Are they going to have to go back to small town high school ball, like players playing both offense and defense? Seriously, this sucks, but what do you do? I almost feel like this year shouldn't count against the eligibility rules. Disregard it, and give everyone an extra year of eligibility. Is that too crazy?

This year is not counting is my understanding, so no i don't think you are crazy

That decision was made at least a month ago.

I still wish the tested daily, so players can be quarantined or isolated asap.

State of Iowa is doing away with 14 day quarantines due to contact tracing in school if all kids are wearing masks. Maybe this is the start of some more leniency.

The fact that FSU hasn't already been cancelled means they think they can get a bulk of the players back by next Tuesday which is realistically the latest they can start practicing and still be "ready" to play the game. None of this is ideal, it's unlikely the team will have their full roster or be in peak game shape. And I would imagine any new positives in the coming days is likely to be a deal breaker if it triggers more contact tracing.

Also, USF has yet to report a single positive test before or after the game, and is scheduled to start conference play this weekend. Really blows a hole in the idea that the games themselves are high risk events for transmission.

Shaun Crawford 7th year confirmed.

That would be nice if he can stay healthy.

You have to think the transfer portal will be busy in the off season though with all the additional eligibility. All the guys thinking next season is going to be their season. Nope, the SRs are coming back again, and you also have more studs coming in to compete.

And with Book eligible again, I can't see both Pyne and Clark staying with Buchner coming in.

What I don't get is of the Power 5 schools how is Notre Dame and Va Tech the only schools that seem to be having large outbreaks with football players? Are all the other schools keeping their "student athletes" in a bubble/isolation via remote classes, training table, etc?

They do have separate dorms for athletes at most other schools, so that could be part of it.

I think a number of schools had it run through the locker rooms this summer too.

People already hit on this, but schools basically did one of two things or a combination of both:
1. Isolated their players entirely. Online classes, athlete dorms, etc. Some schools even sent their general student populous home.

2. Had a large portion of their team get it before the season started so they aren't at risk for infection or transmission.

Notre Dame is/was really trying to thread the needle with in person classes + students on campus + no one getting infected before the season + communal living off and on campus.

There's no way. He was thinking about testing the NFL waters after LAST season. I can't see him staying a 6th year.

(Unless BK convinces him to stay for a holdover year where they have a plan to sprinkle Buchner in throughout the '21 season before taking the job fully in 2022.)

good question, maybe the other schools are having the same problem but it's not being reported or maybe other teams are fudging the numbers to get them on the field. I forget what CF game I watched last Saturday but the cameras showed a starter standing on the sidelines not dressed for the game and the announcers said he was not playing because of contact tracing. I don't understand why this player was even allowed to be in the stadium during the game.

Lax you seem to be pretty on top of this whole thing and I definitely respect your opinion. What are the odds of us playing next weekend?

I was told last Monday when this shit started that it would take a "minor miracle" to play the FSU game. The fact that the FSU game has yet to be officially cancelled or moved is encouraging. It suggests that if there are no additional positives this week then ND can resume practice early/middle next week with enough bodies to play the game. The constricting factor has always been the 14 day contact tracing provision... the fact that they shut everything down last Tuesday was smart.

As far as info coming from campus, ND has a lot of leaks. Most of the info is coming direct from players/parents who talk to people on the beat regularly. Every name that has been shared early has been correct, but that doesn't mean that their perceptions of how things will play out will always be right. There was some denialism on the testing results immediately following USF, mainly because people were asymptomatic.

Great summary.

I really expected ND to at least bring the kids in to a centralized living environment, and kinda wished while doing that, they beamed in the classes on vid.

Any news on the latest cause, or is it possibly just continued spread from the earlier off campus party jumping to more players?

Appreciate the info. Let’s hope it gets played.

Do we know when the next round of testing is?

What is the determining factor for a game being cancelled? Didn't Va Tech play last week with like 20 guys out due to Covid? Sucks for the school, but why is it the other teams fault your starting QB or whoever cannot play.

Trying to determine if we play on 10/10 is futile until we get the results of this weeks testing. It looks like they release that info on Mondays so on 10/5 we'll know. The guys who were held out for USF should all have met the 10 or 14 day test by 10/10. Of course, if they can't practice next week they will probably be held out.

My math (?) shows 22 new players (plus 7 that went from quarantine to isolated) in the Sept 22-27 testing window. Depending on which day the hit the list, whether they are q. or iso., and if the test positive again they may be good to go by 10/6 or not.

So there's alot of guesswork but we might be looking at 10-20 out. Or way more if the positive tests continue.

ACC has no strict quidelines. Seems like you can cancel if you want to but I'm sure the league will get involved if somebody protests a decision that doesn't have a strong set of data behind it.

va tech probably had good tracing to the point where they felt it was contained and safe to play. we clearly didnt (and still might not) have that.

It's purely a judgment call. If you have enough cleared people to play the game then you are expected to play. I don't think we will see a situation where somebody tries to cancel and the other school protests, but it's hypothetically possible.
