from. Looks like potential for some crappy weather.

I want to see today how far back goes in his drops. He did a great job of staying in the pocket, but last year, Golson seemed to have forever to throw because he'd drop further back and it worked for him. Malik didn't seem to have as much time to throw last week and it wasn't cause the OL wasn't doing their job, he just drops to a different depth than Golson did.

Malik has big hands, I'm not so much worried about the weather conditions. If EG was starting this game it'd be different.

Good points Koon. I will say that EG sometimes went too far back...to the point where he couldn't get back into the pocket. It will be interesting to see how MZ responds when he actually gets very quick pressure.

You and I must have watched different games.

Last year Golson was rolling around going where his feet would take him, and one of the biggest criticisms by those who know, is that he played too shallow to the line of scrimmage. Maybe it is a case of mistaking running around to dropping back.

Versus

This year in the Texas game, Malik had all the time in the world, dropped back into the pocket and rarely felt pressure. Didn't NBC provide graphic representation about how much time Malik was getting in the pocket without being touched? And weren't his only incompletions (3) receiver drops, or one because the receiver stopped running his route?

Yeah, I'm not saying Malik's doing it wrong, he's actually doing it right. But he'd be dangerous with 6 seconds to throw and 8 yards of space between him and the nearest defender if he wanted to take off running.

I don't think the weather is going to have as much of an impact on the final score as some here do. IF scoring is limited, it will be on both ends, not just ND. If anything, this plays into ND's hands with our strong run defense. Odds are neither team will be airing it out and I trust our lines vs. UVA's 8 days a week. Overall scoring may be lower, but ND still wins convincingly.

31 - 3. I'm tempted to say we might pitch a shut out. Virginia is going to have trouble moving the ball on us.

If it rains like they are calling for watch for really safe play calling and about 12 more run plays. I still think we win by 14.

Got MZ in my draft kings lineup. I think he goes for close to 100 on the ground in these conditions.

Got ND 6, UVA 3 today for squares. Hit the 3rd Qtr last week (1 & 3), hopefully it's 16-3 at half, and 986-3 final.

They have no pass rush and we will dominate the LOS on both sides. Lots of young guys get experience again...

Offensive player of the game:
CJ Procise( couple of 40+ yd td's today)

Defensive Player of the game:
Jaylon Smith (today we see his hand in the dirt more)
