Things I like a lot in those interviews:

(1) Sanford talks a lot about running the ball.
(2) BK implying that they're focusing on getting more takeaways from the DBs
(3) Denson dropping Lou Holtz-isms on Folston and Bryant

was it just me, or did BK sound very pleased that the other coaches left? He noted numerous times that their leavings, allowed him to put this staff together

I think he did a great job with putting this staff together but how else is supposed to sound? Obviously he's going to put a positive spin on this and rightfully so these were good hires but I didn't expect anything different.

he did which i think we upgraded in a few areas, brought some new energy in and also a shakeup is sometimes needed...i thought there were a couple of shots fired when he said something along the lines of "these guys don't care what title is next to their name, the only title is a national championship"...was this towards alford who stated he NEEDED more titles on his resume? idk certainly worded it that way.....the other thing mentioning that they were lateral moves and not $ based etc...

Every ND fan has his/her opinion of BK and the job he is doing and they tend to differ substantially. One thing I think we can all agree with is that BK has had a few moments of verbal diarrhea, where his wording and tone give a certain impression (whether he wants us to have that impression or not). This would be one of those moments. I have no idea how he feels about Cooks or Alford, but to the uninformed masses, both did a good job and did their best at portraying the ND brand (Alford especially). To say something like he did today, poorly worded / summarized or whatever, was unfounded. He would have been better served to say it wasn't financial and leave it at that. He sounded like a jaded ex-lover.

I don't believe he sounded jaded or had verbal diarrhea in the least. It wasn't about those he left, it was about those who are now on board.

Kelly mentioned that there were three imminent hires still to be cleared by HR: analysts for offense, defense, and special teams. He stated that each of these three analysts were veteran coaches. I assume the offensive analyst is Jeff Quinn. Any notions on who the other two may be?

With spring practice still a couple weeks out, I was surprised to see Coach Autry working with the RBs on cone drills during the WatchND video. How much participation can the coaching staff have during off season workouts?

Only a short time ago, this board was having a meltdown with the departure of Alford and Cooks. Now we have the greatest staff in the world! Oh the emotional roller coaster.

these guys don't care what title is next to their name

Maybe it's only me, but I take that as a pot shot to Cooks and Alford. There is no need for that, especially when factoring in who he is talking about.

It could very well be as you described, but I honestly thought he was referring to current members of the staff that we're having to move around to appease some of the new hires. Most importantly Denbrock. Now it makes me wonder if he was taking a shot at those that moved on. Either way, I am absolutely thrilled with the new hires, and anxious to see how far they canift the program.

Absolutely love this staff. Can't wait to see what Todd Lyght does with the Db's.
When Coach Kelly discusses the role of analysts it sounds like college football has moved into a sort of Bill James saber metrics. The attention to detail has ratcheted up even more.

Yeah, I have gone back and listened to it a few times and I think like the bolded.

It may have been a shot at the other guys, but to me he seemed to be really praising the current staff's mindset.

Add me to the list that thinks yankeeND is right. Coach Kelly was praising Coach Denbrock, not taking a shot at Coach Alford/Cooks

Pretty disappointed in how Kelly and denbrock are basically running the O still. Why did the Sanford dude even take job, not even guaranteed to be play caller.

Brad Stevens is into the stats & metrics big time. He credits a lot of his early success to this. I think what you're seeing is BK growing himself.

I third the motion.

In the context of what he was saying, he was talking about the responsibilities split between Denbrock and Sanford. Using those context clues, it appears that BK is referencing people on the outside making a bigger deal about job titles than the guys on the inside.

I watched the interview a second time.

I think he was praising all staff members, present and past.

I think he was trying to distinguish this staff's difference on a whole other level. To me, this means that all his coaches were great coaches. He is trying to make 'teamwork' and 'desire' the difference with this iteration of the staff.

And he is right.

The only shot he took was to the a$$wipes that act like they know what they are talking about when they manifest their negativism in clichés based on truisms of the past. A lot of people are still beating their chest and crying about low pay for ND coaches.

The reason that you all should realize this wasn't a cut to anyone at ND or who had left, even recently, is that all these comments centered around BK's main press conference theme of how much Jack Swarbrick had done, and how many tools he had made available for this process.

When I saw Jack at the ND luncheon before the UM game in '12 all I said was, "Thank you!" He waited for more, including the expected advice, and I finally said. "You are [singlehandedly] making this program great again." (His selection process for Kelly, etc.) He is so much smarter than any of us, any other words were a waste of time.

And by the way, the assistant coach selection process this time smacks of Swarbrick. I think the other thing you saw from Kelly and his body language was just that!

Pretty disappointed in how Kelly and denbrock are basically running the O still. Why did the Sanford dude even take job, not even guaranteed to be play caller.

I don't think anything was evidenced in any statement that decisions like that are more than our own early assumptions.

Seems to me (granted these are my assumptions) that Kelly is :

Turning his day to day offensive duties over to others (which he stated), including coaching quarterbacks.

Putting a young genius, best in the business in charge of run and pass coordination and integration (which he also stated), with that young guy having an emphasis on rejuvinating the running game.

Putting all the experience in its best position to help the program; Denbrock to oversee the offense, and Sanford for that matter; Elliot to over see him, (Kelly) which is a brilliant move; and an experience "coach consultant for every phase of the game.

In addition Lyght and Denson, have showed on little bits of film striking abilities with their position coaching. When you see guys like Folston, Farley, Bryant, and Redfield, shaking their heads (positively) and the "light bulb going off," already, you have to feel good.

Finally bringing Powlus in for the players, as well as the other guys whose names are being thrown around, really bodes well.

Others have seen a stronger attempt to get recruiting prospects on campus, earlier. All these guys can make a difference on campus. What a boost for recruiting on a big weekend or with a big event, having twice the staff involved!

I found it interesting that when Denbrock moved to OC, the positive spin was that they are on the same page all the time and no difference in opinions.

Then with the hire of Sanford, he praises how he turns the room upside down.

However, I fall in the camp that someone in the room to challenge everything is always good. Can be frustrating, but good for ideas and strategy thinking.

...so long as the utlimate decision maker is in the room, and when the decision is made, once everyone leaves the room, no "chatter", no bullshit. Implement to the best of your ability.

What I find is that the nay sayer rarely operates that way and either becomes a pariah outside the room, or recruits others and destroys cohesion...select your nay sayers carefully, and reward the hell out of them for doing the job the right way....and make damned sure others respect the role and drop thor's hammer on those who carry an attitude toward the nay sayer outside the "room".

A freebie from BGI on the Sanford hire:

https://notredame.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1742839

Sanford:
"It was going to be a hard decision no matter what," Sanford said. I love Boise, Idaho. I love Boise State University and those kids, the staff. We were not going anywhere. I mean that. We were done. When Signing Day happened, my wife and I said, 'Let's commit to being here and we're going.' This Notre Dame thing came out of nowhere."

"When I first heard about it, I had a different reaction because it's Notre Dame. I think knowing that this place stands for something I want to be a part of: elite academics, the chance to explore from a spiritual standpoint, which is very important to me in my life and also, this is the mecca of college football. I really was excited quite frankly when the Notre Dame opportunity came about. I was fired up. There was something inside of me that felt different than any other job that had been out there in this offseason."
