It's like a championship belt. Clemson won it from Bama in the NCG last year, then lost it in October to Syracuse, who immediately dropped it to Miami.

How is it won?? Just by beating the defending champ??

So when we beat Michigan in 99 or whenever that was when they were defending champs did it not count because we also had to beat Nebraska?? Also, it says we have no successful defenses... we won like ten games to start the 89 title defense.

National "titles' have nothing to do with it. It's just whomever beat the last team that had the belt.

That's not how this works:

College Football Belt Champions Lineage

The Belt started with Nebraska's 1971 championship and has been defended every week since then.

My friends & I were sitting watching football; talking about what a farce Division 1-A college football is without a national championship tournament. Every year, just like millions of others, we gathered together to watch March Madness when a National Champion is crowned in college basketball & we lamented that this doesn’t happen in major college football. Sometime during the 1980’s, most likely 1983 when Miami jumped four spots in the polls over Auburn to claim a National Championship or 1984 when Brigham Young was named National Champions after they had defeated a Michigan team that finished 6-6, we decided to create our own championship. Our logic was simple; we watch as much college football as anyone else so why can’t we name a champion? We wanted the championship to have some history but we had to work within the scheduled games available since we could not create a match-up. The big thing was we wanted the title to be decided on the field like a fight is decided in the ring; this is how The Belt was born.

The concept was easy, no one could claim The Belt without defeating the current title-holder on the field. But where do we start? Who would be the first Belt holder? Some wanted to go back to the first college football games between Princeton & Rutgers while others felt we should start with the 1936 Minnesota Golden Gophers since they were the first team to be named National Champions by the Associated Press. The decision was finally made to give the first Belt to the best college football team within our lifetime. Most of us were born in the early 1960’s so there was really only one choice -- the 1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Update

On January 1, 1972, after a 38-6 victory in the Orange Bowl over Alabama, Nebraska was awarded The Belt. The Cornhuskers stood with a 32-game winning streak & universal acclaim as “Greatest Team Ever”. Since that game, each champion has defended The Belt every time they take the field. The Belt is held with a win or tie while The Belt is claimed by the new champion only when the current title-holder is defeated on the field of play. This is The College Football Belt Championship.

The Belt has traveled through many conferences, with both good teams & bad teams but one thing has remained constant -- it is always decided on the field. Each Belt-holder can trace their lineage back to the Cornhuskers team that dominated college football for 3 straight years. Each title-holder is a descendent of that great team & should look with pride on the fact they are a part of history. From the 1973 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, through the 1986 Penn State Nittany Lions, to the 1996 Brigham Young Cougars, each team that has held The Belt is a part of the bloodline of the college football champion. Even the 1985 Oregon State Beavers & the 1996 Tulsa Golden Hurricane have held a piece of this history. Whether they reigned for one week, like the Rice Owls in 1991, or 31 weeks like the 2000-2002 Miami Hurricanes these teams are the descendents of one of the best college football team in the land.

College Football Belt - Belt Description

Someone did some research with different starting points for the belt, and by the current year, they all ended up with the same team thanks to some of those long winning streaks. So no matter where you want to start the belt, the current belt is the consensus belt.

They lamented some lack of a champion and THAT's what they came up with? Frankly,... it's stupid.

This is the best thing I've never heard of. They need to manufacture a physical belt and give it to whomever owns it. How sick would it be for the captain or coach to walk down the tunnel with the belt on and at the end of the game if the other teams wins they get to take the belt?

It doesn't start anew each season with the national champ. It goes back to the beginning of games, and the winner keeps the belt until they are beaten. At that point, that person has the belt until they lose, just like in boxing.

the last time we played for the belt was the bush push game.

Also, if ND wins, then they claim all of Miami's land in r/CFB's Imperialism game. That'd catapult the Irish to around 4th or so in total land by square miles

No. It is not. It is awesome. Like Lax said, this is the greatest thing I've never heard of in college football. (Also I love how old-school the website is. Also, USC had to vacate The Belt in the Reggie Bush years!). How is this not a thing we all knew about?

Also, Notre Dame has only held The Belt for seven games, way back in 1973. We won and then lost it immediately in 1991. Let's get that shit back.

Rewatching Miami vs tech. we don't give up the deep ball and we're fine.

Their DL will get to us in pass rush, but if Wimbush can stay healthy and make quick reads, well win.

This "war" started with Jimmy Johnson pouring it on with the classlessness.

Any Miami fans whining about disrespect, you revolutionized it.

Stop crying about a T-shirt that was just that, a T-shirt.

This isn't the 80s. We don't think you're convicts.

That shit talk is just that, shit talk.

We are a diverse fanbase.

We aren't choir boys.

We only want one thing:

to kick your ass on Saturday.

Let me view this belt doohickey from your vantage point:

ND beats Miami and loses to Stanford. Stanford loses the Jiffy Lube Oil Change Bowl in a rematch with San Diego St. while UGA beats Bama in Quadruple OT. SDSU goes undefeated next year, is left out of the CFP as 12-0 ND beats 13-0 Bama 69-0. SDSU beats undefeated Iowa who is also left out of the CFP after beating 10-3 OSU in the B!G Championship Game. SDSU remains undefeated until Game 3 of the '19 season when they are upset by the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona. NAU finishes the year undefeated at the FCS level while ND wins it's second National Championship in a row with a 72-0 victory over previously undefeated OSU. ND is back to back National Champions with crushing victories over both Evil Empires and this really cool belt is stuck in Flagstaff, AZ.

Yep... pretty dumb.
