He's on campus

I know most have him as an MSU lean, but I haven't read anything explaining the Mizzou interest. Is it a bad sign that we couldn't bump them (apparently his, at best, 3rd choice based off CB predictions) out for a weekend visit?

Also, does anyone know who is hosting him on campus?

I was wondering the same thing, but I don't know. Wiltfong seems pretty optimistic about our chances provided that MSU fills up. He thinks that Cage and his dad will be really impressed with ND, as academics are important to them and proximity to home is key.

The importance of proximity to home leads me to believe that Mizzou is not really a threat ... Cage probably is just too nice to let somebody down by canceling a visit.

MSU is the clear leader though ... if they have a spot for him we are in trouble. So we have to root for at least some of Jamarco Jones, Malik McDowell, Craig Evans (if possible) and T.J. Harrell to go with Sparty.

It's currently 17 F with a 9 mph wind and clear skies at ND. 60% chance of snow tomorrow, but the high will get up to 30 F.

Could be worse. At least Cage is used to it.

Clear sky is rare this time of year. That's good news.

IDK his economic background but growing up in poverty "gated community" it was never a positive term. In fact it was an insulting or even hostile one…

Winton Woods is mostly a middle class school. There are some poorer areas, but not a lot.

And the entire country is suffering through this, so he knows it's not normal.

I like that both he and his parents have academics as a priority. I think he'll have a hard time deciding between MSU and ND.

This is what is exciting about being an ND fan under Kelly. Like Holtz, Ara, Devine before him, he has restored the importance of an ND offer. It's like getting an SC, Bama, Texas, OSU, or unfortunately scUM offer; it's still worth consideration. Blue blood status if you will.

JC Shurburtt was on Bill Kings show this morning and a caller asked about MSU recruiting. His thought was that if Malik McDowell chooses Sparty, then Cage would most likely go to ND. If McDowell chooses someone else, then he thinks Cage would go to MSU.

Fire up the "affraid of competion/early playing time" discussion.

No, it's more on MSU's end. They'd be full up on DT then most likely. Especially with them continuing to try to flip Evans from Wisconsin.

I understand your explanation. It makes sense for what was said. But why is it even a scenario if Cages parents are so locked into education?

Well, you know how it goes. Earlier in the cycle we had K.C. McDermott's dad telling reporters that Miami and ND are basically the same academically. I mean, what?

Cage and his dad had a great visit to MSU last weekend. Cage loved the school, and I'm sure MSU blew them away with their academic presentation. After all, MSU ain't ND but (like Miami) it is a pretty good school; it's pretty easy to highlight a few leading programs and dress up a few others and make it all look like a winning choice. So I'm sure the situation is that the kid loved the visit and the school set the dad's mind at ease about academics such that he is willing to support his son's choice ...

... but I'm sure he'd be happier if his son picked ND.

ISD update- visit is going good but ND has a lot of ground to make up, if McDowell ends up at MSU then we have a good shot. ND is running in second.

@SWiltfong247: The skinny on five contenders for four-star DT Daniel Cage - #Spartans #Illini #Irish #Mizzou & #Louisville (VIP) Four-Star DT Daniel Cage Nears College Decision

Anything new?

One source says that ND could blow Cage away on this visit and jump into the #1 spot, but MSU is definitely on top and Illinois may also be in front of us (Illinois has been recruiting him since the beginning and he has a great relationship with the coaches). Need a great visit and probably need Malik McDowell to pick MSU, unless the visit truly does blow him away.

I died a little inside when I read that quote.

Kelly should be able to dispel such sophistry pretty easily by using the same tactic that just impressed Quick-- simply slide a paper comparing GSR rates across the table to him. MSU's African American Football GSR (55%) and ROI are both in the bottom quintile of BCS programs. For a football player concerned about academics, they simply can't compete with ND.

I think it does come down to MSU. If the Spartans have room he will go there. If they pass, we gratefully pick him up.

Crazy that Terrence Alexander may be the best bet on the board, with Quick #2.

illinois' coaching staff will be gone after another mediocre season next year so choosing them would not be wise

Nice. I'm glad our visit is coming after MSU's. Let's hope we can make some headway.

I'm thinking Whiskey should tag along with BK on these visits.
