I'm still trying to figure out what happened.

Lol.

Terrell Suggs?

There used to be a poster on IE named JohnnyKillz, R.I.P., damn he was sharp. He got stuff the first time. Didn't need spoon fed explanations. You're a blonde, aren't you?

Are you sure that video isn't from 2012?

Sure looks as devastating as 2012!

WAKE UP THE ECHOES!

And Kelly made the key point. Not to make excuses, but most of the teams we played this year have been releasing the ball after about a second. I think it is because of the scary, scary pass rush from last year.

Good news, we may not have many teams on the schedule that can get the ball out that quickly, effectively. I am hopping not.

USC may try to get the ball out quickly to protect Kessler or whatever QB they trot out there. Plus, with so few healthy receivers right now they may wanna hit some safe, short passes on the perimeter to keep the WRs away from LB and Safety hits.

As far as other teams, they may try to employ quick passes, but they're probably won't be as effective at it, especially a team like Navy that doesn't pass much as it is. Of course, the Option is a whole 'nother beast anyway.

OFD's Larz just published a film breakdown of our DL play against ASU:

I'm not suggesting that dropping defensive linemen into coverage was the only reason the Irish had success against a very good Arizona State offense. There is no question, the linebackers broke on the ball well, the secondary did a better job of taking away the inside in man coverage and the defense as a whole tackled very well. Even so, dropping linemen into coverage was an exceptional adjustment by coach Diaco and his staff that clearly had an impact on the game. Having Williams and Okwara patrolling the shallow middle helped prevent Taylor Kelly from scrambling out of the pocket and making plays with his feet. An added bonus was this adjustment meant that Tuitt and Shembo were left one on one with ASU's tackles. As well, dropping linemen from time to time played a key role in limiting one of Arizona State's most effective plays, the shallow crosser. This forced Taylor Kelly to look down field, which meant he had to hold onto the ball for longer, which allowed the Irish pass rush time to get to him. Finally, this adjustment helped the Irish maximize the unique physical talents of players like Romeo Okwara and Ishaq Williams. There are very few defenders in the country who can play defensive tackle in a 40 front, rush the passer, spy an athletic quarterback and drop into coverage. A tip of the cap to the Irish coaching staff for this adjustment, this is what schematic advantage should look like.

What does he think about dropping Ishaq 20+ yards down the field in coverage on 3rd & 20? I'd call that not a schematic advantage.

Eliminates predictability. If the staff believes, as the article suggests, Ishaq can play the run, rush the passer and cover it leaves the quarterback guessing on his pre-snap read.

I agree, it's probably not his strong suit, but he he has looked much quicker this year. I just think he's more confident. The confidence creates less hesitation and he's getting to the ball quicker.

If Spond is still on the roster, I don't think we're having this discussion.

That clearly didn't work well, though that was the only instance I can recall where Ishaq was asked to cover deep. Seems like he did a great job spying Kelly and covering crossing routes.

Additionally I'd say it depends on what the coverage is. I personally have no problem whatsoever giving Ishaq responsibility for underneath throws in a zone package or something like that. As long as he's not matched up 1-on-1 trying to cover a receiver like a CB, or responsible for a huge area of space, I think he can get the job done.

It didn't really bother me.

Didn't Ishaq have an interception in the spring game?

Not against the most athletic running back on the team Buster!

When ASU is working for that in matchup heaven, we need to have a DB in there, just like if they start running down hill we need to have the mooses back in. Meece?

Seeing as our CBs, Safeties, and LBs have been beaten on 3rd & 20 what did he have to lose?

Even Tom Hammond could grasp what ND had been doing wasn't working. Diaco made an adjustment and as Larz pointed out, it worked. Irish19 noted it "eliminates predictability". It enters one more variable that the OC must prepare for and the QB must read and process on each play. I don't think it was coincidence that sacks soared in that game.

It was an advantage. Next week a prepared team with better receiving talent might capitalize against that same tactic. It's chess with 300 pound pawns and 4.4 knights.

Don't recall.

One of Saturdays highlights was a DL dropping into pass coverage and the QB didn't "see" him as he wasn't expected to anywhere near the target area. It was a Pick 6 against a smart QB.

If you guys think on 3rd + 20 a DL should be dropping in coverage like a DB you're insane. Zone blitzes and dropping guys off the line to cover short/intermediate routes is one thing. That's a very shrewd move if your guys can execute.

Lining up Ishaq Williams at ILB off the line of scrimmage and then dropping him straight back in zone coverage is a completely different animal. There is no scenario on the 3rd + 20 where it makes sense to put Ishaq on the field as an ILB and have him cover like a DB. All I'm saying is that for the props Diaco is getting for his cuteness working, he's tried other cute things throughout the season that have gotten us burned. Most notably in the Michigan game, but even in the ASU game there were some serious schematic blunders at big moments.

It was an advantage. Next week a prepared team with better receiving talent might capitalize against that same tactic. It's chess with 300 pound pawns and 4.4 knights.
This (^^^) coupled with having Okwara all over the line (tall long-armed body) and Jaylon shutting down the edge probably helped keep the short quick passes to a minimum against ASU and took away a lot of what they wanted to do while protecting the linbackers. For some reason, I did not see much of the back shoulder throws as I was expecting either. Overall, the gameplan was good and the guys executed it.

What are the other options?

Spond is gone. Grace was already injured. Carlo and Fox are shorter, slower, and IMO, greater liabilities. Prince was busy killing their QB. Jaylon and Councell are really the only other options, and I believe Jaylon was already on the field at another position.

This. I'd rather see Jalen Brown or Hardy or Redfield out there on 3rd and long.

I cringe whenever its 3rd and 5+ and Carlo and Fox are both out there. We have to have better options. Again, I'd take any backup in the secondary covering a RB or a TE or dropping in zone than our middle LBs (or freakin Ishaq!).

Have Collinsworth and Farley at safety and put Shummate in the middle. If Diaco doesn't want to do that for whatever reason and he insists Ishaq/Carlo/Fox be in there, have them blitz up the middle, where they can actually provide value. Putting them in coverage rarely (ever?) works out.

That's an option but to my understanding, Shumate is having trouble with the "mental" part of the game. Maybe the coaches aren't confident he can play another position effectively when he hasn't fully grasped the safety position.
