jeff burris coming back as an analyst-scout
If all goes to plan, Notre Dame’s next defensive analyst will be former consensus All-American and first-round pick Jeff Burris, who nearly joined the staff last year.
Notre Dame’s next staff addition could be an All-American hire.
Irish Illustrated has learned that Brian Kelly has targeted former Irish safety Jeff Burris for the defensive analyst’s role. Burris has already interviewed for the position and could be officially hired in the coming weeks with spring practice set to kick off on March 16.
The former consensus All-American and first-round pick has spent the past three seasons as a defensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins but was not retained when the staff turned over this off-season.
Burris interviewed for the defensive backs coaching position that went to Todd Lyght last off-season and had similar experience to Kelly’s pick for that post. Burris spent 2012 on former Irish offensive coordinator Charley Molnar’s staff at UMass before moving to the Dolphins. Those positions represent the former Irish safety’s only coaching experience at the college or NFL levels.
Burris did spend time on staff at Warren Central during former Irish defensive tackle Sheldon Day’s high school career. Lyght also started in the prep ranks at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.
In addition to being a consensus All-American during the 1993 season, Burris was a tri-captain of that team and named its MVP. That squad, which finished 11-1 and nearly played for a national title, also included first-round picks Bryant Young and Aaron Taylor.
The 27th pick in the first round of the 1994 NFL Draft, Burris went on to have a 10-year NFL career that started in Buffalo and made stops in Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
Burris would complete Notre Dame’s analyst team that also includes Jeff Quinn (offense) and Marty Biagi (special teams).
