This quote and the Qb battle is why ND won't be great at football under kelly.

What is he going to say? I don't understand why people assume that football coaches or politicians say the same things behind closed doors as they do to the public. It has been demonstrated over and over again that is not the case.

Anyways, I feel sorry for Nevada (OK, not really). They are going to feel the brunt of a lot of frustration.

Ehhhh. Those who complain would complain no matter what. I predicted 9-3 to start the year with a loss coming from UT or MSU, Stanford or Miami, and VT or USC. Not changing that now. This team will get much better as the year goes on. But people will complain regardless. Those people complain b/c

I don't remember the second quote, but the first quote is cherry picked to make Kelly look like an asshole. Kelly was asked if, given the poor defensive showing, he still thought BVG was the right man for the job. Kelly said he absolutely did. He then went on to say something along the lines of, "The defense didn't play up to our expectations, but this is college football. Sometimes, in college football, you are just going to have to outscore the other team."

Yep. I went on a little rant about this yesterday, don't remember which thread.

But he always praises BVG and Zaire. But will always find something that Kizer did wrong and mention it to the media

At this point I think Zaire and BVG know some dirty secret on Kelly and are holding him hostage.

Kelly could simply be trying to keep Zaire's confidence up, the kid just watched Kizer lead 6 TD drives and probably can see the writing on the wall and is down on his performance. Opposite with Kizer, you have a ton of people telling him how great he is. Lots a media saying he is a 1st rounder ect ect. He might be nit picking the kid in hopes to keep him sharp and motived. The BVG thing I guess is public support for a member of your staff??

A couple of notes as we saw a decent amount of in-game personnel changes on Sunday.

It sounds like the staff is committed to trying to get Tranquill on the right track. BK singled him out in his presser as a guy that they have to work with to get him back on the field. Some communication issues and understanding of the right depth/spacing.

On the other hand, it sounds like Coleman will be taking a backseat for at least this weekend. Sounds like Julian Love will be getting that work with Crawford at the other outside CB spot.

Also, I'd be surprised if they don't use this opportunity to see a lot of Studstill, sounds like that is the gameplan. So, Sebastian at FS is probably taking a back seat as well.

If all that holds we'll have

Tranquill at SS
Studstill at FS
Luke CB
Crawford CB
Love NB

Or he might be nitpicking him because one more first down might have been the difference between a touchdown, or simply flipping the field. All of the great coaches have nitpicked their stars............. Bear, Woody, Bo, Jimmy Johnson, Bobby Bowden, Bob Davie............... all of them!

All he has to stay is i am not discussing coaching personnel decisions. However if the defense continues to play like this it won't be a fun season

Some of you want Kelly to make his displeasure very clear and/or light BVG up to the media.

You know how you DON'T generate interest from big-time coordinators? Show them that you were willing to hang the previous guy out to dry.

BK made it clear enough when he told the media, straight up, that the defensive coaching needs to be better.

Kelly is not going to call out BVG to the media like you said. Just look at the way he was talking to him and mean mugging him during the game to know how he feels.

Coming up from Texas....gotta get out of the Longhorn state. they are gushin after that game. Irish just need to look forward and get on with the biz of taking each game on at a time. Love the home opener.

he reserved that for Gary I can't turn my head around Gray

That's why he doesn't do it anymore! Put his foot right in his mouth. The defense could be worse, Gary Grey could be on it!

But in all seriousness, I can't wrap my head around why BK will not come to grips that kizer is the better quarterback and deserves all of the snaps. It just is utterly crazy. The only thing I can think is that he doesn't wa t to hurt Malik's feelings. Kizer has done nothing but show he is more than capable.

It is just so frustrating that it seems we consistently recruit great athletes that are highly ranked coming out of high school but then come and look so inadequate in this defense. I understand Kelly can't come out and throw his coordinator under the bus but I sure do hope there have been some serious talks behind closed doors. This isn't game 1 of his career at ND. This is the 3rd damn season. Hopefully he needed a little focusing and will coach this defense up and get back to business for the rest of the year.

We better curb stomp Nevada.

The thing is, if Coach Kelly came out in the media and bashes BVG. People would be on here and probably in the news how that was wrong and distasteful. "He shouldn't throw his coaches under the bus"

It appears any decision Kelly makes, it's never the correct one. I can see why Notre Dame is one of the most stressful coaching jobs.

This is one game and the first one on top of that. ND is replacing a lot of starters from last year. You had to have understood there would be a learning curve for a lot of these guys.

Let's see how the rest of the season plays out. The major test will be Mich St.

Go Irish!!!

I don't think anyone, well at least not me, wants BK to publicly shit bash BVG. But he publicly praised him. There's a lot of middle ground that would've been more understandable.

This is what my point is.

He wasn't publicly praising him. I don't know how you guys don't understand that. He was asked if BVG was the right man for the job, and BK said "Absolutely." He answered the question the only way possible. Any other answer and he starts a media shitstorm, and he's smart enough to not do that to his assistants.

BK ALSO said that the defensive coaching needs to be better, plain and simple. He made his displeasure clear. And it was also obvious throughout the game every time they showed him getting on BVG's ass.

You guys can't see the forest for the trees.

He did criticize BVG as well. In the Sunday morning teleconference, BK was asked specifically about the last 3 games and the yardage given up. His answer was, and I am paraphrasing, "Last year was last year. We look at it one week at a time. Obviously, clearly, we have to coach better.......... "

Unrelated, but here is a good link for those who wish to consume as much "official word" as they can about ND football:

UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

I don't have any affiliation with them, but und.com is a GREAT resource. They have archives of stats, schedules, rosters....... they have great box scores after each game, and they also have a ton of information about the campus and game week events for those who will be attending a game in South Bend. If any of their people are on here; THANK YOU! It's usually my "go-to" site for information about ND Football. And it's FREE!

So did BK publicly state at some point following the Texas loss, without being asked directly, that BVG is a great coach?

Sunday ripped my freakin heart out,... I'm still not right. I guess it helps in that all the stakes are now gone from my perspective and I can just sit back and watch the rest of the games without caring too much, until SC I guess,... I'm sure ND will come out strong...

This is where I'm at. More so than any other time with ND, and any other team I root for. And I was at the Big House when Forcier threw a TD to end it in 09.

I have a blow hard UT brother in law, he totally jumped on their bandwagon during the Vince Young stuff and has been all in since, worst part is he apparently grew up an Irish fan... smh... Guy is also a Broncos fan which makes it worse but he's one of those who doesn't know jack about football, never played, coached, anything.. doesn't know a cover 2 from an album cover but assumes bc his teams win that he knows football in and out... he's hard to be around as it is... Thanksgiving will not be fun this year, I'm honestly preparing myself now so I can hold back cold cocking him.

Just tell him that you're glad UT is looking good again. You know how hard it must've been to see the game in South Bend and being shut out in Ames. Luckily they've got a good coach who managed to avoid getting canned by idiots running the athletic department.

I completely understand. I live in Michigan and the majority of my friends/family are UofM fans. It was horrible when we played them. Especially when we lost.

Aren't buffet fans who mix and match teams because of tv or a single year's result the greatest?

My BIL is from NYC and is a ND, Yankees, Rangers fan (ok) but a Steelers and UK basketball fan. I refuse to talk to him about the NFL and college basketball. Pisses him off. He's reading this right now (Ultimate IE lurker) and planning my untimely death. GFY big boy!

Oh yeah. Your teams are jacked up unless you have a parent/grandparent who moved to Cali from the OH/PA stateline.

We can talk baseball I guess... even though you made the in-market infraction of bypassing the Doyers to get to the yuppy squad in the OC. In Chicago, there are geographic obligations that must be followed, or else.
