I'm certain they didn't. The NCAA rules put a serious premium on self-reporting. As soon as a violation is suspected, schools are supposed to hold the suspects out of competition and start an investigation. As long as you report it early and perform a real investigation, sanctions are extremely unlikely to be imposed. SOP for dealing with the NCAA.
Unfortunately, it looks like someone within the NCAA leaked the story soon after ND self-reported, which is what necessitated that embarrassing press conference. I wouldn't read too much into what was essentially forced damage control on ND's part.
You keep hammering on that one line. If that alone sparked this entire witch hunt, then yes, that would be absurd. But I very much doubt that was the case. DD allegedly emailed a paper to a professor which included a conversation with someone who helped him edit the paper. The prof read the convo and thought it indicated academic fraud. That prof then forwarded his evidence onto the administration, who began an investigation. As LAX mentioned on a previous page, that investigation likely uncovered a lot of other stuff.
You're right that none of this would make sense if it was all one big misunderstanding about a single innocuous phrase in a DD email. But that's not a very reasonable assumption to make.
ND shoots the horse first then goes and checks to see if its foot is broken. This whole vacating wins thing puzzles me. Why would you vacate wins when it is apparent you didn't know about the alleged issues beforehand?
Most look at vacating wins as "so what?" We all know who won the games. But still, it's out there and it means something. If the Admin threw that out there as an attempt to "save face", then I got a problem with that. That goes against the core of standing up for the student until which time the facts show they did something unethical.
In the end, it may all come out in the wash. And without knowing all the facts yet, maybe I am speaking out of turn. But if I were a student-athlete at ND, I would sure be asking the question of whether or not I am guilty before I am proven innocent. Nothing wrong with the school wanting to protect themselves in the event that things were done improperly, but up till now I just get the feeling the school is caring a little more about themselves than the athletes that are representing the school. I know it may be unfair to think that... but I think that none the less. I am done with my little rant.

Maybe I'm off but who would forward to the NCAA a claim that says we think this guy is cheating and here is our evidence...
You see when he says "I need help with this paper" he really means "Write my paper"
It just doesnt make sense.
First off, unless the info is from a 'she' I don't believe it
I would think DD having previous marks would be one to be gone.
I would think KM would be one to 'hold out' as he wasn't in line to start anyway.
I am going to speculate that Whiskey's clairvoyant vision is about 90% accurate. Notre Dame 1). takes its time about all these things [and sometimes has "extra" steps in the line of procedure which slow things even more], and 2). don't give a damm about internet commenters need for instant news. In probably every case of a world-coming-to-an-end rumor [which ESPN happily jumped on to smear us], Notre Dame has gone slow and honestly and thoroughly and the end result has been eminently reasonable/understandable.
The "awkwardness" in this is not "our" feelings [the season will not depend upon our pre-season feelings nor at any time] but that the conservative procedures that we use cause Coach to not have several players at practice who he normally would [I am going to bet that each one has a training routine "suggestion" as to how to bide their time.]
Now to add my own stupidity/ignorance to everyone else's: I'm betting that Russell, Williams, and Moore will all be in school this fall, and they will play if their gradepoint average is good enough [class flunk or not.] The same will be true of Daniels unless he's a two-strikes-and-you're-out situation.
With that, I can't wait until Rice rolls in to town, and Cole Luke, Isaac Rochell, and Brown/Brent/Robinson/Fuller go out and kick a few Owls in the tail feathers. Then, they'll do it again to a retreating Wolverine.
I've been hesitant to post this since the latest "rumored" news has been positive but I am posting to see if anyone else close to the program has heard this and can maybe confirm or deny...
Last week my nephew's roommate said his father in on the investigation committe and that this goes back through former players and is pretty deep. I passed it off as a student trying to act like he has an "in" to make himself appear important (kid just strikes me that way).
Today, an alum and former professor said that at least 20 current and former football players are involved in sex for papers. This source is much more credible.
Not sure where to go from here but hoping some IE posters with inside contacts can verify or disprove these comments.

Sounds like a rehash of the same rumor making the rounds last week that has since been apparently discredited.
Hope your right. Not sure where the former prof got his info but I'm just sharing with what he told me.
Not saying you're wrong, but that was a rumor circulating last week that seemingly has lost steam. I may be mistaken and others here can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Jack Swarbrick stated last week that no other players were involved.
I'm failing to see why a woman would be demanding sex for papers. I understand that they enjoy it too but it sounds really far-fetched. The reverse scenario is more believable
