Pokemon Go

1. You find an area with Pokemon based on a distance marker on your phone, which displays a map of the surrounding area to follow (a legit map, from Google Maps, with a Pokemon skin layered over it).

2. When the marker reaches "0" your phone will buzz and a Pokemon appears on your phone screen.

3. Click on the Pokemon and raise your phone. It activates your camera, and displays the Pokemon over top of the real-world view that your phone displays.

4. It's literally just super-imposing a Pokemon over what your camera displays, aka Augmented Reality (AR).

5. You can turn off the AR feature, which is useful in most cases, but sometimes you just want to show off your Pokemon in the real world, dammit.

6. Get the girl, who is undoubtedly attracted to your Dratini.

7. ???

8. Profit.

So you try to find pokeman, and you essentially use a map to get a 'you're getting hotter/colder' reading. You find it, then your phone will actually display the pokeman to the world (no clue how that's possible, I need to rewatch B2TF movies). And then you 'collect' that pokeman I assume?

So me being a stranger with ish to do, could actually see a pokeman on the streets if someone happened to find one when I was in the area.

I think you're messing with me now.

The phone shows the pokemon on your screen, on your camera.

Turn your phone camera on, and now pretend that there's a pokemon on your phone scree. That's what you see to play the game and catch the Pokemon.

It allows you to take screen grabs of the game, which is what I posted. That cartoon wasn't actually projected over the sidewalk lol.

So I've got a question about gym battles... I don't think I can possibly be doing them right. I went to a local gym today and battled... I beat the first Pokemon, then it immediately put up against the next one and my guy got KO'd. Because... duh... I can't beat two strong pokemon back to back. Is there any way to "sub" pokemon like in the original game? Or run multiple so that when one dies the other goes? Or is it just going to literally be impossible for me to ever make progress?

I overtook a gym yesterday for the first time. Basically you select 6 Pokémon to battle against however many are in the gym. The gym I battled had 2. So after I beat the gym the first time one of the Pokémon in the gym went away. I revived all my knocked out Pokémon and used potions to replenish their health. Then I attacked again. This time there was only one Pokémon to beat. I did that and the gym was neutral. I placed my own Pokémon in there (which was subsequently beat 5 minutes later).

Without playing or seeing it, I do wonder... can't this cause problems if a Pokemon someone is obsessed with is in someone's marked property or in a house or restricted building... I'm sure this game doesn't have it down so cold that this never happens...

Isn't it a matter of time before something like that leads to a hostile or dangerous interaction or sorts???

From what I've read, the game was developed based on another game that uses the same real-world-map-and-gps concept.

It's developed to avoid major highways and areas that are restricted to pedestrians. But of course, people also need to use common sense. Just because there aren't any Pokemon along/close-to I-80, doesn't mean some jackass isn't going to walk across a barrier and try to hunt on the highway anyway.

There shouldn't really be a reason to walk through someone's yard, either, as it's not a specific EXACT spot that you're looking for, it's just a general radius. Once you hit that general area, you can click on the Pokemon on your screen to catch it.

I was on my sidewalk the other day when my phone buzzed and a Pokemon displayed on the map. It showed as in my neighbor's backyard, but I didn't need to actually go back there. You just click on it once it pops up.

Well that's what I've been seeing on fbook and twitter so now I'm confused. If it doesn't show up in real life (which is crazy to think about), as a non pokeman fan, this isn't interesting to me.

Slam piece is telling me this has already caused accidents on the road (nothing new - phones causing accidents). But this seems to take this to a whole new level of danger from what little I understand.

For those that want to skip the last few posts, Koon actually thought Nintendo made an app that makes fictional creatures appear in real life.

I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe it recognizes private properties that are gated off and such... like my area of Cali, it's not too difficult to find properties that are numerous acres all gated and secured... what if one highly sought after Pokemon was housed right in the middle of that??

Also, just thinking,... do people see the same 'pings' or are they exclusive to each person?? If everyone sees the same stuff can't people fight over things if they arrive at the scene the same time? If not, isn't that a bit questionable in terms of fairness, is this a pay for game in any regard??

Just wondering, not trying to cause trouble, legit curiosity...

I literally have no idea how this works and youtube is blocked at work so I'm just a racing mind right now. I am seeing some weird ISH online and am thoroughly confused.

I thought that was pretty

My neighbors have a large piece of land behind their house that is private property. It's not represented on the map, nor were there any "pings" when I was back there swimming the other day. I think the "pings" and the occurrences of Pokemon popping up are programmed to relate to normal suburban/urban areas where pedestrian foot traffic is accessible (the game is owned/developed with Google Maps, so they know where the public can access), and to large public places like parks, reserves and universities.

Also, just thinking,... do people see the same 'pings' or are they exclusive to each person?? If everyone sees the same stuff can't people fight over things if they arrive at the scene the same time?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think everyone sees the same Pokemon on their map when they are hunting in the same area. The pokemon will pop up on your phone if you reach the proper radius, allowing you the chance to click on it and catch it, and disappear for other users (temporarily, they usually show up in the same general places when the map data refreshes). So it's not really possible to fight over "who gets it," when it will appear on someone's individual device, and when the location is an precise spot. It's also likely that multiple people will each get the Pokemon to pop up on their device and have a chance to catch it, as long as they are in the same general area at the same time.

If not, isn't that a bit questionable in terms of fairness, is this a pay for game in any regard??

It's basically a "race" to the spot, but with low stakes. You'll see an outline of all the Pokemon in a particular area, along with a marker of how far they are. You pick a direction and hope the markers start disappearing. If someone else gets to the right general radius first, the Pokemon disappears. But like I said above, the data refreshes, and there doesn't seem to be a limited number of each Pokemon. You just gotta wait for another chance.

You do pay, but it's microtransactions for items to catch/lure/fight Pokemon. You don't really need them, either, as long as you can hit a Pokestop a few times a day.

I believe its based on cell phone activity. So yeah it's unlikely that lots of pokemon will be spawning in the middle of empty fields.

I know most pokemon are available to anyone that's in the vicinity. Me and my wife ran some errands the other night and i was duel wielding cell phones in the passenger seat. Every time a pokemon appeared it showed up on both phones.

The only exception there might be would be random encounters. For example when i missed out on my Snorlax, it didn't appear on my map before it popped up in front of me. I could have not noticed it, but it sure seemed like it came out of nowhere. I wonder if maybe those "random" encounters are player specific?

Well that's good to know then. I was under the impression that certain Pokemon were limited for certain amounts of time. I am constantly seeing Squirtles and Bulbasaurs outlined as being in the area, but they disappear quickly. I always thought it was because they were desirable and thus being captured quickly, but perhaps it's because they are at the very edge of that "three leaf" radius, and are cycled out in favor of closer, more common Pokemon as the GPS updates.

I don't give a shit about the game, but can one of you dudes let me know if I should be expecting the same weirdo group of overweight adolescence to continue walking around in front of my house being creepy every night?

Or did they find their little animal or ghey ball and now I'm good?

Once they stop it will be another group, then another, then another. Hopefully by then you have amassed enough information on wooden spoons that you have carefully selected the best one for waging war and protecting ur property! Good luck sir, make your family proud.

It's gonna happen more and more frequently. Eventually, the close proximity will result in your conversion, and you will be one of us.

Just another mindless Woolybug, on the hunt for a Mewtwo, or perhaps a Dragonite.

Idk, you do kinda seem like a Mr. Mime guy. Maybe on the hunt for a Mr. Mime.

I second what wooly said.

Amazing the spectrum of conversation the board can have. Ie: going from political, ethical and scotch/whiskey/whisky conversations to Pokemon.

Confide in them how much you post on internet message boards and how you have a life long battle against a man only known as "Koonja." You will find common ground and befriend them quickly.
